The Trouble With Ángels and Where Ángels Go, Trouble Follows. Mary was hysterical! Great actress!
Not to mention Sister Act. When I first saw her in that I got the biggest kick.
@@olivegreenpants7153"Dirt floors, no electricity now those were Nuns!" - Sister Mary Lazarus, Sister Act (1992)
Also, the house keeper in "White Christmas".
She was definitely fantastic in White Christmas !
.
❤
She deserved a lifetime achievement award
She's a wonderful actress!! I remember as a kid in the 1960s
She was that familiar face that showed up and added a much needed spice to whatever the recipe. From childhood through adulthood I always enjoyed her performance.
As was Hope Emerson. The voice of Elsie the cow.
"It took 10,000 men to replace me!" Mary Wickes in "White Christmas". I loved this actress. Always wanted to be like her; she was never afraid to speak her mind.
Me too! I love that movie:D when i found out she was the model for cruella i was so excited that i would get to do an episode on her!
We don't give enough credit to the female character actresses. They were the feminists of their era by the way they spoke up. Eve Arden is another that comes to mind. Love her! @@Dizographies
You mean you produced this segment on her? Researched her, put together this show?@@Dizographies
Never were truer words spoken.

She was funny af in Sister Act and Hunchback of Notre Dame!! Growing up in the 90s kids got to see and appreciate a lot of older entertainers because the worked throughout their senior years and lent their voices to many animations 😂 😂
Thank you, Mary....you'll never be forgotten.
She's sensational in Now, Voyager too! She plays the private nurse of Gladys Cooper's character and her scenes with Bette Davis are terrific
Bette’s line to her is perfect “Dora I suspect that you’re a treasure.”
I couldn’t agree more. She was amazing.
I agree, I also loved her in Now, Voyager…priceless!
"Dora, a suspect you're a treasure."
@@Bakerlongisland87As uttered by Bette Davis, this was one of the best lines that ever came out of Hollywood.
She was seemingly everywhere and brought comedic sparkle to so many movies❤️
I remember seeing her in that episode of "I Love Lucy", where she's the ballet instructor, and is trying to teach Lucy how to dance. That scene was HILARIOUS, and IMO, one of the funniest ones of the entire show!
That dance instructress was strict
One of my favorite character actors.
The other is Thelma Ritter.
For over 70 years, f either one of these wonderful ladies was in a movie or play, I knew that, no matter how good or bad the show was, if Mary, or Thelma, was on the screen, that scene was gonna be dynamite.
RIP, sweet ladies, and thanx so very very much, for the magic, music, and memories.
Thanks so much for this delightful tribute to a performer who added real value to every role she took. And I especially appreciate the nod to Mary's biography, "Mary Wickes: I Know I've Seen That Face Before" :)
Thank YOU so much for commenting! We really enjoyed making this video, and I agree Mary is such an amazing actress! Your book is on my list of must reads! I can't wait to learn more about her, and I encourage everyone watching/reading to check it out too :)
Never heard of it; I'll check it out. Thanks.
I read Mary’s biography, it is a must read when it comes to Hollywood biographies. She was a close friend of Lucille Ball. Incredible actress!
She was a great character actress with fantastic comedic timing
Even when she was being herself on the Match Game she was sharp as a tack and charming at the same time.
She was so good in the Sister Act movies!
Better than those horrid movies.
I love her in White Christmas! I watch it every Christmas. She was an astounding, versatile actress who excelled at every part she played!
I'm 57 and she was in/on just about everything I watched.. even as a youngster she made a comic impression on me in the "Trouble With Angels / Where Angels Go Trouble Follows" movies.. I always knew she'd make me laugh after seeing them.
Mary Wickes never fails to deliver a wonderful performance.
Mary Wickes was a real icon to over a generation of women, most of whom were unmarried or widowed. She showed how these ladies could lead enjoyble and productive lives even though society hadn't dealt them the best of hands in life.
What an amazing career! I can't remember a time when I didn't see her work as I grew up!
She is always a favorite when she appears on screen. Loved her!
Whenever I saw Miss Wickes' name in the credits of a movie or TV show, I knew I was in for a treat.
Totally agree
"If I weren't such a mean old biddy I'd break down and cry!" line was the hook that made me a huge fan for life! Her self-deprecating humor was her magic! She always reminded me of one of my favorite aunts too. R.I.P. Dear Ladies. ❤❤
Mary Wickes and Reta Shaw - - Two of the GREAT Lions of character acting.
She was never anything but brilliant. Her scene with Jimmy Durante in _The Man Who Came To Dinner_ was one of the highest points in cinema comedy!
I grew up watching her, acting in television and movie's, and subconsciously, adsorbing her. Later, about 20 years ago, I finally got to see "The Man Who Came To Dinner", and I thought wow, I know her from somewhere. Then I seen her in that episode, of 'Sanford And Son', where she's a maid. I then thought of her, in one of my favorite comedy movies, 'The Trouble With Angels'. She's been there for me, in bit parts, my whole life☺️!!!!
Wow! She was quite the actress! I have never heard anything biographical about her before. She was in a lot of things that I have seen. Thank you for sharing!
I absolutely adore Mary Wickes! She has been a big part of my childhood on tv and my adult years in music. Im so happy she didnt choose law. I only wish I had told her before her passing.
She's has always been one of my favorite actress'... I knew it Mrs. Wicks was in the productions it was going to be good... Thanks you Mary for the many years of entertainment... 🎉
Loved her in every single film of hers I've ever seen. And I love that she was working right up almost til her death; her Aunt March in Little Women is my favourite of all the portrayals through the years. It was pretty much her last onscreen role before her death, too. Remarkable til the end.
I loved her in the "Dennis the Menace" TV series. She played a single, middle-age, woman who was always looking for a man, so funny. 😂🤣👏👏👏
My favorite moment of her work on-screen: “White Christmas”, when Bing Crosby kisses her! That five seconds of pure fun always makes me laugh!
Loved her in everything she did...from Now Voyager to Sister Act
What a wonderful talent. I always loved when she showed up.
She's one of those actors that you always rejoice to see in a svene because she's dependable, you know its going to be a quality performance regardless of any other factor. Ms. Mary was a comforting addition to any casting, i imagine.
A National Treasure she is! ❤
When I first started watching this, I was like, "I know that voice well and I've seen this woman a lot." I didn't realize how much I'd seen and heard her. What a career!
Mary Wickes is one of those actors I grew up with. She was everywhere! I liked her in "Destry," the Audie Murphy film.
Loved Mary Wickes! Her "timing" was EXCELLENT! 🙂
My favorite of her roles was as Grandma in POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE. Seeing her play Meryl Streep's grandmother and Shirley MacLaine's mother was hysterical. She has the best exit line that I have ever heard: "Howdy has worms!"
My favorite line of Mary's from Postcards is "Go ahead cry, you'll pee less!" 😂
She was based on Debbie Reynolds mother who was a rural Midwest woman.
It's based on Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher
The lady deserves more love, she was a TITAN of her craft. I love the old movies, and when I spot her in one I know that it's going to be a right good flick.
She deserves more love......
Thank you so much for this segment on Mary Wickes I had no idea the body of her work ❤
Thank you for my comment. I was very fortunate enough to talk to her on the phone. She was working on a Jerry Lewis telethon and I phoned in and got to talk to her😄👍😄👍😄
I had the pleasure of working on Nunsense at the Coconut Grove Theatre with her. She and the rest of the cast were very kind to us, the crew.
How wonderful ❤️ she was also a close friend to Doris Day as she was in three or four of her movies 🎬 Mary used to say at Doris guest 🏠 house at Carmel
Thank you so much for this particular Discography ! Love Mary Wickes ! Just one of those actresses that the moment she walks on the screen becomes the focal point of the scene ! The warmth in spite of wise cracks that she projected in virtually every thing she had ever done was part of what makes her one of my favourite actresses of all time.
She was on an episode of MASH, she played a very high ranking nurse. I thought her character should have been recurring
She is fantastic in The Man Who Came to Dinner one of my favourite films.
Always one of my favorite character actors of all time.
One of her final performances was as a nosy landlord on "Columbo." She was still funny, still delightful.
She was such a legend. I remember watching the trouble with angels when I was a kid. Everything I have ever seen her in has been wonderful actually. ❤
Mary was also on "Dennis the Menace" as old maid "Miss Cathcart". Mary always brought something extra to her roles!!
Always a fan of Mary Wicks. First time I saw her was in The Man Who Came To Dinner. Mary was just Sensational in everything she did.
Loved her through the years! You always knew you would get a fine performance from Ms Wickes
Mary Wikes was an excellent actress!
Thank you for creating a great tribute to this fabulous actress! Careful not to trip on “alma mater” around 7:49 😊
“Alta mader” 😅😅
I can recall seeing this woman in countless roles for just about all of my life, but I don’t think I ever even knew her name. She was quite prolific and always enjoyable- a stalwart of the entertainment world
I was always a huge fan of Mary Wickes. Loved her dearly
Ahhhh, Mary Lazarus in Sister Act, (“this is a sin, this is a wicked indulgence. Didn’t they have any butter pecan?” 🤣) I loved her in anything she did. I never knew she did Cruella’s voice. So cool.
She is amazing!!! She didn’t do cruellas voice though, she was the live action model:)
Fun actress. Great comical timing. Check out her great scene as a landlady in "Columbo: Suitable for Framing"
Always one of my favorites
I loved her in Paul Newman's, "Nobody's Fool, Aged to Perfection". She played the bartender at a little dive bar in a small town. Everybody who was anybody in Hollywood at the time was in the film: Jessica Tandy in one of her last roles, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and a very young Dylan Walsh. I watch it every year around Thanksgiving. It's a classic.
I got to see her live 9at a very great distance) when she toured with Vincent Price and Michelle Lee in Damn Yankees in 1980 at the Starlite Theatre, Kansas City, MO. Great memory!
A true Gem to the acting profession. From a child to now at 66 I enjoy this wonderful ladies work, like her other wonderful actresses Eve Arden and Thelma Ritter. I would also include Nancy Walker. What stars they truly were.
I read Steve's book. It was quite good. Mary had a fascinating career as a character actress. One minor role not mentioned in this video was her appearance on Dennis the Menace.
Miss Cathcart who thought that she could sing. I remember when she chased the birds out of the trees with her singing. Thanks for remembering her.
I loved her work.❤
She was on Sanford and Son as a temporary maid. She was great!!!
this is pretty well-presented. I'm reading the Taravella book right now.
She was simply a true Gem!
I grew up watching Mary and she was a great Actress 👍 👌 ☺
You din’t mention her role on the old Dennis the menace tv show! She was hilarious!
I know! I've seen a few clips, and she is so good! I just didn't have enough time :(
I can't believe it! Your forgot her appearance as a landlady in Columbo: Suitable for Framing. She takes Peter Falk on a guided tour of her photo album when he is desperate for one piece of information: "Oh, that's my nephew... this is a good one..." It is so funny and I'm pretty sure it was mostly ad-libbed.
I LOVE MARY WICKES WITH ALL MY HEART AND ALWAYS WILL NEVER GIVEN A BAD PERFORMANCE
She did wonderful work. One of those great support actors, in the great days of Hollywood, who made the movies even better
Just finished reading the book referenced in this video. It was outstanding.
Oh. My gosh. I never knew that Mary Wicks was the iconic CRUELLA DeVile.
Where have I been???
Father Dowling Mystery
Shoudn’t any biography state that she was one of the very closest of Lucille Ball’s best friends? They travelled together. She was family. She played the French ballet instructor in the famous I Love Lucy ballet episode, for heaven’s sake.
I did mention it at the end. Unfortunately we try to stick to careers unless their careers are so short we end up having time for relationships. Mary’s career was anything but short, and I really really wish we could have gotten into it. Hopefully people read the book I mentioned because its a really really good read!!
To not be overplayed by Lucy was an achievement.
Mary as the ballet Kommandant still makes me laugh.
I know, right? Just thinking about Mary upstaging Lucy makes me laugh. She really was a woman’s woman.
She also bought Lucy and Desi’s house in San Fernando valley.
@@watchersmith806 If you're talking about their home on the corner of Devonshire Blvd. and Corbin Streets, do you know when Mary Wickes lived there? Desi and Lucy were there from about 1943-1955. They sold it to Jane Withers (or so I read) and then no one seems to know who else owned it. It was torn down in 1976, to build a housing development and no trace of the original footprint exists today. Tuba St. runs through what used to be their property. The last owner had no idea they were selling a piece of Hollywood history to a developer. That corner is so ugly today!
Rest in Peace Mary Wickes 2021
Wickes died in 1995.
Many years ago, I saw her on stage at the Pantages Theatre in L. A. in the play ‘Oklahoma!’ She played Aunt Eller. It was quite a thrill to watch this wonderful actress in person, doing expectedly superior character acting, for which she was so well known. (I also loved her as Miss Cathcart on the original ‘Dennis the Menace’, occasionally breaking a glass when she hit the high notes singing. She was hilarious.)
She was Aunt Eller in the 1979 revival at the Palace Theatre in NYC. The show was filmed and the Library at Lincoln Center has a copy in its "Special Collections".
As an Okie from Muskogee, I would call that perfect casting.
I saw that on Broadway in '81@@gljm
My grandmother was a good friend of hers. Incredible lady! ❤
Yes, I agree with the comment far below. Her character of the desperate , horny spinster, Miss Cathcart on Dennis the Menace was a comic gem!
I always loved watching her! She was wonderful always.
She did a TV pilot with Bette Davis, I believe it was called "The Decorator." It's on TH-cam.
I thought it was very entertaining.
I thought that a good pilot and would have had possibilities. The men in grey suits clearly had other ideas. Quick Profit before audience approval and enjoyment know doubt.
,
Yes, it's brilliant. Should have went to series.
Love her in Now Voyager
She was wonderful!
Great video. Always enjoyed her on movies and TV shows.
A National movie treasure! The most familiar star whose name we didn't know!
We were delighted when Mary Wickes showed up on an episode of Columbo “Suitable For Framing”. Always a scene stealer in everything she did.
✨Thank You! ✨🥰
Loved her episode of MASH when she had the hots for ole ferret face
Loved her come on line to him: "You have your own place, or do you live with your folks?" 😂
I'm pleasantly surprised and shocked!! Did not know she did cruella’s voice. I have seen her in I Love Lucy and there are no remnants of Cruella’s voice in her later characters. Brilliant!
She wasn't Cruella's voice. That was Betty Lou Gerson. Mary was only the MODEL for the character.
Same here! And I think I saw 101 DALMATIANS™ 50 times.
Unreal. Where have I been?
My apologies I meant to put Malificent
Well. No wonder I didn't know Mary Wikes did the voice for CRUELLA DeVil

In Trouble With Angels and Sister Act, she played a bus driving nun..loved her in all her movies..watch The Man Who Came To Dinner!
Wow! Never knew this much about her. Just from episodes if I Love Lucy. And i had forgotten about her in Sister Act. She was definitely underrated
An absolute treasure. There needs to be lifetime Oscars for the character actors who make everything better.... currently, Jane Greer comes to mind....
Always loved her. A great vid and tribute! Thank you ❤
Rare person that everyone liked. Combined I have seen White Xmas and Trouble with Angels 60x.
No one ever like her or will there be . She always stole the scene what ever she was in.
I really enjoyed this.
Great woma. Great acress. Loved her since White Christmas, 1950s.
I have all loved her. Thank you for this piece.
Sorry. I met, I have always loved her. Thank you.
I could see her as a Lawyer!!!
Her last movie onscreen appearance was the Susan Sarandon "Little Women" movie, according to the special features on the disc.
It's a crime that Mary Wickes never got nominated for a Supporting Oscar or perhaps more Emmys....She was Very good.
I remember growing up that she also played Josephine the plumber on those Comet cleanser commercials.
No, that was Jane Withers.
