I loved this conversation. I'm 61 and my wife is 57 and we are very close to retiring. I'm all in on moving out of the US but my wife wants to be near our son and daughter in-law. They just got married so my wife is sure there is going to be a grandchild coming. I agree with Doug that with air travel and technology a relationship is still possible. On another note, the violence/crime issue is a real problem here in the US no matter where you live. The US just surpassed 600 mass shootings. Not 600 shootings, 600 MASS shootings. That was yesterday so we're probably beyond that today. The idea of moving to such a safe place is very alluring. Anyway, thanks for the video and maybe my wife and I will see you there some day.

We are subscribed to both channels, and was thrilled to see this video. It's not as easy as it may sound to some, but it's certainly doable. Having some travel experience would be a benefit as was stated, but seriously, why not? It's ALL there.

I finally got to watch this in its entirety without interruption; Doug made everything sound so easy & I suspect that Madeira holds the fountain of youth because anyone appearing in your videos looks much younger than they should do (or is it your magical camera work if not Oil of Olay applied during make up?)!

All sensible and intelligent advise - most especially being financially savvy, and ignoring all those ' toys ' as mentioned, that one really doesn`t need !! My wife and I retired from our Oxford academic careers to a safe, secure part of the world, and after expensive Oxford, were able to afford and build a new house on six acres of land, within a beautiful rural landscape - one could only imagine being able to afford that in Oxford !!!!!!!
However, it is also being aware, and accepting that one leaves behind certain aspects of the UK - the history for example, that will be missed - but flight times Madeira to the UK would not be so onerous, to make frequent trips as required :)
Bottom line though is - understand your finances, and have control of your finances - everything else will follow !!!!!!

A pleasure as always to wake up to a message from you our pen pal! Interesting to hear your thoughts on life changing decisions and the experience of you and your wife being retired from your Oxford academic careers. Being able to afford to build a new house on six acres of land, within a beautiful rural landscape is no small thing. But yes I've heard many people echo your words in saying that the history and culture can be very missed. As you say the flight times from Madeira to the UK are quite manageable being only around 3 1/2 hours. We do consider it, but at the mo' we are happy to spend a few months there at a time, which is just as well with Brexit!
@@LivingWalks Hello, and so nice to hear from you too :) People do ( too often ) make terrible decisions before obtaining all the relevant and important information to moving overseas for an improved retirement - a case of the ' rose tinted glasses ' which can have unforeseen and disappointing consequences - not the least being the financial hit !!!!!

I would consider that such a major decision always incorporates that important dimension of balance, recognizing that whilst one makes desirable gains, there are always going to be those elements which must be inevitably, and often sadly left behind, to a greater or lesser degree. For my wife and I, and only because we fortunately had sufficient funds, we were able to make regular return trips ( flight times - 38 hours, bearable flying
business class ) which allowed me to continue my academic career, admittedly at a somewhat reduced level.
So, on balance, for us it all went well, although, perhaps in retrospect a place not so distant may have proved slightly more desirable. :)
Hi there @@MrTorleon, yes indeed the dimension of balance, can be applied to perhaps everything. I'm sure that being able to make regular return trips home to continue your academic career must have helped somewhat.

I'm turning 60 in less than 2 months. For me, life starts at 60. There are many new things I will tackle in my 60th year. Heaven forbids I ever talk about 'retirement'. I will never do such a thing. Hopefully, our Creator will allow me to live to 120. So, I'm only halfway through...

I’m pretty safe with retirement age. I’m from poor f… up country in Europe. Average living age is couple years before pension kick in. If you was working all life and survived till pension you will gonna die in next couple of years. That’s how we call pensions ages here. Usually people in pension can’t afford food and medicine and are waiting in bed the lucky day to die. Sounds sad, but it’s true.
Hello Home Office, how very saddening to hear this. I'm sure this is why people such as Doug consider themselves very fortunate. I know too a lot of people are having to relocate if they are able to, because they cannot afford the health care in there own country. My thoughts go out to you friend.
