    It is devilishly hard to pull off this song on a guitar sans TT. Just when you make it through the intro, looming ahead is that low pitch breakdown. 5150 should’ve launched Steinberger into orbit, but it wasn’t enough. Hopefully a full featured clone will appear someday, perhaps affordable. Stellar playing as always, Sir.

      True...I kick myself, I used to have a Trans Trem Steinberger (the full bodied, "strat style" one. Never should've sold it. Those things are worth a fortune these days. I've got one of the Hohner copies - it's really nice, but it's only got the S-Trem. I've looked everywhere for a "reasonably priced trans trem for it, to do a retrofit. If you can find one, they're typically well over $1,000 just for the trem.

    That was awesome. You should do highly technical videos where you completely break down EVH tone on different records. Then practice for years so you can duplicate some of Eddie's hardest licks effortlessly. Then post the videos on YT. Once you've done that, you should do a 2.5 hr long podcast with Dave Friedman and further breakdown the finest details of Amp builds.
    Oh wait.....you've already been there.....done that.

    The tone is so amazing. Love your content. Question for you sir. I've read Eddie played this on the Steinberger that had the ability to shift the entire string set tuning. I don't remember if it's up or down or whole step or half. Interesting stuff! Funny, when I listen to the song it's hard to catch that. Any chance you can go further into this?

    • @donkarnage6032
      @donkarnage6032 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Basically how the Steinberger trans-trem worked is the tremolo could go up and down in small increments like putting a capo on the strings. In the case of Summer Nights it shifts from standard up three frets or E>G. What made the Steinberger tremolo unique is that unlike other tremolo devices(Floyd Rose/Kahler/Fender) when pulling the bar up or down it could keep the strings in tune with the ability to lock in place. Although this was an amazing technology the tremolo itself was finicky and could be knocked out of place quite easily which lead Eddie to stop using the guitar.

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey jtnachos! So, Don pretty much answered how the trans-trem works / worked. They're very hard to find these days, and super pricey. I used to have one when they first came out. Never should've sold that guitar...but that's another story.
      As Don describes below, the trans-trem would actually transpose the tuning of the guitar. It had this elaborate setup with the bridge saddle height adjustment behind the actual saddle that would set the string height. Once you got it setup correctly (and that wasn't easy), the strings would all dive, or climb completely in tune. So it could give you a slide effect on full chords (Ed used it on "Get Up" and that's what the main riff of that song is). There was also a locking "cam" at the base of the tremolo arm, that you could lock in your tuning, therefore transposing the entire key of the guitar. As I recall there where five positions. 3 up and 2 down. So, you could pull up, click it in to the first cam position, and you'd tuned to F - next click up was F#, and the last click was G - going the other direction, you could lock it down to Eb, and then D. At least that's how I remember it...it's been a long time.

      Nice job Jim!! Great tone you got there and I know that song was difficult to play w/o a capo or trans-trem. All those fast hammer on and pull offs etc, done with the ring and pinky. Ouch.
      --I have one of those all black No trans-trem “Steinberger” guitars made or licensed by “Spirit.” Came with active emg’s. The bridge can be locked in one place or floating. Pretty simple design. It wasn’t very expensive when I bought it 20 yrs ago. I love playing this VH song on it for the nostalgia reasons and for the fun, but I have to use a capo.

      @@Dberesford10 Thanks, ABN! I can't remember why I figured out playing it this way....I used to have a Steinberger with a trans trem, and played it the right way - but like an idiot, I sold it somewhere back in the mid-late 90s...I do have one of the Hohner copies, it's actually a great little guitar. Probably not unlike the "Spirit" model that you've got. Fun to play...Thanks for watching!

    Jim, Eddie blamed his tongue cancer on metal picks. This got me thinking about the influence of the pick on the brown sound. Have you experimented with different materials/gauges? What have you discovered? Amazing channel. Thanks so much for what you're doing.

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Nika! I think the metal pick may have been experimented with, but I can't think of any song / album that it might've been used on. Just the attack of the string, the pick slides / scrapes, photo evidence, etc.....up until the Hagar years, when he switched to the nylon picks (Jim Dunlop, grey), he's always used a celluloid (standard) Fender Medium, and it's rumored at times he went to a thin...I do know that in 1981 (I caught it when he threw it), on the Fair Warning tour, he was using an imprinted (VH Logo and Signature), D'Andrea "thin-medium" celluloid - .53MM....but yes, I've experimented, and it's amazing how much substrate and flex, and thickness change the tone. So, if you like the tone on the first 6 albums, stick to the medium, or less, celluloid picks.

    • @BB-hb4gz
      @BB-hb4gz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jegauss Yeah, I always thought that the connection between placing a metal pick in his mouth while tapping, and his tongue cancer was tenuous at best. I am still curious about the tonal e/affects that his string winding technique/frozen strings strorage had on his tone. I remember in the 80's, keeping my string packs in the freezer 'cause of Eddie. My Mom thought I was mental!

      @jegauss  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BB-hb4gz Ha! Yeah, I agree with your mom 😉 That whole string winding, freezing, boiling thing was either a bunch of nonsense meant to keep everyone off of Ed's sound / technique, or that there is truth in the boiling - He did that when they were broke, and he couldn't afford a new set of strings. As far as his string winding, and "spinning the string in the block" as he was winding it around the peg...I tried it (I did it, too - back then, I think we all did) Anyway, no difference in tuning stability with the standard trem, and certainly no tone difference. Thanks John! For this, none. I'm running through the usual signal chain - Shure wireless, into the MXR Flanger - Phase 90, and the the Echoplex EP3. But, none of those are engaged. This video is using my wet/dry/wet rack, rig. So, it's got some rack effects mixed. The chorus type sound is a pitch detune, handled by a Lexicon MPX-1, and there's probably some echo in there, that would be a pair of Roland SDE 3000 digital delays - those run into an H/H power amp, that powers the two outside Marshall cabinets for the effect to blend with the dry cabinet in the middle - so technically, no pedals 😉

    You do EVH better than EVH. But, I'm still waiting for that Warren DiMartini "Invasion" tone. That's the elusive tone that's right up there with EVH's Fair Warning tone (IMO). If anyone can figure out what's in that secret sauce....it's you! Btw...wasn't this around the time that Ed went to using a Soldano? Or, was this still his Marshall days? This was what...87-88? I can't remember exactly when he made that switch, or what album he wound up using it on. I just remember thinking how foolish it was to use an amp like a first gen Soldano, then pile all those effects on top of it. I think Carnal Knowledge was one of them. But, I digress... Hey, I wanted to reach out to you about that Frankie you had built. You sent me a spec sheet for what you ordered and from whom, and I can't find it anywhere. UGH! No need to put you through all of that again...but, I was hoping you would let me know what company you used again, if you don't mind. 👍

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Phil! Thank you! I agree, Warren had a great tone, too. Not too different from the earlier VH stuff, but enough that it was unique. Pretty sure he was using almost all of the same type of gear that Ed was, back then.....? If memory serves, Ed used the Marshall on 5150 and OU812 as the main amp, and then started messing with the Soldano on F.U.C.K. - I think....
      As far as my Frankie goes, it's a Musikraft, northern ash body, but I don't think they make them anymore? The neck is also a Musikraft Frankie neck. It's a 10" radius, 1-11/16" wide at the nut. But, I've recently gotten some bodies and necks from Locke Custom guitars. I think, right now, Chris Locke has the most accurate VH parts around. So, check them, out too. Musikraft is great, but it might require some phone calls / emails to see if they still offer those bodies. Good luck!

      @@jegauss Outstanding....thank you sir! And, thank you for the dimensions as well. The neck shape/radius is something that is next to impossible to try and figure out if you've only got experience with one neck. Sometimes there are too many options for a dude playing guitar as a 2nd instrument, and it's hard to know where to begin. I'm a dude with very small hands. Anyway....thanks again for getting me that info again, Jim. Looking forward to your next video, as always. P.S. I agree with you on Warren's tone Would still be fun to see how close you could get.... 👍

      I built it, and I assume you certainly aren't referring to me as "the Kid." 😉

    Jim, what pickup is in that Kramer?

    • @jegauss
      @jegauss  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Curt, pretty sure I've got the Duncan '59 in for this video - it's either that or a Gibson '57 classic. I shot this last year, and the way I flop pickups in and out of these guitars, I tend to lose track. But, this sounds like the A5 in the Duncan ' 59. Either way, it's a relatively low output, PAF style pickup. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    Upmost respect for Joe Satriani, but you played this better than he did!
