  • Let the battle begin! With this Manduka yoga mat review: I discuss the PRO vs. PROlite vs. eKO Superlite.
    I review each of these 3 mats' pros and cons, including all the considerations you need to think of before you invest in your next yoga mat. Most importantly: why you'd wanna get either the Manduka PRO, PROlite or eKO Superlite versus a cheap PVC mat.

      They don't call it the "Rolls Royce of mats" for nothing! Well at least back in the day that's what they used to call it... but that term hasn't stuck! I've been test-driving a bunch of their newer series mats... but I still come back to the good old PRO and PROlite. :)

      Thanks for your thoughts, Jessica! I'd love to go to Wanderlust one day too... :) I'm not sure the PRO will be good for pilates coz even though it's thicker, it doesn't have much bounce to it - which is what you'd really need for more pilates mat work. I mean, I guess it could work, but some might find it a little too hard still for pilates floor work.

      @@jaimetan Yes! I was trying to decide between a JadeYoga Travel Mat (3 mm thick) vs a JadeYoga Voyager (1.5 mm thick) for beginner weekly practice. I wanted something super light weight to carry to class... but you convinced me that if I get something too thin (such as 2 mm or less) then it will hurt my joints on the floor and won't be enough cushion. So I decided to get the heavier mat because of the extra cushion (3 mm and 3 pounds). I'm so happy with my decision and my joints will thank you! The Manduka brand looks amazing as well!

This is definitely one of the pro’s of any of the PRO series mats - that they’re really stable because there’s hardly any “bounce” to them (really good for standing/ balancing poses so you don’t wobble). The PRO like you have is definitely supportive though - it helps in long-held Yin poses like dragon - the back knee on the floor doesn’t get painful.
      I have all 4 mats you mentioned at home (my bf uses Jade), and my fave is the Pro! The Adapt is too squishy and noisy (I made a review about it), and I don’t like grip of the eKO. It’s all so personal at the end of the day… I’ve found in general the people who gravitate to liking the feel of the PRO mats don’t really like the feel of the eKO mats and vice versa.
      If the PRO really isn’t for you, what about selling it and getting another one of the others?

      I know what you mean! Ultimately you won’t go wrong with either mat. If you want a solid mat you can use/ abuse/ fold in half to put in a suitcase/ easily wash and soap down - Manduka PROlite is the way to go. If you do hot yoga or get sweaty then put a mat towel over it. If you’re not into towels, then Manduka GRP or Liforme are the way to go (but both of these aren’t as durable). Liforme’s grip and feel is great but it’s super expensive and not as durable... so if you don’t mind spending a load of money every few years on a new mat, you’ll like the Liforme (oh, you also can’t fold this in half in a suitcase). So... as long as you know what the cons are and know what you’re in for, then go for it! Both brands are great so you can’t go wrong 👍

    I just bought the Pro Lite because I love my Pro so much!
    Biggest difference which is important to note is the 2” inch smaller width. I got used to all the extra width of the Pro. I almost like the “give” without it being too squishy the Pro Lite has. Pro is firmer.
    If Manduka could make the Pro lite in 26 inch width that would be perfect.
    I ordered the EKO it was to rubbery for my hands.

      @@courtneyharrel5500 hey Courtney! Lovely to hear from you and thank you for sharing! How exciting you’ll have your PRO soon! I’m keen to hear how you like it over the PROlite... from listening to my students and followers it seems like in general people fall into 1 of 2 camps: the eKO vs. PRO material lovers. Eg. If they like the eKO material, they don’t like the PRO and vice versa, and I think it’s coz the grippy feel is quite different on both. (Case in point: I prefer the feel of the pro and actually don’t like the eKO!)
      I’ve used their mat sprays and they smell lovely! But over time it can become quite an expense, so another way of cleaning your mat can be making your own mat spray too 😜 (lots of TH-cam videos on that). Personally, I just use regular soap or shampoo on my PRO and PROlite mats in the shower. Probably not Manduka-recommended but I’ve been doing that for more than a decade now and the mats are still as good as new. 😬🤷🏻‍♀️

      You’re so welcome, Kristi! All the PRO series mats are made of the same material, so the PROlite is also closed cell (as is the PRO travel). So you’re good if you’re considering the PROlite too.
      It’s the eKO and GRP series mats that absorb water/ sweat - check out my other reviews of those other mats too! (But the PRO a series are still my fave) . Good luck with your decision and let me know what you end up getting! 🙌

    Thank you for sharing ❤️ I have been using manduka pro mat and manduka travel pro mat for about 2 years now and I have been loving it! I agree, it's easier to clean, heavy duty and definitely would last a lifetime! The only con I think is that, it doesn't have a good grip during hot yoga classes but could instantly be fixed if I will use a yoga towel on top of it.
    I was thinking of getting a lulu or a liforme yoga mat for an added grip during hot yoga, but always ended up not buying because I have seen reviews that it's hard to clean due to its open cell technology causing some sweat stains in the mat and it well wear out in 4 to 5 years in constant use. Any thoughts? Have you tried any of these? :)
    Thank you!

    • @jaimetan
      @jaimetan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you like the Pro and Pro travel! I really wanna check out the Pro travel mat, the thinnest one I have is the eKO superlite in this review! How do you like your Pro travel?
      And yes - you’re absolutely right about the lulu and liforme mats. I’ve practised on them before but I don’t get the hype. I don’t find them super grippy. I have the liforme pad - the tiny version of their yoga mat that’s meant for extra knee support, but I use it for handstand practice (so I don’t lug a huge mat with me to the gym just for handstands). And it’s perfect as a handstand mat for grip, but I don’t like the grip in down dog on the bigger mat. And yes, the lulu and liforme mats get scuffed and stained over time. It still weirds me out every time I spray my liforme pad and the wet patch appears inside the mat (is this the stain that will never leave?) 😂
      Manduka now makes a similar one called GRP Adapt which looks like a competitor to these mats too but I haven’t tried it (I also have my doubts about its durability).

    Hello Jaime, thanks for doing this really helpful review. Do you have any views on the Manduka Eko Lite mat? I recently got one, but somehow am not connecting to it as much as I am to a 2nd hand cheap mat that’s an OEM version of a manduka pro. I feel it’s less cushioned, so i do feel a little strain on the knees and it’s a little less comfortable when i go into headstands in my ashtanga practice. Also noticed that it’s not as easy to jump through (or rather slide through) and back too. That said, I’m not sure if it’s because I’m just not used to the mat. I am seriously considering switching to a prolite but it’s just rather heart aching considering i just got the eko lite mat!

    • @jaimetan
      @jaimetan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Amy! Happy new year! And yeah, I’m not a fan of the eKO lite for the very same reason. I used to have a daily Mysore practice and those jumpbacks and jump throughs would BURN... in the end I shredded through my eKO lite within a year. I didn’t like the texture/ feel of it at all too. You could use a mat towel over it - it’s easier to glide through with any mat you use, and will likely also help make it last longer. Buuuuut. If you don’t like the feel of it, that’s another story. Give yourself a timeframe eg. 1 month/ 2 months and if it’s still bugging you, then switch to PROlite? At the end of the day, if your mat is distracting you more than it’s supporting you in your practice, I don’t think it’s the right mat. But... give it a bit more time for you to get used to it first?

      Hey Vishal! Had a chat with someone in the product team at Manduka and it seems like if you’re preferring the grip of the Jade, then the grip of the Pro may not be the right mat for you... and instead their eKO series of mats might be what you prefer, since those are natural rubber and of a similar texture and feel to the Jade.
      Years ago I had an eKO lite mat and my boyfriend practices on a Jade mat... but to be honest I don’t enjoy the feel of either. 🤷🏻‍♀️ So this is when it comes down to personal preference of the feel and texture of mats. @@Sabibella Hey Sabi! Sorry to hear your PRO feels slippery. There's two things that could be happening: first is how you're gripping - are you gripping through all your finger tips? So you're not just applying pressure through the palm of your hands but also through all 10 finger tips AND press each knuckle down into the mat. That changes the grip for many. If this still doesn't work, perhaps a mat towel might be what you need - you can try with the smaller eQua hand towels from Manduka. @@Sabibella I don't find the pro to be slippery but my hands don't sweat much unless I'm in a heated class - in which case I opt for the Manduka eko or liforme mat. The hand towel sounds like a great idea, if you can't get along with these I think the eko or liforme are a good shout - although they aren't as durable it will be worth it to prevent slipping. In down dog also try to bring the weight back towards your legs and really engage the thighs, perhaps that will help. Good luck :)

      Hiya! Thanks for watching and commenting! The thing is, pain/comfort is so personal it’s hard for me to say. What works for me might not work for you and vice versa. It also depends on what kind of material your 6mm mat is made from. The PRO is about 6mm too but it is quite thick. I know some people who still need more cushioning on top of it but for the majority of people it’s enough.
      I also have a tiny, mini liforme mat I use specially for handstand training when I don’t need a big mat, although it was originally created for use as extra cushioning for sensitive joints… that might be easier for you since it’s a small mat? This one: geni.us/liforme-yoga-pad

      The 1mm is great as a travel mat - I often use it as a second skin on top of studio mats or even at the gym. Coz… the other mats are 2kg and above and if you’re trying to cutdown carry-on weight or luggage space, that helps. The 6 and 4mm ones might be what you like!

    Hey Jaimie, question!! Help pls gosh there are too many mat options out there haha. I'm practicing in Singapore - tropical country, gets pretty humid & I sweat quite a bit. I've been researching hardcore about mats cuz my old, beginner TPE mat is rly wearing out after ard 2 years of usage and I want to upgrade to a better one! I've watched ur other vids reveiwing the GRP series, which I was initially eyeing but I hear you about maintenanc, hygiene and lifespan so now I'm on the fence again. I'm wondering if the PROlite is grippy enough for sweaty hands? Also, you mentioned using a yoga towel above the PROlite/ PRO if you're sweaty, does that kinda make buying such an expensive mat pointless? Haha genuinely curious -- should I just invest in a manduka towel/ the eko superlite and lay it on my old TPE mat?

    • @jaimetan
      @jaimetan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello C! I’m a fellow Singaporean too! Haven’t lived there in a LONG time, but oh yes I know all about that 99% humidity 😵 I’ve practiced on my PROlite in Singapore/ India/ Thailand - all hot and humid places and it’s been fine! It’s not so much about the sweat but more about how naturally oily/greasy your fingers/ feet are. Beyond the grippiness of the PROlite, there’s also the texture/ feel of it. It’s super dense so you hardly feel the floor beneath you (more so with the PRO coz it’s thicker), but it really makes a difference to my practice coz it feels more supported. So even with a towel on it, there’s still that comfy, dense support beneath you that you don’t get with other mats. For towels - you could also just use the smaller eko hand towel to start with and see if you like it. I guess the question is: is your old TPE mat flaking? If it is, dump it. It’s not only unhygienic, but you’re also inhaling all that microscopic plastic! Even if you don’t invest in a Manduka mat next, you NEED a new mat! ❤️

    TY! Have you tried the Grp Adapt Mat that just came out from Manduka? For me, the Pro/Pro Lite were like skating rinks (a sentiment echoed by many users). I thought it was going to be the one. The salt scrub didn’t work to break down the film. I don’t have the patience to wear it in (Manduka, why not do it before it goes to the user). Not a towel gal. I ended up going Jade Harmony - perfect right out of the box. Made in the US of A. Open cell (one way to clean it is 3 parts water/one part vinegar - which works like a charm). The mat has grip like no other mat I’ve tried. Cons: yes, it does break down faster but I feel safe and stable. Because it’s so grippy, it’s hard to slide through in some poses. I wish it were a tad thicker (they do have a thicker version but too thick for me. I like the stability of the thinner mat). I only use black or navy so I don’t worry about colors (but they have lots of colors to choose from). Some find the mat a tad narrow and short (68 inches. It does come in longer sizes and many colors). I do Hatha and Vinyasa twice a day at home on a wood floor. I have wanted to check out the B Mat and Lifeforme. Right now, the Jade has my heart. P.S. In my humble opinion, I’d tone down the sales pitch at the end.

      Thanks for your comment! Glad you like the Jade mat and found your soul mat (lol). My guy uses the Jade mat too and loves it, but I don't like it coz it feels like I'm practicing on a giant sponge. I mean it's a firm sponge, but it's that weird spongy texture I'm not a fan of. It's the same reason I'm not such a fan of the Manduka eKO mats - they've got a similar spongey/ rubbery feel to the Jade. But I guess that's why there are so many different mat varieties to fit everyone's tastes. And no, haven't tried the Grp Adapt yet - it looks similar to the Liforme and Lulu mats which I'm also not such a fan of - they're supposed to be grippy but they scuff easily! @jaimetan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heya! I think the PROlite mat would be great - the regular sized mat is 4lbs, and they also do an extra long version that's 4.5lbs. You can check out the mat dimensions on Manduka's product site through my affiliate link: bit.ly/336iDJa This is the one I take to/ from the yoga studio and occasionally travel with if I have the luggage space (otherwise I take the travel version). The travel version of any of these mats are just too thin for regular practice and won't provide the cushioning you're looking for. The PROlite has the "just nice" factor of stable support and weight. Do note the cushioning on this is firm - there's not a lot of "bounce" or give on it but it still gives you the stable support you need (eg. knees still feel supported and 'cushioned' in kneeling poses - you're not going to feel the floor through this). I hope that makes sense! If you have a stockist near you, I'd suggest you check it out! in person to see if you like how it feels.
      They also do the eKO series of natural rubber mats which have a bit more "bounce" to them. I've found in general people who don't like the feel of the PRO mats have preferred the feel of the eKO and vice versa. Hope this helps!

    • @jaimetan
      @jaimetan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      YAY! And... yuuuuup... I've been folding it flat in fours to travel for years like this. The first few minutes after you take it out, the parts that got folded just need time to expand back (kinda like if you squeeze styrofoam packing material and release it, it springs back to shape.) But if I'm not traveling, I roll it up like a regular yoga mat. So it's only ever folded flat in a suitcase for like 4 - 30 hours, depending how long my journey takes. Then I unfold it and roll it up after taking it out of the suitcase.
      And when I roll it up, I first fold it in half and then roll it up (so that the underside of the mat where the floor's been doesn't touch the top part of the mat where I practice - I'm anal like that. haha) But because it's constantly folded in half then rolled up, there is a line halfway across the mat now - but considering I've been doing this for like... 10 years now, other than the line that's there there's no other wear and tear or bubbling up (like what happened to my Liforme only after trying the same thing once - check out my other Liforme review too).
      Disclaimer: folding it flat is in no way what's recommended by the manufacturer, so while it works for me - be careful with your new mat!
      ENJOY YOUR PROLITE! :))))

    I have a Pro for a year and a half and really like it except the down dog. My hands slip only in this pose, but my feet don’t 🤷‍♀️ I tried to adjust my pose, spreading fingers, putting more pressure on knuckles etc. but no. One of the teachers said recently that you should be able to fit an imaginary blueberry under your palm and not smash it. I don’t really get it, how can you put pressure on your fingers and not smash a blueberry at the same time?
    I also did salt treatment twice per manduka recommendation. My back and shoulders hurt a lot after practice and I suspect down dog is the reason. I was even thinking to switch to liforme because everyone in my studio including teachers love and praise it. I use a small towel on top of the mat to help with slipping, but still don’t feel secure in this pose and still feel it’s wrong. And I don’t sweat too much.

    • @jaimetan
      @jaimetan  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yup, the hand grip can be quite confounding and it takes constant refinement… and even advancing in handstands refined my handgrip for down dog. If you think of your finger tips and the edges of the palm (that’s under your knuckles as well as under your wrist) as suction cups, that’s what your teacher means with that imaginary blueberry - pressure is not from centre of the palm but you’re gripping from finger tips, pressing through knuckles, and base of wrist. And yes on top of that as you’re pressing down into the floor, you’re also using your shoulders. Different teachers teach this differently but whether you’re elevating or depressing shoulders, ultimately at the same time you’re pressing the hips up and away from you, in opposite direction of hands (as you press heels down with active thighs). So you’re not dumping all the weight into your hands and shoulders (which could possibly be causing your shoulder/ back pain).
      I mean… as you can see, there’s A LOT going on in down dog. Slipping on the mat is often not just coz of the mat but how the position is held - through the entire pose. It takes time and constant refinement til you get there.
      If you use a small yoga towel like the Manduka equa, you definitely need to spray it with water so you get grip from it, otherwise it’s just going to add to your slippery issue. These towels aren’t grippy unless they’re wet.
      Hope this helps! Keep going! And yup sometimes you might need to try another mat and see how you like it. I’ve also done a comparison between the liforme and Manduka (I find it too thin for my liking)… you can watch that review here: th-cam.com/video/WJw8245xT4c/w-d-xo.html

      @@jaimetan sweet! Question for you. I’m about about 5 11 tall 158lbs. Do you think Mandu Pro 71 size is enough for me to use at home? Thanks 😍

    • @jaimetan
      @jaimetan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ActionAndyTV I think it depends on what you're used to. Have you been using a regular yoga mat before this and did you find the length OK? If so, the standard length mat of the Manduka will be similar and should be fine! Also the other thing to think about is if you ever decide to go to live yoga classes at a studio, it's easier with a standard length mat especially in crowded classes. The longer mats can be awkward/ get in the way of other people's mats coz they're too long.

    i cant decide between the pro and prolite, any thoughts?? D: whats the main difference other than the thickness and price, and does the thickness affect performance?

    • @jaimetan
      @jaimetan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heya! The PRO’s thickness feels a bit more stable and supportive. Because it’s so much heavier, it literally just sticks to the ground and feels solid. The PROlite is thinner and hence lighter. Personally I don’t find this affects performance as it’s the same material so you get the same grip and traction. But if you do a lot of yin where you’re kneeling for a while or have sensitive knees, you may need to fold the PROlite over for a bit more comfort whereas it’s fine on the PRO. While I love the PRO, it’s not a mat I would lug around to a studio or go traveling with as it’s just too thick and heavy, so for me it’s only for home practice. I love the PROlite as my take-everywhere mat. Hope this helps!

      @@jaimetan ahh thank you so much for your detailed reply as well as this detailed video!!! i’m really conflicted because i don’t see myself bringing it around much, hence i should probably get the pro. but if the prolite works just as well maybe i should just save some money..?

    What color were the mats you used

    • @jaimetan
      @jaimetan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heya! On the PRO mat, it's the classic black colour. On the PROlite it's Midnight Blue. On the eKO Superlite it's also black (but I think they might call it charcoal). Hope this helps!

      That’s dedication, well done you! I find it too heavy to lug around. We bike everywhere in Amsterdam where I live, so every extra bit of weight on your back counts! But glad it works for you! 🙌

      Taking the pro by bike would be heavy. Mine stays in my car. I do have to walk a bit to get to the gym building. I have it in the Manduka carrier and consider it a “warm up”lugging it from the car to the gym.

    How do they do on carpet?

    • @jaimetan
      @jaimetan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Brandon! The issue with ANY mat on carpet is the carpet creates more space between the floor and the mat - which means it will be unstable, especially with standing/ balancing poses. You'll get that ankle-wobble. It might be better with a low-pile rug, but if it's a high-pile/ plush carpet, no mat is going to give you good stability on that. The PRO might be the best out of all of these since it's the heaviest/ thickest... but it really depends on how plush your carpet is. Also - it depends on the yoga style you practice. If it's Yin or restorative - then the carpet's actually great as a cushioning base under the mat - you don't need more stability with those yoga styles. If it's ashtanga or vinyasa you practice with a lot of standing and one-leg balancing poses, then a plush carpet is going to feel unstable under practically any mat! Hope this helps...
