He got my grandfather stuck on the beach at Anzio and whole team (minus 2) killed at Monte Cassino. He was one of the first there and last to leave. My grandfather was one of the guys who said dont bomb the monastery and suffered when it was bombed. my grandfather got a some kind of a disciplinary thing at the end of the war because he yelled at him, I think he's slapped him but I could be wrong. Grama hinted at it but it was probably some kind of a threatening thing though. Years later they went back to Italy together and became good friends. I still have the .50cal slug from when he went to regroup and got shot at because they thought he was a german cause they heard everyone died. My grandfathers hair went white at 20 from shellshock. He said it was the bombs at Anzio that did it.

my dad was in us navy during the anzio beach head. the ships set off smoke so german planes could not spot them
