    Nice work Tony. Yes, better to get those bends in early. Thanks, keep growing

    Cork bark oaks look good Tony, you should keep training the second tree into a corkscrew shape as it grows.. you know... to take the cork out!! 🍾

      In a strange way, I actually like the idea of making a truly awful corkscrew cork bark oak!

    Nice flexible little trees! You are right.. a few years from now you’ll be right chuffed. 👍

      Yeah, we have to look towards the future with this kind of material. I was just watching a video by Bonsaify, and he was working on a stunning little cascade juniper which he started from a cutting seven years ago. It seems like a long time, but before you know it, a few years have passed by et voila!

    A favourite of mine! I looked after a personal arboretum the gentleman had a collected seed specimen on which the bark had started corking nicely! Should make a really interesting bonsai

      Very nice! I'd love to see a mature tree with a proper cork bark.

    I just got a couple of these myself. I definitely have to bring them in for the winter. I think I'll wire next spring. I love the little leaves

      yeah they seem like lovely trees. Unless it gets really cold, I'm leaving them out to fend for themselves!

      Nice one Keith. You'll have to let me know how yours get on over the winter. Are you going to do some wiring on them?

      @@TonysBonsai not sure what to do will wait to get them then decide what to do when I can see what I have 😀

    You're absolutely right. Putting the bends in now leads to all sorts of options in the future even to the drastic option of chopping to a couple of inches high in several years to create massive trunk taper. However, that's an 'over-the-top' suggestion, you can cut to any height and have whatever shape you desire. A nice start for these little Oaks. 👍👍

      I couldn;t agree more Guy. i will more than likely end up chopping these at some point, but hopefully when I do, there will at least be some movement lower down.

    Looking good. They're Mediterranean oaks so might need a bit of shelter to overwinter in Preston.

      that's a good point David. If it starts getting too cold, I'll pop them in the workshop by the window.

    Hi Tony.
    Beautiful plants. Unfortunately for me Poland is too cold to grow a cork-bark oak in the open.

      It will be interesting to see if they survive in northern England. I suspect I will have to protect them from very hard frosts if we get any.

    Do you have to protect during winter if they are used to warmer winters? Lovely projects in the making.

      I believe they are good down to -10, but in small pots that will probably a good 5 degrees higher, so if it starts getting down well below -5, I'll put them in my workshop. Other than that, they should be ok I hope.

    I’ve heard live oaks (q. ilex, agrifolia, wislizeni, etc…) aren’t really suitable to bonsai because they don’t repot well. I’ve got several I’m slowly working on, hoping the more mature trees will be more resilient.

    • @TonysBonsai
      @TonysBonsai 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting Jonathan. I don't know too much about them really, so like you, I'm just hoping that they will work ok.

    Hi Tony,my wife collected some fallen acorns and we planted them and they have grown nicely for 2 years,can you advise what to do next?

    • @TonysBonsai
      @TonysBonsai ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, no problem. I would suggest that you wait until springtime and then dig them up and cut off the tap root. You can then put them in a decent sized pot with some nice free draining soil and leave them to recover for the spring and summer, and if you are feeling confident you could try applying some wire to add a bit of movement to the trunks

    Hope you on commission! Never heard of that site before and been looking for somewhere to buy starter trees for ages! Just ordered three! Cork bark oak, dwarf pomegranate and a Chinese quince.
