    Found my way here through your collaboration with Billy. Really like how clear and thorough you are with these grammar points! Will definitely watch more of them!
    One question though about a specific use of 는데 that I don't think fits into any of the usages in this video: expecting the other person to react to what you say, or give background info on something you are going to follow-up with.
    For example:
    [entering a hotel reception] 방을 예약했는데요.
    [approaching my teacher/professor] 선생님, 드릴 말씀이 있는데요.
    [calling a hotel to book a room] 방을 예약하려고 하는데요.
    Is this also a correct way to use 는데(요)?

    • @KoreanJream
      @KoreanJream  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      안녕하세요? 반갑습니다!!! Welcome to my channel!!! 😍 Let's get to your question!
      All those fit with 03:10 "showing hesitation" to be more polite and less direct as well as "setting the background info" before the actual content.
      Instead of saying a full sentence "방을 예약했는데요, 제 방 주세요/열쇠 주세요/etc.", "선생님, 드릴 말씀이 있는데, 들어 주세요.", or "방을 예약하려고 하는데, 당장 예약해 주세요." with direct command or request, the speaker is ending at the background info without what s/he actually wants to say/ask/demand, leaving the rest to the listener.
      Hope this makes sense!!!

      @@KoreanJream Thank you for the answer! This is such a common structure that I hear all the time, but there are so many different situations to use it in @_@ I suppose I just have to get a feel of when to use it naturally through exposure.

    • @KoreanJream
      @KoreanJream  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jariahonen1914 Oh yes, it is REALLY common! That is why (으)ㄴ/는데 usagea are difficult to understand, but the more you see it, the easier it will get… and basically you can use it for everything (well, not EVERYTHING but pretty a lot, right?)… so I’d say pretty useful to play with!!! End a sentence with 데요… with the intention/reason you called or came to someone, and watch the magic of the other person taking up from there!!!

    Wow such a rich explanation of this, i have been having trouble with this concept for a while, this is the best explanation, and apparently it's not as easy or simple at the beginning, maybe that's why it has taken time for me to grasp it.

      Thank you so much for such kind feedback!!! 🙏🏼 And I’m so happy to hear it was helpful! You’re right about it being not simple or easy, and so many people have asked me about it! Since the form has expanded its meaning so much, it serves so many functions... which makes it really difficult to learn. 😔 If you pay attention, it will make more sense over time... And it is one of the most useful and versatile forms to know and use! ☺️

    I love your videos. They are really easy to comprehend. One question though, if 는데 is used in between 2 sentences as a connector, is it necessary to add 요 to make it sound more formal when you talk to strangers or let's say at your workplace? How about at the end of a sentence? I know we can add 요 then, but what about other more formal endings? Thankyou so much!!

    • @KoreanJream
      @KoreanJream  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for loving my videos, first of all. ❤️ About your question, you only add ~요 to make it polite when the sentence ends with those endings that are originally connectors but are also used at the end of a sentence such as ~(으)ㄴ/는데, ~어/아서, ~(으)니까, ~고, etc. When they are used within a complex sentence as a connector, you do not use ~요. In colloquial utterances, you could, but technically and in formal sentences or writings, you don't. Hope this answers your question!!!

    If I'm saying that I'm have something to do ,so that I can't go out or something
    Is it considered as telling a story??
    Let's say
    Ep : I have homeworks, that's why I can't go outside
    숙제가 있는데 밖에 못가요
    숙제가 있어서 빆에 못가요
    And also for giving suggestions,is it more like
    Ep : The weather outside is cold,put on a coat
    By using
    -밖에 날씨 추운데 코트입어
    This sentence is it mean by
    The weather outside is cold (why don't you) put on a coat??
    Is there some hidden meaning like (why don't you) by using this grammar to suggest something??
    Korean grammar is so difficult 😭

    • @KoreanJream
      @KoreanJream  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The second example of suggestion is perfect!!! 😍 That's exactly how you use ~(으)ㄴ/는데 to give reasons for your suggestion, so good job!!! 잘했어요! 👏
      The first example doesn't work. It's because the second clause (밖에 못 가요) is the result of the first cause (숙제가 있어서): because of that obvious cause and effect relationship between the two, ~아/어서 is the correct way. For it to be the setting for the story, it will have to be the background setting (time, place, previous story, etc.) for the upcoming event to happen rather than cause and effect.
      Because this has so many different meanings, it is definitely challenging for anyone. Don't get frustrated because you know what? You understood something perfectly today!!! Re-visit it later when you see it again in the K-dramas! 화이팅!

    Oh tysm! this very helpfully ,can i ask why the verb "know" is 아는데 but not 알았는데? Is that different? And wht the original verb is?

    • @KoreanJream
      @KoreanJream  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are very welcome! 천만에요! 😊
      The dictionary form is 알다. When the stem ends with ㄹ, ㄹ disappears and becomes 아는데. But for the past tense, you just change 어요 to 는데 and keep the past tense suffix 았/었. 알았어요 becomes 알았는데. I introduced the conjugation rules in the last video, so maybe you can watch the parts I explained past tense and ㄹ irregular. There's time stamp in the description, so it should be easy for you to find the parts you need! 😊

    What title the movie?

  • @KelahCash

    선생님, for the example from The King, when he says, "아닌데? 해 봤는데."
    What does that 1st part mean exactly? What verb is translated there to make "아닌데?"
    And for the second part, is he saying, "I HAVE tried it," as in, "Yes I HAVE dated."
    I saw a video that 봐 + Verb means, "Try *verb*"
    So I was wondering if the translation was similar to him saying, "But I have actually dated (in the past)." or "I have tried dating before." Would this be accurate? Or am I wrong?
    I hope I'm not confusing you. 😩😂

      Sorry, I've been really busy making my website and workbooks, so I'm now trying to catch up with the comments now that they are launched, as I just mentioned in the other comment too...
      아니다: to not be = used to say "you are wrong"
      아닌데? "you are wrong, though." to disagree!
      해 봤는데 is exactly how you understood, talking about the past experience, yes!!! 맞아요!!!

      @@KoreanJream that's not what i mean 🤣 i'm sorry if my sentences made you confused..
      Your explanation was very clear, but my brain can not memorized it all in one moment..
      미안해요 선생님 😃🙏
      근데 저는 선생님의 비디오를 제일 좋아합니다 because your explanation is very clear..honestly, i never met anyone that can explain clearer than you since i had been studying Korean by my self 🙏
      By the way, could you please give me some tips how to learn Korean language especially memorizing? There are so many Korean expressions and grammar there 😅 Because i had learnt Korean by myself since i was in junior high school and now i'm 27 y.o ...i couldn't take any courses outside, because it's too expensive in Indonesia..
      And especially my conversation was very awful because i didn't meet anyone that could speak Korean fluently. Thankyou (i'm sorry if my comment's too long)

      @@karenelisabeth4646 Oh, don't apologize for trying to say things in Korean! I am just happy the explanation wasn't what made it difficult! Yeah, there are multiple usages for this... You will see them in so many different situations and hopefully that gives you a better idea about when Korean speakers use the form. 미안해하지 마세요!!! 제 비디오 좋아해 주셔서 저도 너무 고마워요!!! 한국어 공부 계속 열심히 하세요. 파이팅!!!
      About tips, I would say finding a person who you can practice Korean with will be the best especially since you've been studying for a while. I bet you know enough grammar and basic vocab, and what you need may be actually using it. I don't know if you saw my last week's interview videos with my students, but one of them mentioned this app called HELLO TALK. She said it's a language exchange app where people find partners to practice language with. So maybe check it out!
      Also, there's an app called TEUIDA. It's a Korean speaking app, so that would help with your pronunciation and speaking. You can use the promo code DREAMJ and get 10% off their premium version, too.
      As for memorizing, I know people use Anki and Quizlet a lot, and find other people's resources to study with too. I also recommend write journals or at least couple sentences everyday with a couple of words you have learned that day. Repetition and Usage are the key!!!

      It’ll be translated as “I want to meet, but(=만나고 싶은데 as a connective ending within a sentence) I don’t have time...(=시간이 없는데 as a sentence ender when giving an hesitant answer the other person may not be happy to hear or to reject with a reason/an excuse) 😀
