This style is also called ”deadbug” and is pretty common in the DIY-synth world. If someone is interested you should check out Juanito Moore here on YT. He has built a whole modular synth using this style and he also uses cardboard as pcbs and panels. Also tin cans and lids if i remember correctly. Check out his video where he builds the 808-kick circuit for example, in the end of the vid when he test the circuit you see his whole modular setup. I think its pretty cool. You can build whatever legendary circuits you want for 0,1$ if you skip the hardware and just invest in the components needed. Cardboard works fine for home-diy’ing and learning puropses. Tin can lids make great panels. It’s not my style at all but i do think it’s cool. I’d rather have a gigantic modular in cardboard i built for 50$ than buy the same modules for 5000$. Same shit. It cost 5$ to order 5 manufactured pcbs from JLCPCB with shipping to Sweden included and you can get whatever customized pcb you want that way. Thats more my style. Kicad is free and very quick and easy to make pcb designs in.
air wiring is so sloppy looking though. prone to vibration damage so bad haha. im guilty of it sometimes myself if i want to do something impermanent. i thought dead bug is when you use copper clad pieces to provide isolation?
Theremin is basically only a audio signal (sine or slightly triangular wave) generator, and you can only change frequency and amplitude of it. The audio signal is practically the difference signal between two higher frq oscillators and the player forms a physical part an "adjustable" capacitor of one of those two oscillators just by moving his hand near the "antenna" which is in fact a part of that capacitor. So in fact Theremin is not so mythical thing because even if it seems magical, you practically only can change frq and amplitude of that thing by moving your hands in most peculiar ways, but still you cannot control anything else than amplitude and frq. So if theremin does not work well, it can be more interesting instrument than a fully functional one. If I remember correct, The Beatles wrote a song about Theremin. Name of that song was Heremin, Theremin and Everywheremin. 😜
And here was I thinking this was going to be just another fix-it video. Boy was I wrong. This is one of the most interesting repairs you've performed. Love it!
I guess dropping $250 is ok if you're not comfortable with making your own...I googled theremin kits and they're like $40. If it were me I'd get one of the kits and get a nice box a wine bottle came in and turn that into my enclosure. Then enjoy the wine while you make it!
I have the smaller version of this and it has the same build "quality" internally. It also developed issues over time similar to the one in this video.
This is the instrument that made the weird sounds during early sci-fi and horror movies. There are folks who can play therimins really well, even down to using it to imitate human and animal voices. The instrument shown here is crudely made-guess it just works. If I can remember one antenna controls pitch, other the volume.
Jokes are on point in this video Brad. R2...lmao ! I haven't laughed in a good bit man I've been struggling like many I'm sure but you gave me a good laugh today. As is the norm with the guitologist ! Thank you bro
I was hoping you would go into your studio and throw down some cool licks man!! Our band had a theremin back in the day. Orange Sunshine and the theremin, and I never laughed so hard in my life! Well, that and nunchucks with small strips of white sheets taped to the ends of them, and a black light was cool too..
I can't believe that thing, with the wiring and components the way they were, was $250. I was going to suggest it was a DIY kit. I think back in the day the kits were pretty popular.
I mean at least it works, but you've gotta be bloody kidding! It looks like some high-schooler's floxillator science project or something! They couldn't even 'design' a matrix board version of this thing? The way this thing is built it looks like a prototype. Or maybe the original pcb was snapped, fried, or fubarred somehow, so they just jury rigged another circuit together to get it going? Good job you got it to be 'playable' anyway brad!
Leon was a absolute brain. He created the the “thing “that bugged the White House and that was his in to American.Incredible story that the US wants to forget
Hello Brad. You could probably build a metal detector out of that circuit. I built a BFO metal detector out of a schematic diagram from a website several years back. It was a just for fun build. You’d set it to just a barely audible threshold frequency. Was it detecting the ring on your finger the whole time? I had just noticed towards the end of your video.
What is weird is i am seeing comments popping up in the little window beneath the video. They keep changing . But....... When i click on the comments to open them up to read or comment myself . There is only showing one comment ?
I got front row seats for a Joe Bonamassa gig years ago and he was using one of these, I can’t recall quite what he was doing with it but I’m off to scour TH-cam now…
2:57 Just got home from working and was drinking a beer watching this and about spit it up....lol so funny! Thanks Brad! I was also wondering if you still have your chickens and how that's is going? Take care!
Hahaha. Who would have thought? A theremin on the Guitologist's channel! And on the evidence presented here, your successful future in music hall beckons. Make sure you post the tour dates well in advance. There is sure to be a big demand.
I saw a engl 120 amp head that retails for 3000 for 700 but only the 4 th channel works would it be worth buying and fixed from someone like you? Great videos
Does it say Electro Harmonix anywhere on that circuit? Seriously though, I had a couple of their early pedals, the big muff and LPB1 power booster and they were wired the same way.

That looks like a spider and a soldiering Iron had a fight in the back of a radio.
L O L
I don't care what anyone else thinks that's friggin hilarious.
🤣👍

Brad, you ok with that?
air wiring is so sloppy looking though. prone to vibration damage so bad haha. im guilty of it sometimes myself if i want to do something impermanent. i thought dead bug is when you use copper clad pieces to provide isolation?
Love the R2 reference. That sounds a lot like it.

R2 was pretty spot on!
Now I know where so many TV sounds came from.
i knew alot of old sci-fi and horror had used one and some music but blown away with r2d2 : )
And here was I thinking this was going to be just another fix-it video. Boy was I wrong. This is one of the most interesting repairs you've performed. Love it!
My dog is goin wild😂😂
(Of COURSE...)
Makes racecar acceleration and shifting sounds, any self-respecting dude.
Good vid brother! Dig it.
Wow what a cool piece! I wouldn't have thought many of these would still exist at all, let alone in Kentucky!👍
This accurately replicates the sound the fringes hear in their heads when TDS kicks in…
LMFAO . . .exactly 😎
anyone that supports gump is deranged .
Now that's some funky circuitry 🤣🤣
That ended up Niiiiiiiice ! You dialed it in Tight!👍
I got mine back in highschool around 2011-12 or so. Brought it to at least one gig i know. Pretty cool wacky stuff.
So cool that it is made in the manhattan circuit/ deadbug style.
It's point-to-point! It must sound wonderful. LOL
I had no idea you lived next to Herman and Lilly 👍👍
I'm getting that "Plan 9 from Outer Space" vide!! Fascinating, Brad!!!!
Lol that looks like I soldered it. The only difference is this actually works. Great vid.
The only thing I heard from this video "size doesn't matter!"
I have that exact model. very fun
I guess dropping $250 is ok if you're not comfortable with making your own...I googled theremin kits and they're like $40. If it were me I'd get one of the kits and get a nice box a wine bottle came in and turn that into my enclosure. Then enjoy the wine while you make it!
Nice one Brad, that sent my cats bonkers... lol
Sounds like you need to get a theramin for your cat
Dude, you should build one on your channel.
I have the smaller version of this and it has the same build "quality" internally. It also developed issues over time similar to the one in this video.
cool video i enjoyed seeing all the components all put together using the dead bug method and how you adjusted the thing.
That is a trippy build!

I thought it was a joke thumbnail, I've never seen anything put together like that and actually works
the R2 thing made me actually chuckle :D
Jokes are on point in this video Brad. R2...lmao ! I haven't laughed in a good bit man I've been struggling like many I'm sure but you gave me a good laugh today. As is the norm with the guitologist ! Thank you bro
A Theramin? Now there's something you don't see everyday!
Great stuff man very entertaining 😊
Isn’t The Beach Boys good vibrations a theramin ? Not sure
Could do an impromptu Jimmy Page Whole Lotta Love breakdown performance with that thing
you fixed it Brad!
Reminds me of one of those boutique point to point wired effects pedals, without the boutique appeal.
when you said ....."what is it R2" i spit my drink

I was waiting for the intro to "Good Vibrations"
You should slip a distortion or fuzz circuit in there.
Delay! I made a few noisemaker circuits back in the day and they always sounded much better with delay and reverb to fatten up the sound.
When these are played right they sound really good
That spooky music scares me to no end.
But I can't commend you enuf bro.
Gr8 video
I can't believe that thing, with the wiring and components the way they were, was $250. I was going to suggest it was a DIY kit. I think back in the day the kits were pretty popular.
Good lord that solder job is adding about 20% resistance.
7.5 volts? Finally I can use my Hum Debugger power supply for something else!
I hate the hum debugger .
Bought
Plugged it in
Played a few second
Instant regret
Horrible sounding thing
I mean at least it works, but you've gotta be bloody kidding! It looks like some high-schooler's floxillator science project or something! They couldn't even 'design' a matrix board version of this thing?

🎼🎵 A theremin acting funny? Well isn't that a bit strange.
Leon was a absolute brain. He created the the “thing “that bugged the White House and that was his in to American.Incredible story that the US wants to forget
Finally a good video
you killed me with that r2d2 joke
'Theremin, Ether Music and Espionage' by Albert Glinksy is a recommended read for those into bio's or non-fcition
wow the build itself.. i dont know if i am horrified or impressed.. but probably more impressed and amuzed :D
Christmas tree 🎄 wiring. I haven't seen that in a while 😅
I was waiting to here the Star Trek theme.

Wow you just unearthed a possible theremin making business for enterprising electronics enthusiasts!
You break one of those connections in that theremin You may never figure out where one of those diodes go.
I don't have one...and I must have one.
Man that's one savage build.. yet fascinating build style... kinda beautiful/functional ?
Wonder how compliant that unit is to regulatory hoo ha ??
It's called "Dead Bug" electronics construction style.
the gear shifting had me falling out. I drive standard...lolz..
I saw you had 666 views and I clicked here just to rescue you from that! And to watch the video
Haha, 667 is actually one eviler!
Frank Hannon from Tesla loves his theramin 🤘 Edisons Medicine 🤘
my dog hates this video😂 I had to watch it with headphones
When in doubt, break out the power tools.
That sounds like a interesting toy.
Lo-Fi science fiction goodness!
I got front row seats for a Joe Bonamassa gig years ago and he was using one of these, I can’t recall quite what he was doing with it but I’m off to scour TH-cam now…
tks.
Too damn cool!!!!
it's one of the first circuits you learn if you're interested in electronic theory. it's an ancient circuit.
"This is Ceti Alpha 5!"
Most people used this for sound effects.... but if you encounter someone who can REALLY play one, it's got a violin vibe.
You made it to fifth gear man.
And he caught fifth gear rubber.
That kind of soldering is how you solder board for very high frequencies. Like 400mhz. But cleaner, much cleaner
You playing Edgar Winter’s lead in Frankenstein?
I was waiting for it!
This would mix great with a Hurdy Gurdy
And a banjo!
any noise device with THAT sort of gliss - always echo .
@7:54 the communicator on Star trek. Or is it the hailing signal? Whatever it's star trek
Build one Brad 😂
2:57 Just got home from working and was drinking a beer watching this and about spit it up....lol so funny! Thanks Brad! I was also wondering if you still have your chickens and how that's is going? Take care!

Is your neighbour Brian Wilson
Does it say Electro Harmonix anywhere on that circuit? Seriously though, I had a couple of their early pedals, the big muff and LPB1 power booster and they were wired the same way.
When you took the cover off and found two porcupines inside?
That sounds very cool. Perfect Halloween sounds. I have to get one.
You should!
A thru a was used in the theme song for the original Star Trek.
Plug that baby into a delay pedal and sport some Jimmy Page whole lotta love vibes! 👍
Dang play that thang
My dog is tripping out. Looking around everywhere.
Great title. Real grabber Brad! 😂
@3:14 Dogs are twisting their heads off.
I was listening to Teslas Edison's Medicine earlier and was just thinking how cool the Theremin sounds. Interesting device or instrument? lol
Cool sound effects ,something different. The band Tesla used one on psychotic supper.
That shit lookin like a big ass IED or somethin.
Anyone find the schematic? I would love to build one.
