Aged 74, '22 diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, my appetite started taking a nose dive. Very soon thereafter, my body began craving nuts and dried raisins and apricots which I 'trickle feed' on throughout the day, along with fresh fruit, veggie smoothies. Dairy, has been cut from how I used to eat, my body seemed to be rejecting it and once I understood why, (all inflammations I once had, disappeared. My chemo treatment response so far, is very good resulting in significant reduction in the cancer, helped too by what my body is telling me to consume. Thank you so very much for as I listened, I felt a surge of Serotonin fill me as I smiled to that I'd heard, that too being beneficial to reducing cancer.

It's a topic that deserves more attention, given the risks associated with improper harvesting, storage, and processing.
While peanuts are a nutritious food, it's wise to be cautious. I'd recommend avoiding peanuts from countries known for less stringent food safety standards, such as China and India.
For a safer option, look out for high oleic peanuts sourced from countries with robust food safety regulations, like Argentina, the USA, and Australia. These varieties often have a higher nutritional profile and a reduced risk of contamination.

Yes, the skin also contains the toxins. I believe all these studies are FFQ so of poor quality and no conclusions should be drawn. Are nuts typically eaten by healthy people, or trying to be healthy? Those eating fast food and processed foods are less likely to eat nuts- probably eat chocolates/candies instead of nuts. My understanding is that the Harvard School of Public Health is mainly promoting processed foods such as seed oils and plant based foods for profit. No scientist considers these epidemiological studies as scientific. We need RCT studies to determine if causal. These are basically advertisements.

Valencia peanuts are mostly grown in New Mexico and because the climate is dry and they are grown in bushes above ground, they are less susceptible to aflatoxin. However, mold can grow on any peanut that is not stored properly or when exposed to moisture. In general, almonds and hazelnuts have been found to have lower levels of aflatoxins compared to peanuts, pistachios, and walnuts. As a side note: Kirkland (Costco) Organic Creamy Peanut Butter is made with 100% U Valencia peanuts

I am so happy to hear about the studies on nuts! I ‘accidentally’ had this video start after watching something else on health - I am so very glad I didn’t turn it off. I am personally really interested in this having had colon cancer 13 years ago and breast cancer in 2015 with recurrence in 2018. The second lot of breast cancer in ‘18 , my sister had it in both breasts at the same time as me, a week apart in surgery with the same surgeon at Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge UK ! My awareness has been SO raised in watching this video that I am going to watch it again and make notes. I have also really taken on board the red flags about over consumption and the importance of eating the red skin inside the shell of the peanuts. HUGE GRATITUDE TO YOU! 🙏🏼✨

That is very informative. But I do have one concern. The problem is that several of the studies that you cited discuss relative risk reduction. That can be almost meaningless unless you compare it to absolute risk reduction. For example if 8 people die in the tested group and 10 people die in the control group there would be a relative risk reduction of 20%. But if you have a 1000 people in each group the absolute risk reduction is really quite tiny. The absolute risk reduction would be only 0.2%.

In the Mediterranean Diet and Invasive Breast Cancer Risk Among Women at High Cardiovascular Risk in the PREDIMED Trial:
„ After a median follow-up of 4.8 years, we identified 35 confirmed incident cases of breast cancer.
Observed rates (per 1000 person-years) were 1.1 for the Mediterranean diet with extra-virgin olive oil group, 1.8 for the Mediterranean diet with nuts group, and 2.9 for the control group.
These results come from a secondary analysis of a previous trial and are based on few incident cases and, therefore, need to be confirmed in longer-term and larger studies.”

Very nice podcast. I just finished listening to it. I have eaten nuts for many many years. Mainly almonds and walnuts, but I enjoy all types, with peanuts included. For about a year I have been earnestly trying to lower my A1C. While walking between 10K and 15K steps a day, all of a sudden one day I couldn't walk more than a 1/4 mile and ended up visiting with a cardiologist. And just this past month I visited with the osteoporosis doctor due to my osteoporosis. In reviewing the paperwork the osteoporosis doctor gave me with the suggested foods to include in my diet, almonds was one of them. If this were true, then I should not have any bone issues. Considering all of the studies that have been done, I should truly be at the top of the list of optimal health and yet I am having difficulty with many of the issues that you said I would benefit from eating the nuts. I actually do feel good the majority of the time, however, despite being careful with my diet, test results show high blood sugar, osteoporosis and cardio issues.

I already consume healthy nuts in cooking, but we need a well balanced diet...and I am doing that as a mother and grandmother. Thank you.

I just want to ask if the nutritional properties will be lost once the nuts are cooked as in roasted or baked?
Also want to thank you both for the work you’re doing. 😊

The problem is with the roasting. They almost always roast nuts in inflammatory, omega 6 seed oils that are highly processed, oxidized and susceptible to linking up with healthy tissue due to their polyunsaturated state. Raw nuts are extremely healthy. Think about it like a salad which is also extraordinarily healthy. It's the salad dressing that's the killer. I have 6 stents in my heart requiring one stent a year for 6 years. I was eating Plantars' canned nuts daily and they're loaded with peanut oils, cottonseed oils, canola oils and other inflammatory oils and they were killing me. Got rid of processed protein bars with those same oils as well and it's been four years and no need for another stent. Look up the dangers of seed oils in the BMJ, British Medical Journal's findings. American universities and journals will tell you they're just fine and dandy, but then you discover much of their research funding is coming from the corporations that sell those rancid oils. It's conflict of interest.

Peanuts are legumes grown in the ground. Nuts grown on a tree are the real nuts. I don’t eat peanuts unless they’re Organic.

I’ve a question about the olive oil study: we’re they eating the olive oil raw or cooking with it or both? Thank you! Also, I truly appreciate the summary tip: eat a handful of nuts each day. Excellent. Thanks.

Don’t cook the EVOO past its smoke point (dribble some uncooked EVOO on later)

Thank you very much for the great clarification about eating the nuts with proofs of international papers.. we in Tamil Nadu, in India have been eating raw peanuts immediately after the harvest which is very tasty with a sweet taste. If we over eat it whether raw or boiled, we will eat some jaggery along with it which will compensate the bad effects of eating peanuts and this has been helpful so long now. I would like a review on this . That’s why peanut candy is always made with jaggery and sold in India

Thanks for this most interesting talk. I have a question about roasting - you said that it is recommended to roast nuts in general or specifically peanuts. Wouldn't roasting damage the anti-oxidant properties of the peanuts? I would assume the anti-oxidant effect it due to some organic compound that in the peanut which the roasting may destroy. I couldn't find a reference to this issue in the research paper.

I agree 👍 that's why I soak my nuts then dehydrate by roasting very slowly (12 hours) at a low heat (60 deg C)
