A fantastic and overwhelming dramatic piece. Just heard it in another really great performance with Sebastiaan Kemner en the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands under the baton of the famous Dutch conductor Antony Hermus in Amsterdam last Saturday. They will play it again in the Konzerthaus in Berlin tomorrow evening! Not to be missed and highly recommended!
A major addition to the very small list of important Trombone concerti. The ending, in particular, is unexpected and ingenious, as well as the logical and moving conclusion.
I first heard of Christopher Rouse when I bought his Symphony #1. I've never heard this piece until now. Very somber and mysterious beginning, good trombone tone and the use of the strings is masterful! Builds tension perfectly! I will be adding this composition to my list. Love it!!!
The idea of balancing the contrasts of trombome timbre with strings & silences is magisterial in beginning 12 minutes . The suspense too and light orchestrations are wonderful in the faster succeeding part !Fantastic judgement I would never have expected a trom concerto like this! I am hungry for more Druckmann however !
Just heard Rouse's Organ Concerto performed by Paul Jacobs with the LA Phil led by David Robertson. Had never heard any of Rouse's music before. I'm still reeling. They seriously need to record that piece. How did this guy go under my radar?
After being introduced to Jacob Druckman I cant imagine anyone with this sensitivity to detail: Rouse I've known for a while but need to hear him again. The unfolding here is fine stuff indeed! this is so expertly played . I cant wait to hear the Flute concerto! So somber as is the ending. Is it the same music at the end?
I've been hired to accompany the 2nd movt for a trombonist here, and I'm finding the piano reduction of this orchestra part to be unplayable. Has anyone played it with a pianist? Got any advice or suggestions?
I really find this piece interesting, but I don't understand it all. Lol. Anyone who knows a lot about composition care to explain it to me, cuz I don't really get it. I mean don't get me wrong, Alessi's playing is unmatched as usual and I realize that this piece has real musical value but I'm just not sure how. I'm not sure I can really hear a motif anywhere, and if I did, I lost it because the piece overall is so atonal. Lol. Anyone care to explain this piece?
I found the orchestral part in Troorkh to be vintage Xenakis, but the trombone part as written did absolutely nothing for me. Ok, I get that the trombone can play glissandos (or is it glissandi?), but I don`t have to be beaten over the head with them. It becomes trite. Conversely, the Rouse is a concerto with a titanic musical depth. The composer exploits everything the horn can do and uses the glissando only briefly for effect. Craig Mulcahy performs it with the National Symphony Orchestra in the beginning of February.
A true master of bringing emotion and intensity into his musical compositions. May he rest in peace.
E sem perder o seu lirismo. Adorei!!!
We have lost a wonderful genius and gracious human being. Thank you Maestro Rouse for all the gifts you gave to us.

This is quite simply one of the best pieces in our repertoire.
Que grande salto desde aquele trombone comportadíssimo da Idade Média. Rouse contemporâneo opera milagres com o instrumento.
Rouse renova o repertório contemporâneo para o trombone. Fantástico.

I remember being a freshman composition student and this man being refered to as a quote "Badass " .

This is what it sounds like to master your instrument...
