I am relearning the flute on my own as an adult (I played a couple years in high school). I have the Trevor wye part one beginner book. I just got to page 19 where there is mention of "staccato". I didn't realise that I had been playing the notes staccato all along when I should have been playing legato. I just learned this term "legato" from your video. Thank you for a very informative video. You have a lovely, gentle style of teaching and your students are lucky to have you!

Erin - thanks. I tried this. No - not on Kohler. I used Disney's Be Our Guest - more within my ability!! I did notice that I immediately went back to old bad habit way when switching to staccato from Ha Ha Ha breathing. There is definitely some vigilance and concentration needed, but for sure a better staccato is the result. Thank you!

    Found this very helpful!
In regards to staccato and legato, I struggle with getting my fingers to go fast enough.... what would you recommend to help with the fast movements? :)

Hi! A lot of times fingers are "stuck" going too slowly because there's a lot of tension in your hands, arms, and fingers. Start by making sure your entire body is as relaxed as possible when picking up the flute and putting it to your face. Notice extra tension in your neck and shoulders and see if you can release it. Then slowly play long tones making sure each finger change is as relaxed as possible. Any extra tension when you're playing slowly will be magnified when trying to go faster. Good luck!
