  • We hit the backcountry of Southwestern Utah for some exploring on dual sport motorcycles, Jen is riding the Yamaha XT250 and I am on the Honda CRF300L. The area had some decent flooding the day before due to heavy monsoon rainfall and some roads had been closed. Our particular exit road from the dirt was one such road but we figured we could connect to another dirt road further west to get back to St George if we had too.
We began in the same area as a week prior, The Grapevine Spring area, but we pushed further west..this time we wanted to have a look at a place named Butcher Knife Canyon. Sounded too cool!
I was a little concerned about gas in the event we had to ride all the way to Beaver Dam Wash but turns out after we got through the canyon the distance wasn't as great as I had expected and we decided to push through with our original exit strategy and head down and out through the closed Motoqua Road. All ended well and we got to ride and see some pretty awesome country although the flooding had torn up quite a bit of the roads but that wasn't a problem for the lighter bikes!

It is fun to watch a ride with both of you, getting different perspectives. Looks like a fun place to explore. Its interesting to see you do that and RacerRed treating his dirt bike like a snowmobile up in Idaho around the same time.

Pretty much every time I go to a summit I do this. It is also nice and quiet coasting down mountains without the engine sound. Kinda peaceful .

Super nice ride, wish I lived where you do today. The vid lasted all the way through my workout! The 300l is sitting in the garage, 41* outside, 4 mph wind, awesome day for a ride on Illinois version of your trail, lol.

How come Jen is not riding the Himalayan? Be safe and I enjoy your videos.

We weren't sure of road conditions after so much rain, felt the lighter bikes would be a better idea that far back in the desert. Appreciate you watching!

Having done the ride do you think you could have made it on the KLR and Himalayan? For larger amounts of extra gas would you do the rotopax or soft bags like the giant loop? Did you ever figure out why the canyon was called Butcher Knife? Thanks for the motorcycle content, it's fun to watch.

Oh absolutely, the KLR and the Himalayan would have been fine. Initially, we just weren't sure of road conditions so the smaller bikes sounded like a better option. I carried a Rotopax on the XT250 for a bit until I laid the bike down and the Rotopax began leaking. Soft bags can (and will) get punctured...especially in the desert. I think I'll stick with MSR fuel bottles for the time being. Nope, still don't know how the name came about??

Enjoyed the ride. Can't believe all the roads out your way. Wondering if they are due to mining activity?

Yeah, there are a maze of dirt roads and jeep tracks out here. Most definitely many were created for mining activity at some point.

What windshield does Jen run on her bike? I'd like to get one for my wife's 250 if you recommend it. Thanks!

It's a Parabellum Rally Shield, works great.

You can coast all the way down big mountains to save gas. Engine off. I do it all the time . You do not have vacuum actuated brakes so it is fine . You can go way further saving gas down mountains and dumb shit like that where you do not have to idle the engine .

the pov in the crf looks more stable than the xt, is that bc of the suspension in the crf?

That road you are on was made last year . To search for lithium. You think once they find it they will just move on. Nope they are going to strip out Utah , Nevada , Arizona New Mexico . The list keeps growing . Tell people the actually effects of lithium mining. The open pit mines . Open pool lithium ponds. People keep wanting these power wheels to drive . The result is far worse than gasoline ever .
