Methods of application ie into the pitcher or mist spray etc. or root feed and dilution rates, specific brands. Maxsea popular in the States is difficult and expensive in the UK to obtain, any alternatives? I've read Orchid Focus works well . @@California_Carnivores Outside. Aurora Illinois. I have them on the south part of my house. Last year I had them on the railing of my porch. They were getting plenty of sunlight all day long and did well. This year I tried putting them on a table so they wouldn’t fall over if it got windy. But I noticed a shadow would cast on them in the morning from the railing. and later, on in the day, they would have some cover from a tree blocking the sunlight. My B52 was growing fine, but my regular flytrap wasn’t growing. I just put them back on the railing in the same place I had last year that gets more sunlight, so I hope that works

    Question, does using the hose water hurt the plants? I soak mine in distilled water but the hose looks a lot more efficient. I treat any other water other than rain water as poison but am I overreacting about the water?

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Our water comes out of the hose at a very low TDS so we’re lucky and can use it for everything safely. That being said, for bare rooting, you can totally use a hose and then just give the plants a quick rinse in distilled afterwards! It’ll make the work so much easier!

    I did this today and it did not go well. The rhizomes were beige-brown and squishy, almost the consistency of uncooked chicken breast. Does that mean it is dead?
    We are in the Carolinas (where they are native) and in zone 7b/8a. However, right around Christmas we had a cold snap where the temperature did not climb out of freezing and got as low as 9 F. Maybe it was too cold.
    Now I am worried my pitcher plants may have the same problem. The flytrap was completely blackened on top. My pitchers are in various stages of dry brown to reddish purple.

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no! Usually they can tolerate a cold snap like that but sometimes things do go wrong. If the rhizomes were squishy and not firm, that is a sign they are not going to bounce back. I would wait and see with the Sarracenia because they may surprise you still. I’m sorry! It’s always so hard when something like that happens 😫

    • @salvatorelivreri
      @salvatorelivreri ปีที่แล้ว

      @@California_Carnivores I hope the pitchers do OK. I repotted some and they had significant roots but no rhizomes could be felt. And two so far have had firm rhizomes (very dark brown, but could be staining from the soil). Those two rhizomes were about 3/4 inch long. I made two videos. The first shows the RIP Venus Flytrap squishy. The second shows the lineup of my Sarracenia which are half reddish purple and half dried out brown. Interesting that some of those red ones were green at one time and some were the same red. I may be shopping for some more from you soon!

  • @HelgrafFireHammer
    @HelgrafFireHammer ปีที่แล้ว

    So, my flytrap did the most bizarre thing, I wanted some input maybe on what I can do?
    I had a B52 Venus Flytrap that was growing well since it came in, it wasn't one of yours since I'm in europe but it was healthy and growing nicely. After it got settled in, I decided to repot it into fresh soil.
    As soon as I did that though, the rhizome quite literally split in half. The old, dark, black bits of thr rhizome just fell off while the white, firm part stayed, well, white and firm.
    Since then, the plant stopped making new leafs, and every pre-existing leaf started to die back *extremely* slowly. The rhizome is still white, firm and healthy, and I *think* I see new leafs comming up but I can't tell, but yeah, the plant isn't doing well lol
    Any idea on what happened and what i can do to help it recover?
    Thank you!

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be that was just a timing thing; we often see older parts of the rhizome turn black and die back and it could’ve already been starting that cycle when you were potting. Then, that big chunk of rhizome was a lot of the momentum for the plant. So it’s now a smaller plant with less power behind it. I would just give it time and it should get back to growing. You can apply a diluted fertilizer to it to give it a boost as well. We use Maxsea.
