Casio HT-3000 - Spectrum Dynamic synth

- The HT-3000 (1987) is from the digital-analogue hybrid "Spectrum Dynamic" synthesis family of Casio keyboards. It has a DCO-VCF-DCA synthesis structure with a single oscillator, but using initial waveforms that vary over time, with a resonant analogue filter and a stereo chorus effect with three modes. Parameters can all be edited, although the interface is irritating; one parameter (e.g. filter cutoff, parameter 10) can be tweaked in real-time using the data wheel. A mini-key variant, the HT-700, has the same sounds and most of the same features, while the HT-6000 is more sophisticated, with 4 VCOs, 8 VCFs, and a lot more waveforms to choose from.
All sounds you hear in the track were made using the HT-3000, apart from the kick drum, which is from Logic Pro's Drumsynth. Drum sounds can be accessed by selecting 92 using the rotary dial, which allows the user to record and save a rhythm pattern to one of the internal memory slots or an external memory card. Compatible memory cards are hard to come by now and internal memory is unfortunately reset each time the unit is unplugged from the mains.

These SD synths are definitely part of this complete breakfast. It's a lovely song as always! You probably noticed the keyboard on that thing is really nice too, even if it doesn't quite make up for the lousy settings UI. Alllso, if you ever find someone to loan you a CT-6000, I think you'd find that very interesting too. It has fixed filters like the older Casios, but has a richer stereo chorus than the HT line, several unison modes, main+accomp layering, and the instruments have 6 DCOs instead of 2. Along with having both velocity and aftertouch.

@@alfonsemusic The HT6000 is still no pro instrument but almost. VCF is polyphonic, even in the accomp section. Drums are identic but with many addtional ones, f. e. a typical late 80s crashing snare & an orch. hit f. e. Only bass patches are presets but there are several ones to select, even a synth bass. It shares any HT series' waves plus some variationes but uses 4 (unfortunately) identical waves per patch that can extremely be pitched up seperately. Any DCO can have different vel curves that are transitioning from 0 to 99. (I've never seen something like that anywhere else.) Ring mod is a valuable addition (my piano patches make use of that) & there's a white & a metallc noise DCO (latter amusingly reminds of analogue TR-series). To me its the best table hooter of its time. If you're interested in how it can sound, I've done some heavily programmed out of the box patches a while ago. Its on the "cloud" with the "sound" in its name. If you want to, just google "Daniel Francois Gerard HT6000 demo". That's certainly no advertisement, exceptionally just for listening purpose.

Looking to invest in a Yamaha DX 21. As they don't have built in speakers, do you connect it directly to some speakers, or can you connect it to an interface? I'm assuming these older models did not have any USB?
You'll be able to connect via audio (jack) cables to an interface or an amp/ speakers with jack inputs. Also dx21 has midi connectivity via DIN cables. USB tech appeared in the mid to late 90s - not sure when it first started being used for midi and audio but you can assume any keyboard pre 2000 wouldn't have usb connectivity.

P. S.: The CT6000 from '84 is also cool but a lot less programmable than HT-series.
