H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... This is now the 150th week of our favorite classic game show (the final week will be 291). These episodes were taped on May 16, 1976 and first aired in early July of 1976 (July 5-9). Our three stalwart regulars are all in fine fettle, and this time they're joined by: ~~~Semi-regular Joyce Bulifant, who last appeared four weeks ago. This will be her 19th week (of 38), and she enjoys a 75% accuracy rating in the H/H match to this point, although that has to be taken within the context of the scarcity of data - she's had only 4 attempts, so that limits our ability to draw conclusions. But, we can safely conclude that Joyce is certainly capable of matching in the H/H! A quick review of Joyce's MG career: She made her debut way back in 1973 (episodes 96-100), and was assigned the fourth chair, a position she occupied until her sixth week, when she was shifted to the sixth seat for one week. When she returned for her seventh week, she was back in seat #4, but only for that week. On her next appearance, she occupied her now-familiar sixth seat where she remained for the remainder of her Match Game career, with the exception of her 20th week (776-780), when she swapped places with Mary Wickes (see below). Joyce's final appearance was in episode 1430, near the end of the program's run in 1979. ~~~Joey Bishop, returning for his third week (of 5). He last visited in episodes 696-700 and has yet to play the H/H. ~~~Finally, we have the Match Game debut of Mary Wickes. This is interesting to me, because we're over the halfway mark of the series' total run, and it feels like we've gotten to know all the major players, but here's a new celebrity panelist who becomes a significant part of Match Game history, with a total of 14 weeks on the panel. (This puts her in a tie for the 15th position on the list of celebrities who made the most appearances on "Match Game '7x." To give you an idea, here are the other celebs with 14 weeks: Jo Ann Pflug, Avery Schreiber, and Patty Duke Astin.) Frankly, I'm glad. Generally I don't pay too much attention to the many "one-and-done" celebs they stick in the fourth seat because I know they're "just visiting" and not really a part of the MG "family." They often aren't that great at the game, and it just feels like they're "filler," a pretty face to occupy the seat and draw some attention to the show. Which isn't a bad thing. Some of the one-week guest celebs are entertaining, and some are decent at the game, but it's hard to get invested when you know you'll never see them again. So I'm looking forward to getting to know Mary, and I have high expectations since not only is she going to stick around for 14 weeks, but she also gets "promoted" to that crazy, magical sixth seat for five of her weeks, and I feel it takes a certain personality to succeed in that position. This week, I'm rooting for Joyce to deepen her H/H stats (and break that perma-tie with Jo Anne Worley). I'm hoping that Mary turns out to be a good player and gets chosen for the H/H fairly quickly. It would be nice to eventually see a new addition to the big leader board. I'm always up for seeing regulars Brett and Charles participating in the H/H. Together, they've played 112 times (to Richard's 438!). In fact, let's combine Brett and Charles's stats: Charles + Brett (52 wins in 112 attempts = 46.4 % accuracy). Compare that to Richard's: 179 wins in 438 attempts = 40.9% accuracy. Clearly there's almost no way the contestants in 1976 could know these stats (back in the 1970s, the only way would be to watch every single episode when it aired and keep records), but the fact that most contestants keep choosing Richard leads me to believe that they think he is the best at the head-to-head match (when he's actually towards the bottom of the list), which is an interesting insight into the world of perception vs the world of reality. Anyway, here's hoping that this week Match Game serves up plenty of ___________! ~~~Today's action: (Brief commentary: I already love Mary Wickes! She's delightful, funny, and a decent player right from the start. Totally fits in with the MG panel and vibe, and I can see her in the sixth seat!) Our champion didn't even need her second-round question to win her second game. Today's audience match question: "Joey _________" (My thoughts: Bishop, ???, ???) The celebs: Brett (Bishop), Richard (Lewis), and Charles (Faye) -- These suggestions illustrate why I don't care for questions that involve names, nearly 50 years after the fact. I honestly don't know who Joey Lewis and Joey Faye were. The choice: Bishop (The contestant says "I love Joey Bishop!" But she never called on him for a suggestion!) The answers: Brown, Heatherton, Bishop -- (At least I'd heard of Joey Heatherton.) The champion pockets another $500, thank to Brett (and Joey). Now comes the H/H. Since she won $5,000 with Brett yesterday, I have to expect she'll choose her again. Yes, Brett has another conniption fit! (But it's only a mild one.) This time, I went back a little further to find Brett's ten most recent attempts. The search took me back to episode 573. Of those ten, she matched six, so her recent history is a good deal better than her overall cumulative record. This is Brett's 60th head-to-head match, incidentally. (Charles is third in that department at 53.) Today's H/H question: "_______ Writer" (Several possibilities. I'll say typewriter which was the most common, generic choice back in 1976. I also thought of screenwriter and ghostwriter, but those seem a bit more narrow-focused or specific, and I think broad and general is usually the safest bet for the head-to-head.) Brett doesn't have an immediate answer. She looks off into the distance to contemplate before peeking in Charles' direction. The champion lacks that smile of certainty that she had yesterday. Clearly, today's question seems tougher to them than yesterday's was. Brett is struggling and trying to decide. She really takes this part of the game super-seriously. Gene barely gets the question out before the contestant blurts "ghost writer." She sounds determined and confident. The camera catches Brett, and it's clear she didn't write that answer. It looks like she's beating herself up because she presumably considered "ghost," but went a different way. As if the case more often than not, I matched Brett: "Type." No match this time. Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Fannie - 52.4% (11 wins in 21 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.7% (25 wins in 60 attempts). Richard - 40.9% (179 wins in 438 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 746, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
Glad I clicked on, excellent debut of Mary Wickes she was on 🔥. Here's a Patti Deutsche answer for ya, you could see her chin just like Charles just said
I agree with Brett on this one. "Ghost" writer would seem too out in left field to me too if I had thought of it. My first though was "type"writer, like Brett.
The Joey Faye comedy routine with the funny sneezes Mary Wickes described sounds hilarious. I did a quick search on here, but the closest I came to was a baby kangaroo sneezing lol.
When she took Gene's pulse and looked at her watch, I was reminded of one of my all-time favorite Groucho Marx lines. He was playing an impostor Vet, and I think it was A Day at the Races. The big lady passed out and he grabbed her wrist and looked at his wrist watch, ostensibly playing his role and checking her pulse. "Well?" asked a couple of anxious Marx Brother cohorts. Omg. One time I opened a can of tuna and was eating it right out of the can. I noticed what looked like glass. I freaked out. I called the company. They told me not to worry. They said it was Struvite, a protein from the fish. They sent me free coupons and a pamphlet on it. In 50 years of eating tuna, I had never seen that before. Very strange.
brett is such a pretty lady, with or without glasses. she looks especially beautiful in this episode too, i dont get why they always rag on her looks:(

Mary fits right in. This show makes me feel like I'm ten again.
Richard is having the time of his life sitting next to Mary! I've never seen him laugh so much on this show.
Mary is a breath of fresh and hilarious air. Glad she's making Richard laugh.
She was great!
It's so cute how much he laughed!
Richard was right; Mary Wickes was a funny lady. I'm surprised she wasn't on more often.
