Love this video. I too did my TEFL through ITA. I'm in the process of completing my practicum. Most importantly, thanks for the timeline that you did. It was super informative. All the best :)
Hey girl I hope you're enjoying the experience so far! I got into the Fall 2018 team and I was wondering, was Yongin your first choice? I really want to be placed in my preferred city haha. If I end up living nearby it would be great to meet up! I was born in London but I'm Korean so I could maybe show you a thing or two around Korea! Your videos are super helpful, especially as I applied directly, not through a recruiter :(
Hello! Seoul was my first choice, but I really like my city actually. It’s only 1 hour from Seoul! And since transportation is super cheap, it’s not inconvenient at all. I would love to have a little tour of Korea :) lmk if you’re close!
Just decided I want to become a teacher. I’ve always loved leaching but never realized that’s what I wanted to do as a career. Then I found these programs and the more I look into Korean culture etc the more I feel it was meant for me to teach there. I’m super scared but I want to go. Any tips on how to get started?
That's awesome that you feel like Korea is meant for you! I started there, too. I knew I wanted to travel and teach somewhere, but I didn't know where. I loved the Korean culture and it just so happens that Korea has one of the best benefits with teaching! I recommend contacting a recruiter and getting started with a TEFL course if you haven't already. Most places will require you to be certified with teaching English, unless you went to college for that. Just keep researching as much as you can and your recruiter can also help you choose the right place for you. I'm not going to say it wasn't scary at first, but it definitely gets easier and it'll be an adventure of a lifetime! Hope everything works out for you (:
Hi can you tell me which TEFL course you took? There are so many different kinds and I am kinda confused. I do want to finish asap and do not want to take the wrong one. Can you please advise? Thanks in advance!
tmiiensato hello! I took the TEFL course through International TEFL Academy. I understand your confusion since there’s so many companies! ITA was super expensive when I signed up, and it’s one of the pricier ones, if I’m being honest. When I got to orientation, I heard a lot of people saying they went through courses that were $29!! That just seemed really sketchy to me, but we all ended up in the same place so I can’t say that didn’t work out for them. I can’t say I completely recommend ITA, I would say just find one that has a decent amount of reviews and meets the requirements that you’re looking for ie. number of hours, in class time, etc. Hope it works out for you :)
Happy Potato To my knowledge, if you have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in education, you do not need to have a TEFL! If you go through a recruiter, I would double check because EPIK policies do change from time to time! Best of luck :)
Do Does Thank you for replying! I watched a few videos about the requirements of apply for EPIK and one of the requirements says something about getting a bachelor degree from an “accredited college/university” so dose that mean any college/university?
Do Does That’s a reliefs. It seems like there is a lot of things to do and a lot of waiting. I know it would be worth it. I just hope I can find someone to “hold my hand” and guild me through these steps because it seems confusing. Hopefully I get my papers right and get to go to korea!
Who would you get the letters of recommendation from? I’ve just had part-time work (due to health concerns) since graduating college and I’ve been graduated for two years, but I really am very interested in doing this.
World Princess I got my letters of recommendation from my manager and a professor from my college! You can always reach out to your college professors even if you’ve graduated! If you’re really concerned about whether it’ll be accepted, you should contact a recruiter. They’re super helpful :)
Great video! I'm just wondering how competitive it is to get into EPIK? I've heard people say that it's harder than law school, then again I've heard people say that they interview everyone that meets qualifications. I'm a first year college student, so I'm still a ways away from being able to apply, but I hope that the program will still be alive and well by the time I get my Bachelor's!
GeoffLeeRee honestly, I think the competitiveness comes from getting your documents in on time. Unless you totally blow the interview or have a terrible application, I wouldn’t be too concerned about getting in. However, I did hear that it gets more competitive each year, so it’s hard to speak for how EPIK will be in the future. Just make sure you start researching how to apply and all that at an early time. I recommend going through a recruiter. They definitely help with the timeline and anything else you need! :)
Wow thanks for the fast reply! I just have one more question. Will they look down on someone that has a Bachelor's of Education from an online college? I'm at an actual college right now, but my counselor is dead set on me finishing in 4 years OR MORE, and after careful research, I realize i can finish a Bachelor's of Ed. from an accredited online college in just 3 years. Would the college that the degree came from matter? Or will they just test your skills in an interview?
Honestly, I'm not entirely sure. I would reach out to a recruiter for that answer. In my opinion, I think EPIK cares more that you have a Bachelor's degree. It doesn't matter what subject or college. So to me, an online college seems fine as long as you get a diploma. You'll need to get that notarized and apostilled. During my interview I didn't get asked anything about my college. Hopefully that helps!
Hey! So I know that in order to apply you need a bachelors degree in anything and/or teaching certificate. If my degree won't be in anything related to education, do I need the certificate? And based on your experience, does anyone look down on not having a degree? Thanks!
Phoebe hi! You need both a bachelors degree and a teaching certificate if your major wasn’t in education. Also, I’m not sure what you mean about people looking down on you for not having a degree.
Ok great, thank you for your answer! As far as the second part of my comment, I guess I just wondered if it's better to have a bachelors degree and a certificate rather than just a certificate, does the extra education and experience help prepare yourself better? I'm currently in the process of earning my degree and have my sights on EPIK in the next few years!
Phoebe Oh. Sorry, I was confused with your question. You must have a bachelor’s degree in order to be eligible for the EPIK program. The teaching certification is only necessary if the degree is in anything other than education. Hope that answers your question! :)

Hi! Did you take your TEFL course before you applied or during the process of applying?
kellybell I started my TEFL course before I applied and finished it during the application process!
Do you still need a TEFL if you got a bachelor degree in Education?
Where can you take TEFL?

Happy Potato yes. Most colleges will work as long as you can provide a diploma from it!
