I used to be a good chipper, but I don't play much anymore. Been really strugling with my chipping. I used this drill in my living room and it worked great, Thanks
I like how you actually knocked it in the bucket after explaining how to use your hips... Unlike Butch Harmon, who talks, hits a shot, then it cuts to a camera showing a ball rolling up next to the hole. And then when it cuts back to him again, he says something like "and that's how you use the bounce on your sandwedge." (Only now there are three massive divots on the ground, when there were none there before he hit the shot lol.)
Great video Andy, my problem is trying to help ball up by falling away from the target, a v common issue I think, hit a few balls in the garden with the swing thought of turning hips and got a lovely contact and ball flight so will now need to transfer the skill onto the course, many thanks Martin
I would recommend that in the finish position your hips would rotate 90 degrees in a full swing. So this would be slightly more than a chipping action where the hips would rotate around 75 degrees. This drill is good for chipping actions as amateur golfers do not rotate their lower body enough.
This is similar to the technique that the great Bobby Jones used to use. "Connecting" his hands to his right hip. As compared to the "putting" like motion you first describe used by Paul Runyon. Short game is everything ✌️
Connection is everything in short game. If you can control the movement of the club with the bigger muscles then you should produce a more consistent action. 👍
Been struggling with this. I use my hips in my practice swings and bottom-out perfect, then get over the ball and lock my lower body and end up hitting the ground or blading it.
Hi Mike, sounds like you are able to perform the action correctly but you don’t trust it in the real swing. I would advise some practice under pressure. You can try this by just using 1 ball on the practice chipping green and chipping from multiple different locations. This will replicate the on course pressure of “1 chance” and should help your chipping.
This video is about the chip shot. The video is highlighting the importance of opening up and facing the target even on small shots. I see many amateurs struggle with there short game because the lower body is too static meaning the arms/hands take over and they loose the strike.
@@shakespeargolf Personally I don't see much difference between the two; I focus on right hip turning through and keeping my chest down body posture on each. With both I am going up/down club on length of shot, ball position forward/back for high or low.
I’ve never used my lower body when chipping. I am also a very inconsistent chipper...the strange thing is that I thought that using my lower body would make me inconsistent. So, based on this video, I’ll be working on incorporating my lower body into my chipping! Thank you sir!
Hi Mark. Yes pitching requires a lot of hip rotation as well. With the pitching action the arm swing will be longer with additional wrist hinge. Check out my 40 yard pitch video for more details.
Good one Andy I was skinnying, yipping, chunking trying everything. Your tip works like magic.
You Just hit the tip of a lifetime for me my friend . That really works. Much thanks from soggy Oregon in January 2021
Glad I can help from a very soggy England.

Glad the drill helped Dale. Hope you can take it to the course.

Thanks Nick, it’s not often it goes so perfectly on the demo.
REALLY GOOD, THANK YOU

@@shakespeargolf - Thanks will give that a shot
Chip or pitch? There is a huge difference and appropriate upper and lower body action. One independent, the other working together and connected.

I see this mistake quite often with people I coach. Best of luck with the changes. Thanks for the comment. Andy
What about pitching Andy is that similar but just extending the swing
