    My dude... Sublime sounds genuine because they were always 100... the band didn't become famous until after Bradley died, sadly. So only the few of us that were lucky enough to vibe with them when he was still around knew who they were. It's all good though, the cream always rises to the top and eventually their music blew up like it should have.

    I love that you did this!! This was a huge part of my growing up. I love Sublime. I always will. I will say that it's my opinion that there is no band like this. People say this is skah... I don't really think of it that way ... It's their own reggae- Long Beach sound. (I'm a 36 year old white lady, mom and just a person from the Eastside of Indianapolis, and I love Young Thug. I love your musical taste.) Appreciate the content!

  • @DKChubs
    @DKChubs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Ska, it's pronounced like the end of "Yah". In it's purest form it's what reggae CAME from way back in the day. In the 80s/90s, punk rockers got ahold of it and started blending it with anything and everything, so you can have cats like the Skatalites, Hepcat, Sublime, the Bosstones, and the Selecter all getting filed into the same genre when NONE of them sound alike outside of the Jamaican soul flowing in the music.
    I'm going to recommend Fishbone as another 'ska' band you might want to give a listen to. Where Sublime mixes ska/reggae with basic punk rock, Fishbone mixes it in with funk, and does it better than anyone. Give "Ma and Pa" or "Everyday Sunshine" a listen.

      There was also that two-tone ska back in the 80s in England. I haven't listened to much of it though. Skastory is important. There's also quite a few good contemporary bands. Los Skagarelos, We are the Union, and Streetlight Manifesto have a harder punk vibe to em, whereas Skapara and Cat Bite are a lot more chill.

    They are a mix of:
    Ska: a rhythm related to Reggae, but much faster. I.e Wrong Way, Date Rape etc. Reggae, Dub, Punk, Rock, Rap.
    They married a lot of styles and influences together (there are lots of other 90s groups that did similar things) but never to be recreated. The drummer and bass player tried, Long Beach Dub allstars, Sublime with Rome. Both ok...but without Bradley never the Same. A true (troubled) genious.

    Ska is an ancestor of Reggae. Similar to R&B and Blues but a different emphasis on the beat.

    Another band that is along this line of music would be Rancid. They were Punk/ Ska (pronounced, sc'aaah) Sublime sounds real because they never became mainstream since the singer Bradley died as they just started getting big. All the songs they have they wrote together as struggling musicians out of So Cal in the early 90's. 40oz 2 Freedom is one of my top albums. It's the type of album that I love every song on it! Not many bands/rapers can do that. Enter the 36 Chambers by WuTang, & System of a Downs first self titled album are 2 others that I put in that category, among others.

      I get medical weed💨. Love some Star Dawg, but I like to mix Strawberry Kush & Layer Cake. The most elevated was some Cali weed - the sidewalk looked like a movie theater film reel as I was walking. 🎥 I could hear it too, lol.

    Yes they’re influenced by Ska among other genres. It’s pronounced Skahh. Like saying “ahh” with sk before it.

    It's really unfortunate what happened to Sublime and their lead singer, Bradley Nowell. It was a talented group and they had alot more in them for sure. Don't get addicted to drugs, kids.
    Ska is pronounced like "skah". If you want other bands of that genre that were big around the same time as Sublime, try these:
    No Doubt - "Spiderwebs"
    Reel Big Fish - "Sell Out"

    It's pronounced sk-ah. Very few other bands sounded like this. The closest things I would say is the albums "halfway between here and there" and "progression" by the Rx Bandits and maybe "Turn the radio off" and "why do they rock so hard?" by Reel Big Fish. Ska has a lot of great acts, but Sublime was unique even in their own genre.
