- The Les Humphries Singers were an international vocal group led by Englishman Les Humpries (10 August 1940 - 26 december 2007) who lived and worked in Hamburg, Germany, where he formed his group in the 1970’s.
'Mexico' was their second biggest hit in the Netherlands reaching #2 in the Dutch Top 40 in the fall of 1972.

World famous music artists performed on TopPop: ABBA, 10CC, Bee Gees, The Jacksons, David Bowie, Earth & Fire, Boney M, Smokie, KC & The Sunshine Band, Chic, Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, and many many more.

This "1840" version was actually the one that got airplay in 1972, in central Germany at least. The lyrics are a lot clearer and coherent than the "1580" version.
Les Humphries really outdid himself as far as the ethnic groups were concerned. They singers were from America, Germany, Africa, UK (Les Humphries)....in a certain way, the group was ahead of its time....and one tends to forget how POPULAR they were in EUROPE.

В 70-х была гибкая голубенькая пластинка. На ней Мексико и ещё из их репертуара две песни. Но я тогда не знал название исполнителей.

You get the distinct impression that some of the "performers" were hired to look cool on TV and didnt actually sing on the record. But i loved it as a kid :)
You're right, they actually said that in an interview ("No, she don't need to sing, we just need her hair color - so please bring your friend.")
Meanwhile proven: Chris Yim (the Asian with the long hair) was on stage all the time and never sang a note for he could not sing.
The melody is actually from the song The Battle of New Orleans written by the country singer Jim Driftwood, but I have to say that this version is more swinging and likable.

It was the Pop-Version of "Battle of New-Orleans"...There were some protestes in England because of the lyrics and may be a lawsuit with the owner of the copyrights, so the changed the lyrics...
