    I just want to take a moment to appreciate what a noble guy you are. You have one on one coaching at a really affordable price for everyone and even offer a free 30 minute meeting for people to see if it’s a good fit for them which is something really rare for coaches to do and really empathetic and sweet. And above all that you literally just want to help everyone and improve powerlifting and share so much information with us for free. I just want to thank you. I’m signing up for a free meeting and it doesn’t Matter weather I start the coaching or not, I can say with confidence that you are a guy that we can respect.

Went through a lot of hard times and eventually realized if the world wins I win! It’s a great thing when you realize this because life just becomes so kick ass

    Ive been deadlifting for years. I got hurt in the military and quit for the last 6 years. Hard to get any motivation after working so hard and having it all taken away. Anyway. My brother in law asked me to help him lift. He is 30 and never lifted before in his life. I think im going to have him do this. It makes a lot of sense. I agree. I'm going to try it as well. I have always felt like my mechanics were off. Even though by all accounts i have a perfect deadlift. Ive always felt like I'm not pulling as strong as I can.
    I'll post back in a few months and let you know how its going.

    I'm a conventional puller and I always pull with a rounded back. Had some people tell me I'll "injure myself", but I, too, experience more pain post-lift when I focus on "keeping my spine neutral". I also get crazy muscle knots that way 🤔

    I LOVE your brief commentary about sharing your full knowledge and as a separate stream to the 1 on 1 and group coaching. It really pushes against the common misconception in education pedagogy that 'you can just google whatever you need to know', or 'you can just find all this info out yourself'. Its true to an extent, but nothing beats having a MKO (more knowledgeable other) who can guide you through the process to assist you in making the fastest progress possible. You're doing it right bro. Arm the masses with some solid base knowledge, but be there for those who have mastered the fundamentals so that they can excel. From a classical education perspective your approach nails it

    Man how is this content free… I see pros do this and notice I naturally do this right before breaking the ground but could never position myself right to use it to my advantage. I always found I lost upper back tightness trying to get into that position, but your “hunkering down abs” cue on the other video just makes so much sense

    I’m 61 in July 2024. I’m not a heavy lifter as you can see on my YT channel. I find upper back rounding easier to move the one rep max. I aim for the neutral back. I learnt from SS. 9 months ago at time of writing this, I started a new job and suffered from lower back pain (flawed vertebrae according to physio). Pulling with “perfect” form has limited my ability to lift heavy. I’m going to go back to rounded upper back.

    My conventional deadlift didn’t move for years because I was too focused on keeping my back straight. I have short arms relative to my torso, so that puts me in a really bad position mechanically. I also used to hurt my back a lot.
    Now I focus on making my arms long, ribs down and brace my core as hard as possible. My deadlift has gone up a fair bit since

    I've been slowly adopting a slight upper back round on my RDLs. It just feels like it works...and my back will adapt to the posture as I train. Totally agree you have to lock in the posture as you're setting up...caving forward mid lift is just asking for trouble.

    I find timing of this video really funny. I have actually been using more rounded deadlift for years(you being the main influence to stick with that form) and focusing on every aspect under a coach yet time and time again strugling with lock outs with maximal weights to the point where I was really fast od the ground, keeping the position of the back same, but hips would always lock out before back does making the lifts look like rpe 10 when from the ground it moved like rpe 7 and basically not PRing for a year. Maybe we did something wrong which led to not PRing, but we decided to try switching to more neutral position, where back lockout at the end of the lift is not needed, it’s slower from the ground and I might end up rounding my back in “action” with max weight as you mentioned, but I just ended frustrated by not progressing with rounded back…

    I always think how to keep a tight core and straight back at the same time. If I go for the straight back then I need to use a belt to keep the core tight. But belt is really uncomfortable to use. But with a rounded upper back, I'm kind of stuck at 160kg deadlift.

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like you did this wrong or it isn’t the actual cause because I’m pretty sure I’d have an injured athlete after nearly a decade of teaching this to hundreds of athletes. I’ve had a full roster of athletes since 2015 and usually that’s about 35 athletes at a time. Idk what average life expectancy of my coaching is but I’d guess about 1 year with some staying multiple years and others leaving sooner. That accumulates hundred of athletes including my group coaching which I haven’t had a single injury under Prime. That just isn’t statistically possible especially given that currently on my roster I have 3 athletes above the age of 49.

    Would love to see the setup when using straps. I'm now in a gym with super slick bars that have no knurling, and the quick top down approach doesn't seem to work so well. By the time the second strap is set, I've lost positioning and need a new breath. First rep then sucks.

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ll give you two response! My first response would be if you’re concerned with intricate deadlift setups you shouldn’t be at the gym you’re at unless you’re in a very unique circumstance. I used to travel 45 minutes one way to Boss barbell to have good equipment! Before you say I don’t have time or whatever, I was working 60 hour weeks and maintaining a lot!
      Now with the more dad like answer out of the way lol what I’ll say is get versa grips and practice setting them fast. However honestly I’ve never used straps because of your exact issues. I’m way weaker with them.

    • @seanjohnston848
      @seanjohnston848 ปีที่แล้ว

      @BrendanTietz Thanks! It's a temporary issue when I visit family for six weeks. Tried figure 8 straps, but didn't feel they were much faster. I've heard of versa grips, so will check them out.

    While I agree with you that rounding isn’t inherently a bad thing or injurious (thoracic rounding), do you think people should learn to pull neutrally first before attempting to start rounded? I generally bias flexión and work hard to stay neutral for my sumo pulls

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a great question and I used to say yes but just found that to be useless if I was coaching hands on. Like I
      Mention in the article, goals matter. Realistically a general fitness enthusiasts shouldn’t bother because they aren’t excited enough about deadlifts to learn this well. Yet a strength focussed athlete easily will have the tenacity to get this. Honestly it’s nearly as simple!
      Think about what you just expressed as an example: “fight hard to stay neutral”
      this infers that it’s against natural pulling mechanics. I don’t even try to stop my back from rounding because it’s already there lol. Obviously there is a component of keeping isometric rigidity but overall it’s just way simpler to do this once you understand the bracing mechanics I shared in the website video

    When you say that if ur rounding happens in your setup and not progressively it’s ok, are you just referring to thoracic rounding or could lumbar rounding in the setup be valid. Asking because it feels almost impossible for me to not round my lower back.

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question! So in short I round my lumbar however it’s a tad tricky to do this correctly. If you can’t neutralize it though that’s a hip mobility problem! I’d definitely address that because you want access to that range even if you do round it purposefully!

    • @BrendanTietz

      I touch on that in the blog! Go check it (link in description) but basically if you wanna be strong do this! If you just want to be into fitness then straight back is better. You don’t need to be advanced though. And honestly even my more fitness based clients I teach this too but I have a feeling more general fitness folks won’t fuss with the details enough to truly nail this so they’re better off not doing it

    Do you think I could run your group coaching on a cut and still make gains in strength and size? I’m cutting super slow, .8lbs a week and all my externals are bang on.

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shift the view to a more global understanding. It seems your mind is very short term! Create a nutritional and training plan the exceeds past a cut! Think beyond can I make gains in X amount of months while cutting or doing this or that. Instead determine what’s holding you back the most because it might be the very idea of cutting. Or if the cut is a sound means to better results long term that’s fine but plan exactly how you’re going to bulk and what you’re going to do. I don’t even think what my gains are going to be in X amount of months. I instead write out specific goals and determine how I’m getting there. Which may involve a cut but if it’s planned out you’ll already know how to match the other variables.

    • @Connorleadbeater1
      @Connorleadbeater1 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m 5 foot 5 82kg and at about 20% not feeling very confident, I use to compete 74, and I’m much more competitive at 74, and I have the body fat to lose so I thought I’d go back down, I hate how my body looks and feels at 80kgs

    • @BrendanTietz
      @BrendanTietz  ปีที่แล้ว

      So what you’re saying is a bunch of random feelings you’re experiencing. Instead write down exactly what you want to achieve. Both body composition and strength wise. Now write out how you achieve that. I’m talking long term. Do you think weight classes exist for a reason? Yes! Thus you can deduce at minimum on the way down you will not gain strength. There’s no magic programs. However what you must deduce is how to gain strength after. Is a calorie surplus needed? It definitely helps and if your goals are to lift significantly more you’re going to need to eat in a surplus. So how much to keep body composition in check? Idk that’s up to you! But if you define these variables you’ll stop worrying about the perfect program and start making progress!

      The entire video and article is completely free where I explain the whole technique. I literally don’t charge a thing for anything mentioned in this video in the hopes that people will pay 25-45 a month for programming and hundreds of other videos. People pay thousands a month for consumeristic superficiality on clothes, cars, fancy dinners, etc. I swear this world is backwards man. Im not bringing in millions like these other sellouts giving away simplistic info to beginners. I’m actually slowly letting this channel die as I transition to something else because of this bullshit. Honestly this comment made me so upset because man wtf am I supposed to do?
