Happy anniversary Contra! Hope you guys enjoy this playthrough! Sometime later I'd like to play this again and do an alternate path! Thanks for watching! -Mike
Long time fan, probably over a decade haha! Never really did commenting, but I have to say, awesome work as always, Mike. Best streamer out! Sincerely, thank you guys for the years of entertainment.
I love this game, it's by far my favourite Contra game. It just has so much content with four different characters to choose from each with their own set of completely different weapons, a very handy slide move, absolutely insane boss battles (the train boss being one of my personal favourites) multiple roots to take throughout the game etc. It is mental just how much is going on, on screen at the same time with the massive over the top explosions and tons of sprites on screen at once with no slow down or frame-rate drops, from the moment you start the game till the end credits it just never lets up. Also if i remember correctly if you press the A button whilst shooting you can switch between shooting and running at the same time and standing still whilst you shoot, which helps the gameplay immensly and something which would have been nice in Gunstar Heroes instead of having to have one or the other depending on your character choice and being stuck with that till the end of the game, Contra Hardcorps handles this much better. What a great, great game.
My favourite game on the Mega Drive and my favourite Contra. Although I played Japanese version and it's much easier, because you have 3 shots before you lose a life (instead of 1 shot = lose a life in the American version). So effectively you have 9 tries before continue instead of 3.
Konami sure knew how to get the most out of the Genesis hardware: Rocket Knight Adventures, Castelvania: Bloodlines, Contra Hard Corps... three of the best games on the system, easly into the top 20. Those where the days. Great vid!
...well before Contra, Metal Gear, Castlevania, and Silent Hill became pachislot machines, no less! Just don't do that with DDR or Love Plus or we're gonna have more than words...
As a Sega fanboy as a kid from the SMS days on I was always mad that Contra and Castlevania didn't come to Sega platforms but when they finally did they were absolutely amazing this is when Konami was at their peak and the pride and care they took in all their games was absolutely amazing. Please come back Konami of yore :(
indeed. i wonder if we'll see a Gunstar Heroes playthrough, sometime. another childhood favorite of mine, that's for sure. plus, another Treasure game, like Hard Corps. *correction, Alien Wars. thanks comments.
+CynicalBastard No, they worked on Contra III on SNES before they left to form Treasure. They formed Treasure in 1992 and Hard Corps was released in 1994.
1.21 gigawatts lol Is this a joke? Sounds like you never played Hard Corps. I beat Contra 3 on my third try, and I wasn't even trying that hard. I'd say it's about as hard as Contras on the NES = not that hard at all. It took me literally days of constant concentrated playing to beat Hard Corps. The only Contra harder than Hard Corps is Contra 4 on the DS and only on hard difficulty.
The name of the final boss is "Li I" and it's one of the artworks from the father of the biomechanics - H.R. Giger (LI I”, H. R. GIGER, 1974) - the painting is Giger's girlfriend - she committed suicide - Li Tobler. Also pretty much the whole game is a tribute to his surrealistic bio-mechanical art, one more example is from StarCraft - the Zergs and the iconic Sarah Kerrigan she is pretty much the same thing as the final boss.
J Marx yep I did the same thing as well. Sometimes it actually sticks on them and annihilate bosses. i dont know if its a glitch or an actual move that can be executed.
Props to Mike. Just a few tips for anyone who wants to beat this game (it's worth doing it): Brownie (the robot) should be the first character you pick, just like Mike did. Because its sprite is small, a lot of the projectiles will whiff it; it has a float-y kind of jump thanks to its jet-pack; and, like you may have noticed, two of its weapons auto lock onto enemies. This will make your play through a lot easier than playing with other characters. Also, the Japanese version has three life bars per life. So much for the myth of Japanese games being a lot harder :P !CONTRA RULES!
Considering that Treasure (the company in the 90s founded by former Konami employees) was founded before this game's release, I find it pretty interesting how Treasure-inspired this game seems to be. I love how nuts this game is. It feels very different from the other games in the series around this time. Btw, in the Japanese version, you had a *life meter*. Three hits before you die. That was removed for the US. That said, holy crap you're good at this game!
You make my 7 year old self feel incompetent. And here I was thinking I used to be ok at this game. Man, the nostalgia here. My dad used to be so good at this that I could hardly keep up. This really brings back memories.
@@dmitriyparfenov This may be a reply to an old post, but, just curious...What makes Browny easy mode? I always felt like he was the trickiest to use. Sheena has always been my preferred character in this game. Maybe I'm missing something.
Gosh the explosions and animations are so buttery smooth in this game, it's fantastic. I really wish more developers could have taken advantage of the Genesis's faster hardware the way Konami definitely displays here. It's too bad, other than Treasure, Technosoft, Compile, (and obviously Sega), few developers really invested in the system to show what it could really do. Great playthrough Mike, I haven't beaten this one yet. Hope to see you guys play other 16-bit classics. (Btw PRO TIP idk if you knew this, but if you *hold B&A simultaneously, you can lock and unlock your movement to aim like in Contra 3*) It corresponds with SHOT I you see next to your health bar.
I got this game the year it came out, beat it and found the multiple endings. I was 8 years old. @11:43 you missed the secret boss battles that lead to the secret ending to the game.
Patriarca I beat Contra 3 on hard mode without continues...Contra Hard Corps has tougher bosses to me still and it'll be a while before I beat it without continues.
U have no idea how much I appreciate this video. I was 11 or 12 when this game out my cousin and I would play the shit out of it when he came over to my house. It really brings back memories. I was wondering how this game would be reviewed on TH-cam, which brought me here. This is, in my opinion, the BEST Contra game, hands down. Yes, it's better then The Alien Wars. I love the background and the cinematic quality of this game, not to mention the big werewolf guy.
Thank you for great video. Please do Robocop vs Terminator on Genesis! It's very difficult, and very fun to watch. Can't believe you still haven't done it.
I've never been able to beat this game with anyone but brownie. Not only is his weapon selection arguably the best, the jetpack and his low hitbox just make him super easy to play with.
Missing alucard I was fine breezing thru both castle's. but as Richter it's sooo tough.. I got with Richter to i think beginning of the upside down castle 5 min past the beginning of that. I think chapel.. those giant birds they keep appearing ..with Richter it's fucking hard I wanted to punch myself lol it was frustrating
aestheticstorm very true.. but that soul steal magic is awesome... but you level up easy and find some powerful weapons randomly.. Richter is much more difficult.. that would be one hell of play thru .. that a straight blood and guts routine..
Wow I asked you to do this a while back, and here you are doing it. I think it's great you really listen to the fans :) awesome job keep it up, and thank you.
I didn't have many genesis games, this was one of them. Needless to say, it was a great game to have. The final boss theme is actually my ringtone lol.
The Sega Genesis IS the Mega Drive. As a matter of fact, Mega Drive is the correct name, but for some reason Sega decided to call it Genesis on the US. Don't believe me? Google is your friend.
I have to say: Impressive gameplay man, it's a super hard game that doesn't give you a lifebar (unlike the japanese version) so finishing it it's a thing of hardcore gamers. Well done, keep up the good work
I love watching these. It's actually a good guide as well. You kind of inspired me Mike. I decided to try and beat a bunch of old games. Just finished Castlevania 3 on NES, so now I've downloaded Rondo of Blood for TurboGraphX 16 on Wii VC and started playing that (As well as Adventure Rebirth after I saw you guys play it).
How did I not know about this game growing up? I would have loved this! I only ever had a nes and a sega genesis. man this would have been awesome to own.
Holy shit this game has got to be the best game I've played in my childhood. I didn't have many Genesis games back then, but thank god I had this one. I remember there was a part where you climb up the side of a rocket or something, and one part you're in an arena against some gigantic guy that almost fills the entire room, it was so awesome.
yesssssssssss more contra. I love this and Hardcore Uprising so much, Contra's always been one of my favorite series, and it's only improved by robots and frikkin werewolves
I remember I had this as Probotector. Found it really tough, and eventually was able to skip levels via cartridge tilt. Only managed it a handful of times though.
So, based on what we find out in Contra: Shattered Soldier and the prequel Hard Corps Uprising, we can safely say Bahamut was like Big Boss from the Metal Gear series. He was a hero, but found out the truth on the Triumvirate, became a terrorist to overthrow them, but was labeled as a villain and we end up killing him based on false beliefs.
Happy anniversary Contra! Hope you guys enjoy this playthrough! Sometime later I'd like to play this again and do an alternate path! Thanks for watching! -Mike
Damn it Cinemassacre where is Power rangers part 2 haha im so keen to watch it! Honestly love your work keep it up!
Cinemassacre I knew one day you would play this game. I'm so excited to watch! keep up all the great content!
Cinemassacre Have you ever thought of playing Contra 4 on the Ds
Cinemassacre you are the best guys! Hello from Argentina
Long time fan, probably over a decade haha! Never really did commenting, but I have to say, awesome work as always, Mike. Best streamer out! Sincerely, thank you guys for the years of entertainment.
the graphics are amazing. blast processing is strong with this game.
One of the best games on the Genesis.
How was this comment made three hours ago?
He came really early.
That's what she said.
oh, snap!
Totally agree!
not only the play style vary with character, the choices you make lead to different paths, adding a ton of replay value.
I love this game, it's by far my favourite Contra game. Great vid!
And the soundtracks for each are just as good if not better!
It does not get more hardcore than Contra: Hard Corps.
The name says it all
Fuck yeah, Contra: Hard Corps is fucking amazing.
yea and i got pretty far in this using machine gun only
Blast.
Processing.
When KONAMI was great!
Make KONAMI great again !
#FuckKonami
...well before Contra, Metal Gear, Castlevania, and Silent Hill became pachislot machines, no less!
Just don't do that with DDR or Love Plus or we're gonna have more than words...
Godzilla 日本 MKGA!
Good times, indeed...

Mike is a monster! This game is so hard to beat!
indeed. i wonder if we'll see a Gunstar Heroes playthrough, sometime. another childhood favorite of mine, that's for sure. plus, another Treasure game, like Hard Corps. *correction, Alien Wars. thanks comments.
Contra: Hard Corps was made by Konami, not Treasure.
Monster? Hard? are you talking about the game?
+CynicalBastard No, they worked on Contra III on SNES before they left to form Treasure. They formed Treasure in 1992 and Hard Corps was released in 1994.
Dennys Francisco Ive noticed his memory is really good aswell.
i had this game as a kid it was fucking impossible, you make it look so easy, keep up the good content! :D
Thanks for watching!! -Mike
to be honest i beat it multiply times and I am not very skilled :D
Not that hard, Contra 3 is much harder.
I managed to finish it 3 times with my bros lol
Commander: I want you to proceed to the area asap and restore order:
*player then proceeds to blow up everything*
Contra is truly one of the best game series.
Yes, it's a shame that Konami sold out.
wat.. I mean it's good but not even close lol
SupaPixelGirl agreed..i have contra & super C (nes)...my fav contra 3 the alien wars (snes) & hard corpse (sega) 😆
SupaPixelGirl your awsome 😜
Stacy Pare jr it's actually hard CORPS 😂, no dead people in the title of this one
I love how he just talks and walks through the game as it'd be a piece of cake. Coz, you know, Contra is known as a piece of cake.
The name of the final boss is "Li I" and it's one of the artworks from the father of the biomechanics - H.R. Giger (LI I”, H. R. GIGER, 1974) - the painting is Giger's girlfriend - she committed suicide - Li Tobler. Damn, Mike working overtime getting all these great video's out
Hell yeah Browny! My character of choice back in the day that I eventually beat the game with, loved the fact that there were so many path choices
Positron he's my character as well. weapon c, the yoyo is the most powerful weapon in the game damage-wise in the game if I'm not mistaken.
Same
J Marx yoyo is most powerful. sometimes it actually sticks on the enemy and kills them quick.
Divontay Swing I used to tap the shoot button and hold it for a second til it started to swing away and repeat. Ripped through every boss in seconds.
J Marx yep I did the same thing as well. Sometimes it actually sticks on them and annihilate bosses. i dont know if its a glitch or an actual move that can be executed.
Props to Mike.
Just a few tips for anyone who wants to beat this game (it's worth doing it):
Brownie (the robot) should be the first character you pick, just like Mike did.
So much for the myth of Japanese games being a lot harder :P
!CONTRA RULES!
I can't remember how many times I did play this game as kid to see all endings.
One of the best video games ever made
Still my favorite Contra outside of the original, and seeing Mike completely dismantle it was most impressive. Brownie is always the right choice!
One of the best-looking and most technologically advanced games on the Genesis. It looks good enough to have been on the PS1.
This Contra is another example of how great a game could both look and sound on the genesis... I've got to give this one a play through !
You make my 7 year old self feel incompetent. And here I was thinking I used to be ok at this game.
Man, the nostalgia here. My dad used to be so good at this that I could hardly keep up. This really brings back memories.
One of the few things I feel that Sega did better than Nintendo. Contra III: The Alien Wars was pretty cool, but Hard Corps is freaking rad.
MISTA WULFY yep multiple characters and endings
The best Contra. Ever.
But Browny is easy mode. Sheena is waaaay harder.
@@dmitriyparfenov This may be a reply to an old post, but, just curious...What makes Browny easy mode? I always felt like he was the trickiest to use. Sheena has always been my preferred character in this game. Maybe I'm missing something.
Finally a Genesis title!
deezy81 they did a james and mike..not a complete playthough. and the episode turned into an snes fan boy fest
ironkong26 yep saying the game is not good as castlevania 4, those damn fan boys
I am in awe! This is also a technical marvel for the Genesis/Megadrive.
didn't even know this game existed. this is the most intense most creative contra game I've seen. definitely the best one
Mike, this is definitely a game that Genesis does what Nintendon't. Big time. I really want this game but it SO expensive!
Emulators is your friend.
Please "Hard Corps Uprising" as one of your next games! :D
Sega does what Nintendon't
Gosh the explosions and animations are so buttery smooth in this game, it's fantastic. I really wish more developers could have taken advantage of the Genesis's faster hardware the way Konami definitely displays here.

(Btw PRO TIP idk if you knew this, but if you *hold B&A simultaneously, you can lock and unlock your movement to aim like in Contra 3*) It corresponds with SHOT I you see next to your health bar.
0:33 The various paths are based on the decisions you make during the game when asked a question, not on the character you're playing as.
I got this game the year it came out, beat it and found the multiple endings. I was 8 years old. @11:43 you missed the secret boss battles that lead to the secret ending to the game.
One of the all time greats!! I love it still. Have played it about 10 times.
I'm glad you guys finally played this. Hard Corps is the best Contra.
Love the GG allin reference! :D
imo hard corps is better than contra 3
A lot of people say this. I don't think this is an opinion anymore.
Contra 3 is the best Contra. Much better level design than Hard corps.
Hard Corps is also harder than Contra 3.
No, Contra 3 on hard mode is harder.
Patriarca I beat Contra 3 on hard mode without continues...Contra Hard Corps has tougher bosses to me still and it'll be a while before I beat it without continues.
Fantastic game and great playthrough! KUDOS!
U have no idea how much I appreciate this video. I was 11 or 12 when this game out my cousin and I would play the shit out of it when he came over to my house. It really brings back memories. Where did you come from, where did you go, where did you come from, Deadeye Joe
Thank you for great video. Please do Robocop vs Terminator on Genesis! It's very difficult, and very fun to watch. Can't believe you still haven't done it.
Developed by Michael Bay
Glad to see uploads like this! Keep it up. Now i'm gonna sit back for a good 30 minutes.
I've never been able to beat this game with anyone but brownie. Not only is his weapon selection arguably the best, the jetpack and his low hitbox just make him super easy to play with.
Most Favorite Contra game of all times! I remember finding 3 or 4 different endings for this one
Holy crap that was amazing for 16 bit, still can't believe this is a genesis game! They must've pushed the system to its limit with this one!
watch ben hecks sega genesis analysis. Some aspects of the genesis hardware are overlooked
Congrats Mike you can do anything
Mike, could you be so kind as to play Castlevania: Symphony of the Night?
Missing play it all the way thru with Richter..tough as hell
Yup. Hell, there were times I rage quit with Alucard.
Whenever I fought that Crow-man boss the game would freeze for me whether I won or lost, so I was never able to beat it as Richter.
Never heard of this game. I never had a Genesis but still! WOW!
I remembered defeating this game 1 hour before school bus coming. That day, I feel like a badass :))
Wow I asked you to do this a while back, and here you are doing it. I think it's great you really listen to the fans :)
awesome job keep it up, and thank you.
don't get me wrong contra 3 on the snes is great but hard corps has more variety and innovation and is more darker
This game is so good, beat it a dozen times or so. Love your playthroughs, Mike, keep it up!
A little Blast Processing with your Contra this morning.
Literally my most beloved memory as a child. Great game
Mike's gotten really good at these lets plays. This looks tough as balls.
the beginning - "boom, boom, boom!"
"it's chicken mode, we're chicken" I can't believe I'm blessed with hearing this high-quality standard commentary.
I didn't have many genesis games, this was one of them. Needless to say, it was a great game to have. The final boss theme is actually my ringtone lol.
There are a lot of fantastic games for the Sega Genesis, but this one is far and away my favorite!
There you go! I've been waiting for this. THis is by far my favorite Mega Drive game.
The Sega Genesis IS the Mega Drive. As a matter of fact, Mega Drive is the correct name, but for some reason Sega decided to call it Genesis on the US. Don't believe me? Google is your friend.
THIS IS MY FAV SEGA GENESIS GAME OF ALL TIME!! This was Mass Effect before Mass Effect. I love this game so muchh
Hey Mike, glad to see you are finally appreciating the Genesis! Lots of good games man! Keep it up!
I got this as a kid and still have it. I do remember being shocked that it said damn
When are you gonna do another play through with a different character?
So many great memories. Thank you for playing this.
The clarity of RGB never ceases to amaze me.
You do know you can double jump when you play as Browny right?
Mike, are you a GG Allin fan? I often hear you quoting him.
Man, you should so do a playthrough of Contra: Shattered Soldier.
Gaignun Lucid Still love the intro of the game still to this day.
How did I not know about this game growing up? I would have loved this! I only ever had a nes and a sega genesis. man this would have been awesome to own.
This game was amazing! I loved the Wolfman with the chain gun arm!
This is the hardest game I've ever beaten. You make it look easy though
Also, that was Sagittarius, not Orion, lel
YES! This game is my favorite Contra game. So many ridiculous endings.
You are killing it Mike! I hope to god that some of your skill rubs off on me. Keep up the good work man
This is either the hardest Contra in the series or the easiest depending what regional version you have.
Haha ive always like that little robot...the guns Bigger then he is..Glad to see you had so much fun mike
This game was my jam! Got at least three endings and different final bosses
yesssssssssss more contra. I love this and Hardcore Uprising so much, Contra's always been one of my favorite series, and it's only improved by robots and frikkin werewolves
I've never played this Contra game, but it looks like one that I would like to pick up for my Genesis. Awesome play through, Mike.
Well there is the "The Transformers: The Movie" from 1986 that happens in the "distant year of 2005,haha!!
that small pot plant looking one you killed during the science hybrid section throws out weapons, including bombs
OMG FINALLY you guys are talking about this game :D
Always appreciate your work man , thanks a lot
Mike has really come into his own, on par with James. Love the close ups
I remember I had this as Probotector. Found it really tough, and eventually was able to skip levels via cartridge tilt. Only managed it a handful of times though.
Holy shit, Mike finally used something other than composite! REJOICE! :D
Oh wow thanks Mike! I've never seen this Contra, thanks!
So, based on what we find out in Contra: Shattered Soldier and the prequel Hard Corps Uprising, we can safely say Bahamut was like Big Boss from the Metal Gear series. He was a hero, but found out the truth on the Triumvirate, became a terrorist to overthrow them, but was labeled as a villain and we end up killing him based on false beliefs.
loving all the content lately!
Whoa Mike, awesome gameplay. I must have trained a lot to play Contra Hardcorps so well.
I have always liked Browny's shield weapon a lot;
defensive weapons are a great complement to the more standard offensive weapons.
do adventures of Batman & Robin on sega genesis
I've been thinking about doing that one! Hopefully soon! -Mike
VelvetSky1102 Another hard ass game for me to be enjoyable
Cinemassacre You and James should co op it for james and mike mondays
VelvetSky1102 fuck yes..bman & robin for sega rocks
do batman89 on genesis too. Nobody ever gives love to that game. People on yt always play the nes version.
