    I always wondered what the pencil gesture was and whether it was only a cinematic idea but turns out it is actually a genuine artistic method. Nice and thanks 😊

    Excellent! Easy to understand, the teacher didn't rush through anything and no distracting music in the background. Very professional!

    This reminded me of my college days. This is exactly how I was taught in the late 80's. This technique is the absolute best!

    I knew that artists used pencils for measuring but I didn’t know in what way. Now I know and it will definitely help in the future!

    Hello, Vladimir. Thank you for this very thorough and informative video 😊 I do have one question - I know we’re supposed to measure while being an arm’s length away from the drawing board to fully extend the arm..but does this mean you’re maintaining this distance from the board during the whole time you draw?
    What if you need to get closer to the board to use the writing grip to draw finer details? Would you sit closer? But doesn’t changing your position change your view of the model?
    This has always been a problem for me when drawing from life 🤔

      Thanks for asking. Measuring at an arm length helps to see the model and drawing simultaneously. For drawing smaller details, you can use the writing grip and sit or stand closer to the easel.

    You need to make sure you're stating what sight-size is vs comparative drawing.

    Thanks for the video.
    A question:
    Sometimes when doing a still life, i find that the drawing proportions keep changing (I'll measure a length, draw it, check back, and see that the measurement has changed). I outstretch my arm when measuring. Other times, the actual measurements seem to be correct when i check, but the drawing proportions are much different from the subject's proportions. This seems to happen most when I'm drawing from life, but not when drawing from an image. Do you have any advice to minimize the apparent distortion?

    • @DrawingArtAcademy
      @DrawingArtAcademy  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are doing it the wrong way. You do "sight-sizing", but instead, you need to measure "relative proportions", which will stay the same even if you move a bit. Check this article drawingacademy.com/sight-size-drawing-method

      @@DrawingArtAcademy Having checked back at this reply about a year later , it makes much more sense intuitively. Thanks for the advice - i will surely try it out!

    what is meant by keeping the pencil perpendicular to our line of sight??

    • @DrawingArtAcademy
      @DrawingArtAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for asking about geometry. Do you know what the line of sight is? If so, the pencil should be at 90 degrees to that line. In other words, the line of sight is the normal vector to the virtual plane that coincides with the pencil. Sorry if your math education is not adequate to visualise what is explained above

      @totally_notracist The same techniques will apply for measuring length and width alignments, crosspoints, angles, and relative proportions

    Good video but does not explain using the pencil to measure something from a far away distance like an object in a landscape then drawing that object smaller on a canvas while measuring with the pencil for comparison.

    • @DrawingArtAcademy
      @DrawingArtAcademy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think you misunderstood this video. The 5th method is measuring relative proportions. This method allows to measure any objects at any distance in relation to other objects. The same ratio can be then applied on the canvas. What you probably have in mind is called "sight-sizing", which is different and inferior to relative proportions described in this lesson. Watch it to the end. You are welcome.
