    Joan is only a legend in that she has held her title of national coach for decades yet produced disappointing results on the international stage for just as long. There are a lot of great archers in Canada who are denied the chance to represent Canada simply because they dont train under Joan.
    Crispin is a good archer because of the time and support he had received from this father. Good luck old buddy.
    The truth is Canada as never won a single medal in Archery at the Olympics. As long as Joan is around and in charge this is unlikely to change.

    Showcasing our Canadian Olympic archery team is awesome! Good luck to them in Rio. :)
    That said there are a couple of things that bugged me in the vid... like letting Rick draw a 47 lbs bow (meaning that's a heavy poundage for an inexperienced archer). And letting him draw it without finger protection on top of that. Neither are safe. Please don't injure Rick, he's a Canadian treasure!

    Oh, Rick, what would we do without you, there are no superlatives to describe your prowess in so many "domains" as we say in French. 🤔😄🍷

    would anyone know why the let the bow swing down after a shot?

    • @JeremyFinlay
      @JeremyFinlay 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +KawaRyuu788 it's just a follow-through motion. They wear a strap around their wrist to keep from dropping it, as they don't grip the bow. The reason for this is while aiming, and during the release of the arrow, if you're gripping the bow, it's very easy to affect the flight of the arrow with tiny hand movements...
      So basically, if you don't grip the bow, and just let the tension of the string hold the bow against your hand, your hand won't impact the flight of the arrow.
      This is primarily a competition thing, most traditional archers (non-compound) would have a reflex to catch the bow before it falls, or have just their thumb and forefinger holding the bow.

    haha awesome! I've tried archery a couple of times. I have the arm strength but not the aim.

    Who's Canadian

  • @JeremyFinlay

    Any target closer that 30 or 40 yards is easy when your bow is equipped with a sight. Even Mercer was able to hit close to the target at 70, and he's probably never shot a bow before. That's why they shoot at 70, if you watch the competitions, they're shooting at a pie plate sized target. At that distance, I could barely see the target, let alone the individual rings.
    Personally, I see the real fun (and challenge) is shooting instinctively. That's no arrow rest, and no sights of any kind. It's a very similar concept to throwing a ball at a target, you don't have a sight, or aiming assistance when throwing a ball, yet, baseball pitchers have high precision.
    Oh, and don't forget darts! That's instinctive too.

      +Jeremy Finlay Sorry but you're wrong. The vast majority of beginners struggle to even hit 40yds let alone achieve any decent group. It looks very easy when you look at more experienced archers but it is only made easy due to the hundreds of hours of practice and arrows shot. Similarly watching archery at the olympics it seems dead simple to group in the gold at 70m, but trust me it's anything but simple. It's not the gismos that achieve the results, it's the training.
      Also why is it that so many of you "instinctive" shooters feel the need to preach how fun and challenge it is to shoot instinctively and how all the aids just make things easy? Why can you not just enjoy your chosen archery discipline and respect that others have different preferences/motivation?

      not at all, we start them out at 10m until they can hit that consistently.

    • @shawnwells5719
      @shawnwells5719 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Get real. The arrow speed from a recurve bow is so slow that any variation in the finger release will cause inches of vertical dispersion at even twenty yards. It takes years of consistent practice to x ring at nearly eighty yards, even with the equipment these guys are using. The arrow drop is measured in feet over that distance.

    Rick, that was nice. But thats, not how you talk to a archery coach. They get really easyly upset. Its a huge honor, to even speak with olympic coach. If you are struggleing to pull a bow, then its natural from coach to correkt your form.

    ping pong ball at 8 meters isn't very impressive, i used to shoot dimes off of a rotating wire setup at 20 and were fairly consistent, but that was sighted compound bows, which are a different story.

      Isn't that 18m (60 ft) mark? It appears to be the same distance as Ricks board.

    • @shawnwells5719
      @shawnwells5719 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You keyboard critics slay me. Get out there with a recurve bow and show me what you can hit with a finger release. Most of you compound cowboys can't hit anything without 80% letoff, a mechanical release, and precision sights at a measured distance.
