My mom, from Lahaina, used to always cook enough for an army. She said there was nothing worse than running out of food. Better to have lots of leftovers for everyone to take to make plate lunch for the next day. Thanks, Andy, for reminding me of my roots. My dad was a Waipahu boy and you remind me so much of him...
When you talk about bringing food to someone's gathering…the person needs to be schooled in Aloha…I use the late, great Rell Sunn as my guide…she always say, "Aloha is giving…you give and you give and you give some more…you give from here (touching her heart) then you give from here (touching her stomach) and when you think you have no more to give, reach down and give a little more."
Right on! Das right....geeve um all you got and more where dat came from. Surprise you have so much to give you neva' know you had. Das Aloha spirit,.. deep respect and love fo' each odda'..... An' dats what it's all about.
Andy, thank you so much for clearing up the local food etiquette issues! You don't know how many times I had to teach haoles on this topic so dat dey no get cracks from us local people! Now I just going show dem this video! Lol! Tanks ah!
Wow! You ain’t kidding! I barely ever cook Hawaiian food for my wife and her two kids anymore. I get so salty when they no like. Take em personal. Lol and I was only stationed in Hawaii for seven years. I think I left most of my heart there. I never come out to visit because it hurts too bad to leave. Aloha my brudder!
I didn't know until I moved to the mainland that ketchup on eggs wasn't normal. When I was a little kid, I when go visit my auntie jenny in kihei and she made me and my brother eggs with ketchup and we eat 'um under the mango tree. onolicious.
I know yeah? Ketchup or should with eggs and rice. So ono and da people here they act like it's food from one different planet! Even chili Pepa water so ono!!
Totally not just a Hawaii thing. My family and a shit ton of people in the north east do it.. I also lived in Hawaii 10 years and saw more people put shoyu than ketchup
Mr. Bumatai, You are such "one" gentleman!! (Learning from you...) Congratulations on the Aloha approach of teaching local Hawaiian hospitality etiquette!! I am an old time Brazilian girl from Ipanema English humu who is about to move back to Hawaii after a 20 year hiatus. Now studying Hawaiian 'olelo and culture in order to apply for a teaching job in the public system in Oahu.Came across your material yesterday, and would like to thank you for putting out such comprehensive and informative material in the most elegant and humorous manner. God bless you for your linguistic verve. Yours, Cecilia Piani.
awww, great episode. This brings back memories from the first time(s) the haole get to meet the family. These were almost the same instructions I got back in the day. Could never go wrong bringing da haupia pie from Ted's Bakery on Kam Highway near Sunset Beach.
I had to learn this the hard way. I don't know how many times I invited someone to a bbq or potluck. Then they show up with a bag of chips. Now I always say "no chips" and "bring enough for multiple people". Good show as always. Thanks Andy.
Hawaiian culture is awesome. My father is from Hawaii. Lives in Europe now but he brought me up Hawaiian way. It stays weird in Europe so my friends group is rather small. Lol
Mahalo Classified, Check out TH-cam.com/AndyBumataiShow for more Hawaii content. Maybe your father's old neighborhood might be in one of the videos. I Live Stream every Tuesday and Thursday on TH-cam, Facebook, Twitch and LinkedIn at 3PM Hawaii time. See you in the Stream. Aloha.

Thank you bradda Andy. I gave another LIKE to your channel. The Islands is about bonding, blending all cultures, accepting and finally giving respect to the islands and peoples. Bradda Andy highlighted food.... this is a huge thing. Food brings us all together, young & old, friends and yes family. Notice Andy says, bring enough for 10 or at least 6 !!! . And if you host at your place.....make enough for family, friends to take home. Peace & Mahalo

Hey, Uncle Andy-- Great post! I'm from the Mainland but like ketchup w/ eggs & mayo on hamburgers-- here's one to add: kimchi on a hamburger (w/ mayo, of course)-- broke da mouth! Mahalo & aloha!
My local friend Randy from Ewa Beach got me into tabasco on eggs pupus back in the 80s. He told me go try on half one hard boiled and I was hooked... broke da mout. Hamburgas... I used to like eat the Mushroom Burga at Zippy's. These days I like 5 Braddahs.
The way you describe putting stuffs on your food sounds like where I grew up-Pennsylvania Dutch country. When working for a local familly in Pearl City, they used to bring stuffs in for me to try and eat. Too much fun on both sides: me eating new foods and them checkin' out if the " malihini" gonna eat da kine. I always say if you go hungry in Hawaii, you are one picky eater 'cuz got so much tasty variety. Mahalo for fun post
Andy, I really enjoyed this segment. Besides making me real hungry, it got me thinking about other Local customs, like Omiyage, when speaking of food & what to do. Maybe you could do a show on some of the more important Local customs that many newer folks (see, I used "folks) do not know, or the younger kids may have forgotten. Mahalo for keeping it real and honest. That's the best part of your show. Aloha.

Hey Andy- you like eat one balut? That's where I personally draw the line LOL. I'd much rather have haupia filled malasadas from Leonard's Bakery- now THAT broke da mout!

Yeah, it's live at 6am HST, 9am Pacific and so on. Can watch it on the reruns, but why not speak to Andy directly? Chance em.
you could call this video "how to make friends and influence people' lol....eh, food is the way to most people's heart :) btw, Andy, you can loan my father's term for his eating ..."the human garbage disposal' haha. I take after him I think and sounds like you are of the same kind...I often say "if it stops moving for a moment, its deemed food' lol.
oh and 'ketchup' (we call it just tomato sauce or 'tommy sauce' or just sauce) on eggs is yummy! Agree with you! I will have to try sauce with 'hot sauce' on my eggs sometime (we call hot sauce tabasco even if I buy another brand lol). Another nice sauce is 'worcestershire' sauce. Good for eggs, meats, stews...anything. Pretty sure that originates in UK (given the names sounds like a pommy place name :P) . Maybe you have same or similar in Hawaii? I forget the pidgin for soy sauce, but screw kikoman or others, try get some that say 'mushroom flavored' (brand I can get is 'Pearl River Bridge', or at least that is the english on bottle lol). I swear, the moment I first bought this, I never ever went back to other soy sauce....so, you might thank me for putting you onto it if you havent had already! :P omg, this makes me look like a sauce addict.....extra funny as we say 'hitting the sauce' to mean getting drunk, sauce also means alcohol lol
When I doubt. Ask. Bad comments on food is not good anywhere on the planet. No matter how bad it is.... shake your head up and down.... yes it's good. I live overseas now. When my wife goes out to a friends house for a get together or party. I ask her to bring home some of my favorites. It's like pulling teeth... just not the culture here to bring home food. No get me wrong. Going get choke food. Everyone going offer you something fo drink or eat..... even at shops. But bringing home food from a party is somehow a party foul.
I no can take my husband to Hawaii this uffa smells er’ything... I almost smacked him the first time he came in my kitchen smelling my food that I was cooking

omg, this makes me look like a sauce addict.....extra funny as we say 'hitting the sauce' to mean getting drunk, sauce also means alcohol lol
I so need to be back for 2 weeks, or more
I love ketchup on my eggs
Where's your favorite place to eat, Andy?

Bwhahahaha. Eh Brah, Spam and eggs over rice with ketsup or you go fancy kine, potagee sausage, yea?
