I made the mistake of trying to read Kant on my own when I was in high school. I had read Descartes Meditations and Critique of Pure Reason happened to be the next book I grabbed. Bad choice. I was nowhere near ready for Kant. I had to read the book with a dictionary and by the time I was done, I had no idea what the book actually said, I was simply happy I finished it. I completely ignored Kant and had extreme bias for 10 years towards him after that. Now I love Kant and actually appreciate WHY he wrote his books like he did.
In summary, dont just read the books cliche people say that you "must read to ever properly study philosophy let alone ever hope.of engaging in". Read what excites your mind.and makes your life filled with question that inspire wonder. In that way real philosophy gets done. By the transfer and assimilation and then critique of ideas in a ever expanding forum of all people.
Edit: are.you reading any books.right now? I just read animal farm again for fun and have been tackling the works of Kafka lately. All very much highly recommended as philosophical fiction.
@@ieatpaste8360 😅Birds of a feather folck together ig. I too am in High School and I too am trying to read a very hard book. Its Discipline and Punish by Michael Foucault and luckinly i dont have to keep a dictionary cause i just merriam-webster everything. Although i wont say i dont completely understand, i do think i understand some things cause i have a friend who has read it and it helps.

Th Critique of Pure Reason is just baffling to me, I don't get it! Even Kant himself said it is an awful, boring, tedious read!

I shared this on my Facebook for my friends who are too dumb to read and comprehend the text. 😂 Self reliance is my favorite essay of all time, and you paraphrase it nicely and build on Emerson’s points well.
I didn’t realize virtue signaling existed before modern times. I will definitely have to read more about him after my deep dive into Schopenhauer. Thanks for your contribution.

7:20 Regurgitating what others have written is the foundation upon which modern academia is built; if you don't cite the work of others enough, your own academic work is considered worthless.
Interesting that Emerson wasn’t too far off from his theory about the future of philosopher. He said that they will be poets in the future, couldn’t we agree that philosophy today is mostly explored in art such as books, movies and shows?
We ALL conform to society ... just in different degrees. Freud's Civilization and its Discontents summarizes this nicely.

I trust my fork stabbing intuitions, but not the justice system. Maybe that makes me a poor businessman. Social capital seems to breed material capital which in turn buys various freedoms/safeguards

Essentially, Emerson overestimated the individual and his "uniqueness".
As I was growing up, I was confused by the amount of ideas and philosophies bombarding me, saying be this way and that way.
When they attempted to teach me christianity around the age of 7, I said how come only Jesus got to go straight to heaven by allowing others to sacrifice his body? Why only he? Why not me? Why is it that everyone else has to work to get to heaven, and not have the opportunity to also be sacrificed and sent straight to heaven, if reaching heaven is the goal? Sacrifice me, too, and let me get to the goal now.
When teachers attempted to teach me "American" history in 7th grade, I said isn't America two continents? Isn't mexico and Canada part of N America? Why are you only teaching me about pilgrims, a single revolution, and a single civil war when there's been several of them in "America". The teacher proceeded to refine the name of the class only in speech, and said this is U.S. history and nothing else.
I'm just supposed to agree because others believe a thing? No.
When I wasn't understanding how the western mind thought and made decisions, I looked into what they based their culture on and studied it. From Socrates (and before him) and Plato, down to todays western philosophers, and I realized how ridiculous it is and how close to religion it is, requiring faith or belief in an idea physically unprovable.
I began to debate people and destroy their arguments with their own tools.
Here's one for all the constitutional people holding on to dead men's (your founding fathers) philosophies and ways of living.
No one is required to be a citizen of any nation, just because they happen to be born on a particular patch of earth.
And for you "law" hounds..
It is better to live in a savage world, than to live under the laws of savage men (aka your founding fathers, current leaders, all politicians).
That is not philosophy, thats reality.
"Team human being"..... I think we have found the problem.
Emerson's phony individualism IS THE STATUS QUO. Human cooperation revolves around KINSHIP, not INDIVIDUALISM.
