Mario 3 would be insanely good for this concept, its levels are bite-sized and the game has so many powerups.
Can you imagine getting a frog suit in anything other than a water level? That would be amazing.
Mario World too, it would be amazing if Nintendo improves this into other games, but no idea why they are deleting this one next year
I hope they eventually do this but keep it permanently. Would be soul crushing if that was limited as well.
I hope that instead of just getting rid of Mario 35, they would just replace with a version of SMB2 as a second season (and gradually move to other titles).
Pretty sure this is not gonna happen, but I guess dreaming doesn't hurt.
SM World would be my pick, but I can think of a ton of games that would be great with this. Something like zelda 2, but what I think Vinny would really like is UN Squadron, where the garbage you send isn't just planes but also levels you defeat on the map. Maybe some sort of team play where the team members each choose a target for the round, and the game ends when the final boss is defeated?

Hi Vinny, it’s your Scottish namesake. I’m sending this video to my 82-year-old mother. My parents, in their retirement, became consultants for the gaming magazines in the UK. I was about 5 when they bought an NES. I couldn’t get anywhere near the damn thing - Mum was always playing Mario 1 and 2, and my late Dad was such an expert in Mario 3 he sold a guide to the mini-games to a publisher. Seeing you play this stuff with a combination of expertise and affection, swells my heart.
Did they enjoy it?
I legitimately don’t believe Nintendo will actually limit the release of this game. It’s too stupid of an idea.

It's always been 2 steps forward, 1 step back for Nintendo. I'm hoping you're right about the limited release. Like, maybe they're saying that so people feel like they have to play it more, making it more popular? But then again, this IS Nintendo...
I can't help but wonder if this thing is just a trial balloon. IFF this thing remains popular and not just FOTM then maybe they pull this and put out a more expanded version. I feel like 3dAS is similar too... if it sells well, then more to come. If not on either front then we had some fun and some laughs and move on to consume next products.
This comment made me realize that they would do something similar with NES Remix had it released in current year.

People are suggesting this be expanded with the other 2d Mario games, maybe if this succeeds they'll make it a full purchase sort of like how Mario Maker isn't just a level editor.

This game is heaps of fun. I like that the key to victory is filling your opponents' levels with enemies, which basically mean you are trying to trap them in a crappy Mario Maker level.

1:16:55 That's the sound of AmaRec taking a screenshot. There's a bug where if you do Ctrl+S outside the window, when you refocus AmaRec, it registers as a screenshot. You might also notice it happen with Ctrl+Z, which starts a recording. I'd recommend disabling the hotkeys for those.
I love the hell out of this game for some reason, what a shame that it’s limited time.
Perhaps they will extend it like they did with Jump Rope Challenge.
When Nintendo does shit like this it boggles my mind. Why do all this programming and porting, just to release it for 6mo or whatever? Like Mr. Wilson said, hopefully the extend it or just decide to keep it up and do updates. Maybe the might release all these games separately for higher prices. 30 for the older Mario's and like 20 for Mario 35... Dunno, but its definitely anti-consumer.

On the one hand, Nintendo are legendary assholes and literally always have been, ESPECIALLY during the NES days, on the other, I kinda wonder if this isn't a test run to see how popular it is and they may end up releasing a more complete paid version or something. It feels like it runs some variant of Mario Maker 2's engine so maybe they could cram together all of the Mario's into one.
But it's Nintendo so they'll probably just shut it down with a big grin on their face.
They need to make a deluxe version of this game where if you beat a level, you get sent to another level in a different 2D Mario like Mario 3

It's important to note that killing enemies with fire always gives the least amount of time. Usually a better idea to hit a block under the enemy, kick a shell into them, reach a goal or stomp them to gain much more seconds.
Watching Vinny whiff victory is physically painful.

I got #1 on my fourth run. It's pretty fun being a game you can be in the top 3 pretty consistently, seems like nearly every run for me, unlike a lot of royale games.
Yeah this game seems very suited for people like me, who are good at Mario games and nothing else.

not a problem huh? I basically have to play docked with controller nowdays cause the joycons drift so much its completely unplayable. Can't even navigate the switch menus anymore.

@@ShinMajin Even better, order a couple of Joycon sticks online and the two screwdrivers you need to substitute the faulty ones. Saves you money, time and helps with future drifting problems. Just be careful with the ribbon cables.
I mainly use my pro controller. Things I've noticed with my joy cons and why I've hardly used them. They act like I'm miles away when I'm only on the couch and the switch is out in the open and keep loosing connection causing it to keep sending the last button press or whatever, the motion stuff in games seems to lag, the left analog stick drifts, the thing you use to tighten the wrist strap on one broke the first time I tried to use it, something rattles a lot when one of the joycons vibrates(can't remember which one), one joy con vibrates intensely and the other vibrates less than what you might consider normal. I've updated them and calibrated the analog sticks which I thought helped but didn't for very long. I'm very gentle with my electronics so I don't think it's anything I did.

Last year's Mario Royale did get a name change to try and avoid nintendo's copyright ninjas, but it didn't work. the whole game lasted about 2 weeks and is gone forever, not whatever that nonce in chat said.

Inverting the view, random blocks, poison mushrooms, remove power-up, no jump, random jump...

It's the number of coins are added to your bank at the end of the match, which you can spend on advantages (starting with a certain powerup) at the beginning of the next.

Yea I was a little annoyed with him misquoting Nintendo, though you have to admit they are handling the situation pretty poorly. Switch joycons are some of the most expensive controllers on the market right now and they suck eggs.
Yeah, even though Nintendo themselves didn't say that, I have to say that the Joy-Con issue is infuriating.
Joy-Cons are like the worst controllers I've ever had just because of the drift problems that make everything unplayable. My current set if fine atm, and I do have a pro controller that I use whenever I'm home, but the first set had drifting issues and it was so annoying.

I have absolutely no idea how this game's competitive elements work and I still love it. I hope it takes off like Tetris 99 did and they add more to it. Also, do you just unlock icons randomly, or is there a hidden achievement system or something? I noticed that I got Mario Turning Around after my first round, but Vinny got Luigi.
Basically manual targeting is good at the beginning if you can spot the noobs who don't start with a powerup or go very slowly. Easy targets and lots of free coin. If you have multiple attackers and low on time, hit down on the right stick and you'll rack up a ton of enemies
We need a Sonic version asap

It would have to be a race version of this with the one in last place being removed. It would probably have to be one of the rush games, Sonic 2, or Sonic advance 2.
My luck is incredible: I got drift in both of my joy-cons, then I got new ones, then I played about an hour-long session of Odyssey then got drift in my left joy-con again.

I got lucky, I had my Switch since launch and only got drift this year. Hopefully the new ones last as long as the old ones.
Never had drifts with any controller before. And this is from ps1 to 4 OG xbox to one and gamecube. However 3 months after i got my switch it got drift. Now im almost scared to play handheld cause i dont wanna fork up for another joycon.
I found a way to fix mine using compressed air cans.

They could do this concept with Zelda 1 or maybe even zelda 2 no problem. Just randomize the exits of the screens and sending hoards of enemies in that game is lethal.
This game does look interesting to me, I'm liking thinking of all the different strategies that could emerge. It puts the original game in a very new and fun context.
I really don't like this time limited release however. The only reason I could comprehend them doing it is because they don't want to support the servers for that long. However if that's the case, make a good online system and charge people appropriately for it. If it's just a ploy to get FOMO money or for them to replace it with a new game I find that predatory business behavior. So I'm not going to get the game due to that.
That's a shame, because I've thought of some nifty strategies:
-endlessly surf level 1-2.
Get the warp zone at the end and try to keep yourself in 1-2. That way you're able to just focus on the enemies in a level you're familiar with. You might be able to leave gathering difficult enemies to the other 34 players. There's multiple power-ups for time and fire flowers. There's the mushroom for coins along with an easy coin bonus level. The second screen of the level has the pillars that trap the enemies to defeat them for easy time bonuses.
-pick an underwater level as your level you bring to the queue, that way you can add the unexpected enemies of squids and fish.
-pick the bridge level with all of the flying fish as Vinny said and swarm the other players with fish shenanigans.
-stupidly minor, but if you defeat Bowser with the fire flower you normally see that Bowser was really a minion in disguise. Here it looks like they count as a second enemy, so defeating Bowser with fire flower gets you one extra goomba friend to chuck at those who oppose you. Truly this is the most devious of strategies.
