I have been in love with opera for most of my life. But, NEVER, have I seen such a magical couple as Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon, as they draw out the very best in each other, the heart and emotion that can leave you smiling or crying. The very best in opera today. Thank you.
Oh my, Rolando and Anna are so young here...How time flys by. Still love watching these vids of these two from 12 year's or so ago....It will be a long time before we see an operatic partnership these two had.
SUPEEEEER !!! FANTASTIC BEAUTY !!! GOD bless You for the all this beauty !!! I listen , listen Your beautiful voices, Your beautiful performances endless !!! The pleasure is full !!! ENDLESS THANKS !!! Always with a lot of love and light N.Mirkova and friends from Bulgaria
Both of them had so much talent and they give the heart whenever they sing, orgullo mexicano Ronaldo, es de admirar todo el estudio y trabajo que tuvo que hacer para lograr tanto al igual que Anna
It is presumptuous to think that you know what Puccini "had in mind". I suspect that he would have been concerned primarily about expressing the relationship between them. He may or may not have had any particular staging in mind. If this is well portrayed, it is probably OK for the director to play around with the contextual details. I think they portrayed the spirit of what was intended very beautifully. Great performance!
I had stopped commenting because of backlash, but I saw these two and had to add to. They do play the part well. I can't say that I see the same things you ladies see, but if I were Rolando that close to such an woman, I would certainly be tempted. Throw in an incredibly romantic aria, and all is lost in the moment of time.
I think you're right, there's something going on between them, it may have just been within the moment but, the way she looks at him is pretty intense. It reminds me of how Stevie Nicks used to look at Lindsey Buckingham, during their best times. I think Netrebko and Villazon are perfect as this couple.
All judgments are subjective and, surely, if you believe that Bjorling and Tebaldi were better, then, for you they are better. But....Anna and Rolando captivate all us not only by their voices but also by their acting. In the past acting was less important than voice as far as I know history of opera. Surely, I have all these famous recordings but I do not listen them anymore because Rolando and Anna represent life in its very best moments. Nobody ever will surpass them in doing so.
Anna Luisa Chavez, Where did you get this video? iTunes? Is it a music video or a clip from a full-length film? I'd like to find where to buy it or at least this audio track. I've already watched this 5 or 6 times and sent a link to it to 5 of my friends. They do such a great job. Yes, I know he's not Pavarotti and she's still young in her career, but of all the versions of this scene I've seen and heard, this is the most believable and romantic (La Boheme's my favorite). I think Anna Netrebko is opera's "next big thing". Being only 35 I hope she attracts a much younger crowd to the opera theaters as we graying seniors won't be filling those seats 25 years from now.
Dear Vincent Paterson, I love opera and cinema is all my life!!! This is a choice to "make movie" with opera that I appreciate, even if not entirely successful, not for the valuable directing but especially for the editing choices! Considering some clumsy cuts that break the emotion of the visual narration, in my humble opinion, these are the editing points that I don't like: 01'01" - 01'18" - 02'12" - 02'16" - 02'28" - 02'39" - 03'10". Amazing ending!
Absolutely beautiful....until the final note. Puccini wrote the high-C for the soprano, not the tenor. So when the tenor must show off his high notes, this is what you get: two singers screaming instead of a moment of love, moonlight, and poetry. The tenors who ruin this moment should be smacked.
M Viktor Agreed. Her voice is much stronger (and more emotional). Their acting and the staging was quite good but a better balance of vocal power would have made this work better. I reference the Bjorling/de los Angeles performance as the best.
I hate to go in circles but , please, read what is being said above" All judgments are subjective". If this would not be correct we would always live in peace. Should we wage war just because my opinion is different from yours? Or your opinion you got just like Moses- straight from God?
Excuse me, but are we talking about movies or ope bestera?...Anyway in the past acting was very important infact , for example the great Caruso was a great actor and the best singer,Gigli was a big performer too ,Corelli was and handsome tenour with a big voice ,Tebaldi...Freni, the same Callas were all supreme singers and big performer....anyway you do well not to listen them, because if you do it as i do you will not consider modern tenours and sopranos because they are unfortunately inferior!
Please, do not mix up Gogol with Hegel and Babel with Bebel. I love CARUSO, I love Gigli, I love Corelli, I love Mario Del Monaco, I love Renata Tebaldi but, how Tebaldi can sing about love without being ever married ?! Corelli was considered as exceptional singer but very bad actor at the same time, Gigli was coming to the stage like a woman in a very high hills since he was too short, and so on and so forth. I am a dramatic tenor myself and my teacher was the great Paolo Silvieri..
rolando hasn't got a suitable voice for boheme and concerning anna...well she is a very nice girl but ....as soprano ....listen to jussi bjoerling and renata tebaldi or beniamino gigli and licia albanese or the best Caruso etcc etc....
Do you think that only who is married can understand love? This is ridiculous! absurd!Anyway you continue to talk about actors ...but i persist this is "Bel canto"not cinema!Comparing Tebaldi to that Russian singer is blasphemous! and forget Maria Callas that was on another planet as Caruso!the Leader! Ps:I'm so glad to talk with a tenour !

Magnifique !

They are very best in opera for all times. Nobody ever will surpass these two

Bravo, bravo, bravissimo
Maravillosos como siempre.

I don´t care what Puccini had in mind - this is beautiful!
...But not Transcendental. It brings me down to earth!
...As if to say: "I like sounds" - I'm ignorant and I'm proud of it" ?
Splendide
Thank you for this masterpiece!
bello proprio bello
She, so beautiful..him, so handsome...So romantic and lovely! SIGH!!
... !!!

Seductive!
Absolument!
I still say, these two were in love....His face, from 3:29 to 3:45, my woman's heart knows that look.
I do, too!!!

This it's extra footage from Manon's DVD. :)
It wasn't in the film, it was just a video clip for the aria.

Arkady, pienso igual!!!
Comparing Villazon -Netrebko to Raimondi -Freni for example in boheme is like comparing a Ferrari to a Smart!
Turner and Tallis. Who here is because of Atonement?

+Dave Glo Normally it's sung from the wings.
+Dave Glo Well, Rolando usually doesn't do that with Anna. They probably wanted to just do something different for this video presentation.
I can't hear any C's from Rolando
And yet I've seen video of Luciano Pavarotti singing the high c. Are you going to question The Great One's wisdom. Probably not!!
sounds kinda funny when Netrebko joins in with her enormous voice :D screams Rolando off the screen.

Totally kitschy, typical for Netrebko.
