    Back in 1986, I was waiting to get into the Alcopolco Bar along with many others (Payton owned this night spot located in Elk Grove Villiage, IL) when several people started yelling "Walter." I then turned to my left and Walter Payton was standing right there, next to me. I then stuck my hand out and Walter Payton shook it. He squeezed my hand so hard it hurt for a week, but that wonderful memory of a Chicago sport's legend will last forever. R.I.P. Walter

    The part where his team was mobbing and he was jumping around at 10:50 was because he broke the all-time rushing record of Jim Brown in that game. He was the all-time leading rusher for just about 20 years. Also, he was a sweet person, his kindness to everyone is why the Man of the Year Award regarding humanitarian efforts by an NFL player was renamed for him after his death.
    And finally yeah, the entire city, his team, coaches, family....heck the entire fanbase of the NFL loved him. Even Packers fans, the team's archrival respected him and loved him in their own way.
    In my opinion he is the greatest player to ever play. He could pass like a quarterback, catch like a receiver, one of the best rushers to play running back, blocked as well as linemen, punted the ball 40 yards, could kick field goals and led the league in return yards when he brought back kickoffs. Complete player. Sure he could tackle too.

    They called him Sweetness because he played a violent and brutal sport but HE MADE EVERYTHING LOOK "SWEEEET" WHILE HE WAS DOIN IT!" The way he would move, the way he would high step and point his toes while he was running, was like watching a dancer playing football. But that's exactly right because most people don't know that WALTER PAYTON WAS ACTUALLY A SOUL TRAIN DANCER WHEN HE WAS YOUNGER hahaha!!!! (look up Walter Payton on Soul Train.) That's kinda the reason why he looked so sweet on the football field. But the reason why he is so great is because of something totally different - BECAUSE OF HIS WILL! It was like he would rather die than let you stop him. He would go around you, go over you, go under you, go through you, it just didn't matter. You would have to kill him to stop him. He didn't care how big, strong, or fast you were - He never stopped, he never gave up, he never quit, he was never scared. Me and my brothers all ended up playing professional sports (football and baseball) and no matter what we did, no matter what sport we played, no matter position we were playing- WE TRIED TO DO IT LIKE WALTER PAYTON WOULD DO IT. He was our example. He showed us how to get it done, and just like Walter Payton did it - WE GONNA MAKE IT LOOK SWEEEEEET WHILE WE DOING IT hahahaha.

    Watching this did my heart a world of good. In early 1985, my suburban Chicago high school had a Fellowship of Christian Athletes basketball game in which Walter Payton participated in. I was a really skinny 17 year old black kid, amongst a sea of predominately whites in the audience. I was fortunate enough to sit behind the pro athletes' bench. Seeing Payton in person, the thing that really struck me was he wasn't tall but he was more muscular than anyone I'd ever seen before. During the course of the basketball game, he'd dunked a few times which amazed me. The greatest memory for me that night, however, was whenever he came out of the game for a rest he pointedly turned to converse with me. He asked me how long I'd lived in that community, what I liked to do, what plans I'd had for my future, etc. I was blown away. The following Monday at school, all day my classmates wanted to know what Payton was talking to me about. Later that year, the Chicago Bears dominated the NFL, eventually winning the Super Bowl. That whole year was magical for me!

As far as a football player though, ask any Linebacker or Safety of the 70s or 80s, they'll tell you; he was anything but sweet. He was a mean NASTY man out there; he beat up defenses all by himself. He never ran out of bounds or took a play off. He lowered the shoulder every chance he got and he took on anybody, 185lb CB or 320lb NT, it didn't matter. Allure watch Pure Payton it will give you a better understanding as to why Walter was so special. Also most running backs careers last 4-5 years Walter played 13 and only missed one game. Walter is the G.O.A.T. I idolized him as a kid and cried when he passed.

    There is a reason they start the highlight film with off the field stuff. This guy was an amazing human being and the nickname “sweetness” applied to both the beautiful guy he was off the field and the beautiful athlete he was on the field.

    Allure, you've just watched the greatest football player of all time. And yes, he enjoyed the contact. He always delivered the blow, which is why he was never hurt. He missed only 1 game in his career, a game early in his career he could've played in. He ran with power, speed, and elusiveness, he could punt, place kick, block, tackle, played QB one game, long snap, return kicks and punts, and receive. Most of his career he was the only offense, everybody knew he was touching the ball 30-40 times. Also, he took ticket sales over the phone (as a way to prank people. He was a big prankster). He was a member of the Bears Board of Directors. As a player, he would sign a blank contract, and the team would fill in the amount later. The team and the city still look out for his family. They both are t.v. personalities. And "Sweetness" was what he called himself early in his career, meaning, his game was sweet.

    Little known fact: Payton retired as the Bears all time leader in receptions (492), a record that still stands to this day. For his whole career, Payton was basically Chicago's entire offense, because they never had a dominant receiver or quarterback the whole time.

    Walter Payton was loved by everyone. He was a pure and genuine nice guy who respected his opponents and team mates alike. He was pure talent, determination and speed on the field with an ability to see the field and how other players would react to what he would do and his stutter step helped him control their reactions to great effect throughout his career. He was only a couple of inched taller than Barry Sanders, but he had more speed and power. I remember they listed his body fat percentage one time during his career and during the season he only had 5% to 7% body fat. That was one of the things that lead to his early death because he unknowingly punished his body by not having enough body fat to properly sustain him during a season. You need a certain percentage to remain healthy and he was actually too low and unhealthy by the end of each season.
    The NFL has their man of the year award named after Walter Payton and presents it to the one player who gives back the most to his community with charitable work and programs and it is probably the most sought after award each season. It embodies who he was as a man and the impact he still has today on the game and the league.

    • @MrRingai
      @MrRingai 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      he was a beast but no where near as fast as Sanders, one of the reasons he was more combative and direct. Also highly unlikely he was stronger, Sanders squatted more than his linemen and his "NFL combine" consisted of stepping out of class and benching 21 reps in his dress shirt without warm up.
