I can relate I'm hard on myself also I'll put section I paid some good money in a twin reverb 1965 reissue and it sounds like it's a blown speaker but it's not and it is so loud and cracks and pops can't find nobody reasonable to fix it would you be interested I also have a deluxe vintage modified I have sound clips that you can hear that are a minute long because that's all you need after about 5 to 7 minutes if you can get the deluxe to come on it will fade right out makes like a transforming grounding sound
The sound of the stock 68 DR custom channel is fantastic IMO. Works great with my pedalboard and the kind of music I’m playing. Could do with fixing the noise though I wouldn’t change the sound on it. Always get great comments from sound guys.

Love this! I had a less than stellar Pro Reverb Custom. Returned it due to well, what I didn’t know about Fenders commercial lineup. But talking to techs, if you’re willing to invest $350 or so. You can really make these amps sing. I went with a Sky King amp, but still brought it to a tech. Especially after watching the video on that, and having possible cathode output issues. I was def able to tell with these videos. I learn so much here, and very entertaining for me 😆
I love the closed captions on this... did you know this amp has a bravado channel?!? Looking forward to trying some of these ideas on my '68 Custom Princeton Reverb reissue, filter caps, etc.
I finally got around to dealing with this '68 CDR noise machine of mine that I bought this time last year. After a filter cap change to F&Ts and swapping out the NFB resistor to an 820, relocating the PT center tap and power supply filter grounds to near the PT, getting the heater circuit off the board and directly to V8, along with an ACT array, the dreaded hum and most of the hiss are gone, I mean GONE. BUT NO, WAIT! Now I have an obnoxious buzz in the reverb. Watching your Part 1 video I've discovered they mis-built my PCB, leaving the 220k mix resistor in rather than a jumper from R53. So, if I remove it and add the jumper I'll have their kludge of reverb on both channels still, but I'm not sure what kind of noise I'll have. Or, I can leave the 220k there, remove the preamp jumper and add C5 and have no reverb on the Custom channel, but maybe no buzz on the Vintage channel....hmmm.
I have schematics on file from Fender for over 30 different Fender Bassman models. Reissues included. Starting with a 5A6 to the blonde 6G6B to the AA165 blackface to the Bassman 10 to the 135 ultralinear Bassman to the Superbassman and into the modern FMIC imported reissues, and even a couple of odd hand wired custom shop models.
At 9:19 you referred to the JJ tube as being microphonic, the tubes in your hand are GT (Groove Tube). Is it JJ OR GT that usually go microphonic in combo amps. I know the JJ’s have a 6L6GC version available with Double Mica spacers in the top of the tube to reduce rattle in combo amps but I have no experience with them.

Lyle, you think it’s worth installing a mids pot in a Vox, especially if you’re use to using mids heavy pedals like tubescreamers when boosting? I was thinking about it, but I don’t know 🤷♀️ if it’s just adding another adjustment just for the sake of doing it? Maybe it’s better option for players that don’t use pedals?
@@PsionicAudio that begs the question, what is the sound of Vox? I own Vox Pathfinder 15/15Rs, Cambridge 15/30R, VR30R, AC10C1, and the AC4C1. So my perception of what a Vox sounds like may be different from guys who have played actual vintage Vox amps. And my perception is probably more top boost channel sounds vs. normal channel with only a single tone pot or the ef86 channels of the original early 60s Vox amps. Maybe the early vintage normal channel only AC30s had more mids. Just open questions from someone who only has experience with amps I actually own. My Cambridge 15/30 amps do have a mrb button (mids range boost). Which is interesting

Honestly, this is the kind of situation where someone qualified to do this wouldn't need such things, and someone who needs such things isn't qualified to do it. I'm far from the only tech who can do these mods well. But besides amps in general being dangerous to work on, Fender PCBs require equipment and experience that make them bad ideas for hobbyists.

Mine a looking a bit brown. But the Deluxe is a different animal from the other Fenders I've worked on. My question was more about intrigue, as I sit with the diagram, just understanding why you change some of the things, other than the quality of componenets.
That's a can of worms. Let's just say that there are differences but most of them aren't in play when it comes to guitar amps. Microprocessers, telecommunications, high current applications, etc, yes. In a guitar amp it's mostly a matter of tensile strength, though most lead-free solder as used in inexpensive production amps also handles heat and thermal changes poorly.

Most of the narrow panel Bassman’s from late 58 on had a 100k slope resistor and a 250pf/22nf/100nf tone stack. All linear pots too. It drives me crazy when “clones” copy the Fender schematic and claim it’s a “59”. Total bullshit. Even Fender got the reissue right. It’s probably the most accurate Bassman most people can buy. Your “half watt” carbon film looks like a one watt to me! They’re the same size as the one watt Xicon’s I have. I used to do a lot more repairs and didn’t mind any suggestions or watching videos of what someone wanted done. I can’t read minds and generally, guitar players don’t know how to explain what they’re after.

GT doesn’t make tubes. I haven’t rewatched the video but odds are they were “GT” relabeled JJs.

As I learned, it's best done on a terminal strip added between V1 and V2. Next time it will be done there for best component support.

The ones I've had in had the 10n/22n but had 56K slopes. There are three 1Ws in here, but my 1/2Ws are much larger than the stock 1/2Ws.
