I actually don't get why people hate your media takes so much lol. I usually find myself either agreeing or softly disagreeing. Especially with video games, I think gamer nerds have this cognitive dissonance where they want video games to be taken seriously as art, but when you start critiquing it as art rather than entertainment they get super pissy. They're not mad that your takes are bad, they're mad that the takes are deeper than "I like the thing you like."

@@samf.s.7731 Elden ring is definitely one of the best open world games ever made, maybe even the greatest. I adore fromsoft games truly, but honestly when all was said and done some stuff about elden rings content kinda fell short imo, and I really think it's a limitation of the style of game because I know from really gave it their best.
And like a lot of other open world games, it's stuff that ends up feeling like filler. There are a lot of random crypts and caves in Elden ring that are barely worth doing once, and definitely not worth doing twice, and reused bosses pops up just a little bit too much. Outside of that it's a 10/10.

    • @RevolutionaryGuitar
      @RevolutionaryGuitar ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think the fallout games are pretty good at creating an open world that isn’t just copy and pasted slop. At every location you’ll find an interesting and often unique story via side quest, person, or terminal. And on your way to the locations you will have random encounters some of which are unique and some of which are not. The games that do it the best imo are fallout 2, 3, and New Vegas (haven’t played 1, and 1&2 are a bit different because they don’t have a continuous open world but it’s still open none the less). Fallout 4 is especially terrible because of the copy and paste settlement quests and the way all of the main factions basically have the exact same story. But overall I think they do a good job for open world games.

For the last 20% of the game you don't fight any new enemies save some bosses. AGAIN I LIKE ELDEN RING but I've also been playing the souls games and many other games for a long time. The game gets very stretched at the end. Half of the content in the game you might as well skip in repeat playthroughs as a lot of areas offer nothing to the player depending on their build. I'd argue the game was too big for its own good. Tbh I can go on and on with the issues of elden ring, but I guess if you can find issues in something you enjoy that must mean I think it's awful

The only bad media take Vaush has is on the Evangelion Rebuild series. He completely missed the criticism being levied at the audience and condemned the whole thing as a result of his inattentiveness. Like c'mon. Hell is portrayed as a never ending torrent of Evas. How much more on the nose do they have to get? Anno was doing the "Eat your slop little piggies." thing. Vaush loves that.
The nonsense from most people is them mistaking their inference for his implication or lack thereof combined with what is frankly the McDonalds of media diets. That is, inexperience with a wide enough variety of the same set of ideas to form a meaningful concept of what it means when those ideas are being used more or less successfully. Something that only comes with age and experience. This is the source of like, 90% of the vitriol from what I've seen.
Vaush is wrong about some stuff. We all are, we can't know everything. But of course, chat never takes advantage of these moments because they are too busy being mad about that other stuff I mentioned. His incorrectness on a given thing gets rolled into chat's sense of exasperation at their misunderstanding and then someone says something conflating the two which sets Vaush off and that's where all of these conversations devolve into a circular mess.
Chat is uncharitable, Vaush doesn't want to contextualize every little thing, this is oil and water. Just don't do it.

I think a lot of Vaushs media takes are either not the complete picture or partially wrong.
When they're not the complete picture, it's typically a good addition to the mainstream take, and since no take by itself can capture the full picture (postmodernism), I like these takes for complementing my half baked media takes, even if it sometimes takes a lot of thinking to combine to two into a cohesive unit of a take.
The takes where he's partially wrong can be annoying, but even they add to the picture. They should be taken with a much bigger grain of salt and all, but they can still be valuable.
Most importantly, whether Vaushs media takes are good or bad isn't all that important, we should just accept his opinion and either respectfully disagree or learn from it.

I think one reason people get a defensive over media takes (aside from making the media we consume our entire identities) is often times people will use "blah blah blah.......but it's okay if you like it" as a sort of half-assed shield that downplays the person's original opinion in order to look like they're making a sort of "compromise" with you. It's like a parent going "Drinking soda is bad for your teeth, but it's okay if you want to drink it", it feels passive aggressive.
It's the same thing whenever someone caveats their review/assesment/critique with "of course, nothing's perfect". I hate it so much, it's like, fucking, I know dude, of course nothing is perfect, you're just saying that as a way to hedge your bets in case your opinion isn't aligned with the popular opinion. It's the same with "it's okay if you like it", yeah, I know it's okay if I like it, but you mentioning that is your way to hedge your bets in case your opinion isn't aligned with the popular opinion, so it feels like you're hiding a judgement behind it when you really aren't. Big "wearing a t-shirt that says 'I hate anal sex' and saying 'people are asking questions my shirt already answers'" energy. Vaush would be better off just stating his opinion and not make caveats in those instances.

Rude. Implies the other person is lazy or stupid.
"This game is so damn easy it's mind-numbing, but I know alot of people play games to relax"

Ok, but can you see why "...often times people will use..." is unfair on the part of the listener. That someone making that assumption is using inference and mistaking it for implication? Especially in this situation where Vaush has talked about this subject many times.
"...of course nothing is perfect, you're just...." This is the same thing. It's very uncharitable. Maybe the person is just trying to acknowledge that a thing has flaws but going into them would be too much effort in the current circumstance. Or else that they are of such minor consequence that they feel they are only worth a vague acknowledgement.
You're assuming dishonesty and pandering while ignoring the context in which that statement has been made.

I agree with vaush on a lot of his media takes, and disage with a lot of others. There are times that i hear him or someone else insult a piece of media i like, and for a second i feel personally insulted... But then i instantly realize that its all just down to personal preference, and its possible to like a piece of media, yet simultaneously understand that there are likely valid criticisms of it and its stupid for me to feel like someone insulting or criticizing a game i like is a personal slight against me.
I actually quite enjoy hearing the opinions other people have on the media i enjoy because a lot of times i learn new ways of thinking about it.
No media is perfect, and critical analysis of it is a great way for us to understand it better (as well as understand ourselves and the culture we live in better, since the media we enjoy is a reflection of us and our culture).
I guess my overall point is that people need to quit connecting their entire identity to media they enjoy. Someone else dosent like the same shit you do?

I feel Vaush doesn't like survival games or their mechanics. To be fair, a lot of games have been mashing genres to lead to larger games and using the iterative map creation process to make things larger. I think its sort of a balance the developers need create to make sure the dead space between landmarks feels like exploration and not like tedious filler, but some are never going to enjoy an open world if they don't enjoy the challenges or puzzles at the ports of interest. I imagine that vaush wouldn't enjoy something like sons of the forest, rust, or minecraft (as he mentioned) more because that genre is doing more of a competitive survive mechanic and using the large world to hide things. I can admit it's annoying when ubisoft and EA uses this model in its story based games, mainly because it seems to inflate it with filler rather than challenge.
Another way I look at it is the maps are characters in the game that you're always interacting with. Open world maps can be interesting characters as long as they aren't flat and offering only one sort of challenge or story as you move along. Linear stories do a better job being interesting because it shows yiu what it wants, but even that can get repetitive if it's constantly the same halls and corridors.
As for for the spending money for "animating grabbing a can of beans", i appreciate it. I like the immersive experience and I think its part of the cowboy fantasy everyone wants to play out in Red Dead Redemption 2 skyrim as well, they place items either in world or in containers you can loot, which I prefer over the JRPG style in final fantasy 15 or dark souls series of just a little shiny thing on the ground. It's a small detail, but it was almost enough to take me out of it.
My question for vaush though is what did he think of the dishonored series map design? I feel like dishonored 2's clockwork mansion and Stilton manor in death to the outsider showed some really interesting ways to handle level design when coupled with game mechanics.

Idk if my earlier comment sent. Most chatters in the youtube comments are meming when it comes to "Vaush having bad media takes." Reddit is a different breed though!

As I was listening to this, I was playing Crash Bandicoot 4, restarting the same level I already beat for the 20th time, because in order to get 106% in the game you need to get all 6 gems in each level and not die doing so before moving on to play the exact same level YET AGAIN, but “N. Verted” (ooh it’s like mirrored this time) with another 6 gems to collect. Vaush is absolute spot on when it comes to companies artificially padding out game length and how something like that compared to, say, Mario Sunshine is night and day

I think my biggest issue with open world games is that I don’t even remember most or even a lot of what I have played. Like a linear game like TLoU2, God of War, Resident Evil 4 remake, I remember so much more of those games than I do ToTK, RDR2 or even Elden Ring (which I actually do love and consider one of my all time favorites)

I dunno. I flipped a coin, which bounced off my d20, which fell off the shelf onto my random number generator, which said, "Vaush is right, on this one." Which isn't even a number, but whatevs.

57:45 I'm reminded of how fortunate I am that I spent time on Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning instead, that game has more of a God of War approach to the gameplay and strong writing (albeit a bit tropy)

Skyrim is the king of lets finish 30% of everything and let the modders figure it out. So depressing where the Elder Scrolls has gone.

I got lost posting my thoughts on D2 map design, I meant to post in the reddit thread discussing Vaush's takes, but ended up in a similar thread instead. My opinion that "While many games have random maps, d2 does it just a little bit differently. With sufficient experience you can read the map in d2 and know where to go based on understanding how the game builds each location" was benign enough that I left it, but I stand by my mistakes. Random maps are not all created equally, and few games have done them as well as D2.

Sometimes I wonder if these comments on Reddit on Vaush's media opinions are just shitposters looking for a reaction, then they come to these videos and are cackling to themselves when their comment gets raged on... I mean, I don't go on Reddit, so I don't know the vibe there. Maybe that isn't a motivation...

16:00 I agree that poorly made open world is boring, but there are reasons why we enjoy good open worlds. For me its about the atmosphere, world building, and imermersion. Games like The Elder Scrolls, WoW Classic, BOTW, Witcher... on and on, these games understand how to be large, and interesting.
