Why Chinese People Always Drink Hot Water

  • Imagine yourself in China in the middle of July. The weather is boiling, and the only thing you can think about is a big glass of ice water. You ask for a drink at the nearest cafe and take a gulp. But the water’s so hot that it's burned your tongue!
Yep, in China, drinking water is served piping hot. What's more, locals have it with all their dishes, be it winter or stifling summer heat. The answer to this mystery lies in Chinese culture and history. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the human body consists of yin and yang elements. And you stay healthy only if your yin and yang are in balance. Okay, what is this all about?

    SUMMARY:
    - So, let's say your yang gets too strong. In this case, your internal temperature will rise, and you’re likely to get ill. That's why it's crucial to get rid of the extra yang (or, in other words, excess heat) in your body.
    - And however counterintuitive it may sound, the best way to do this is by drinking hot water, or other hot beverages.
    - Being able to drink hot water was kind of a privilege and was reserved for the elderly, the sick, and pregnant women.
    - Another reason for drinking hot water during meals is that it's supposed to improve digestion and soothe the digestive tract.
    - Soccer appeared nowhere else but in China about 2,200 years ago! Or at least it was the game that later transformed into the soccer we know today.
    - With an area of more than 3.7 million square miles, China is a huge country.
    - China is the country with the largest population on the planet. More than 1.4 billion people live there!
    - The first day of the year in China falls on the new moon, which usually happens between January 21 and February 20.
    - Fortune cookies weren’t invented in China! They began in San Francisco, and nowadays, more than 3 billion fortune cookies are produced every year.
    - China is the country of railroads. Imagine this: if you combined all the Chinese railroad tracks, you’d be able to wrap them around the Earth two times!
    - Table tennis, or Ping-pong, is China's national sport, and the Chinese are really good at it!
    - Number 8 is a lucky number in China. The reason for this may lie in the fact that in Chinese, the word "prosperity" sounds like the word "eight."
    - China is also the home of the world-famous Terracotta Army, which consists of approximately 8,000 clay soldiers who were supposed to guard the Emperor's tomb in Xi'an.
    - You have to thank the Chinese for inventing toilet paper! But at first, it wasn't just for anybody - only the emperor could use it.
    - One of the main reasons for different unexpected food combinations is that traditional Chinese medicine claims that all the tastes must be balanced.
    - China has its own version of Bigfoot. Its name is Yeren, which means "wild man," and it supposedly lives somewhere in the mountains of the Hubei Province, which is covered in dense forests.
    - The most popular hobby in China is collecting stamps. What's more, it's seen as a status symbol!

I'm Chinese (not from mainland), I don't drink warm water unless it's winter. When I went to China to visit my relatives, they encouraged me to drink hot water even on hot summer days, it's very strange for me at first, then I figured out it's traditional Chinese medicine to improve health and digestion

I cannot tell you the amount of weight i am losing just by switching to hot. When i use to live in china as an expat I couldn’t understand why they drink hot water. Eventually they told me “because consuming cold things is bad for you.” So i started drinking hot water and without exercise or healthy eating i began losing weight like craycray

Drinking hot water and avoid eating ice cream, cold food and cold drinks, juice and most of veggies (except mushrooms and olives helped in the past, now these veggies don't help, but eating Thai basils with food like scrambled eggs and pho helps much more ) help reducing and lightening my heavy period by a lot.

I live in China and I can tell you they DO drink a lot of hot water. No matter hot or cold day it is... they also recommend it as a treat if you feel bad or uncomfortable in any way. They Do drink hot water with any meal and between them. In restaurants they always offer it before a meal (sometimes with lemon) and even if you just enter someone’s house they’ll offer hot water to you, too. In that hot water that they drink Chinese people put different fruit or berries and it’s give that tea some good benefits.

Makes sense to me. Your body always tries to keep a constant temperature, which is around 37C. When you introduce cold water, the body would need to convert stored fuel in your body into heat, which in same ways waking your body up for a bit to do that.

Been there many times, my wife is Chinese, she never drinks ice water. However there is another reason even more important that they drink hot water. Ever go there and pour water from the tap? You can actually see things moving around. Boiling the water kills the germs, then they poor into thermos. They are also huge tea drinkers and you need hot water for tea. Another interesting thing is they drink hot water from a glass not a cup.

As a Chinese myself I really appreciate this video! Just one small correction: usually people from North part of China have soup at the end of meal. People from the south have soup at the very beginning of the meal. Because not only do they consider soup as the most nutrient part of the meal, but they also think it will prevent people from overeating, which I personally believe it make lots of sense ( spoil alert: I am from the north. :p)

There is another reason here! The tap water in China is not drinkable so we always boil the water before we dink it. Normally, I cannot wait for the water to cool down to room temperature so I just drink it when it is hot. Gradually I get use to dink hot water and cannot resist from drinking hot water.

Nowadays i prefer drinking my water warm... not boiling hot but around 45-50 degrees C warm. It’s a mix of hot and cold. My teeth are sensitive to cold so it’s more comfortable for me. Also i make the water slightly acidic with lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, before and after a meal this also helps my digestion. Drink it with a straw as the acidity could eat your teeth enamel.
