“Eia musa!” For the last five years I have been working on the reconstruction of this instrument and its context (iconography, written references, archaeology, repertoire, technique, etc.). Although the project is by no means finished, I am sharing a sample of the results so far.
I am especially grateful to Medieval Music Besalú, to the Obradoiro de gaitas Seivane, who built this instrument, and to the Monastery of Poblet, where the video was shot.

1) THE INSTRUMENT
As we gather from 12th- and 13th-century depictions of bagpipes, the instruments from the period lacked the shoulder drones -a feature common to many present-day instruments- having in addition multiple-bore chanters (in my reconstruction a melodic pipe with a parallel drone). These chanters were probably activated by single reeds.
2) THE PIECE
The medieval musical theorist Johannes de Grocheio (fl. ca. 1300) advances that the instrumental genre known as the 'ductia' was comprised of repeated melodic phrases ('puncta') with open and close endings the maximum number of which was three ("numerum vero punctorum in ductia [...] ad tria posuerunt"). This instrumental piece included in the 13th-century Manuscrit du Roi that is titled 'danse' perfectly matches Gocheio’s description. About the function of the ductia, we learn from Grocheio that it was commonly used in "ductiis et choreis", which implies that they were used to accompany some kind of choral dance. As it is revealed by late 13th- and 14th-century depictions, choral dances were commonly led by the music of a bagpipe.

Durante los últimos cinco años he trabajado en la reconstrucción de este instrumento y todo su contexto (iconografía, referencias escritas, arqueología, repertorio, técnica, etc.) y, aunque el viaje es largo y todavía falta por andar, comparto con vosotros una primera muestra de los resultados.

1) EL INSTRUMENTO
Las gaitas en los siglos XII y XIII, cuando empezaron a ser representadas con frecuencia, carecían de los bordones de espalda habituales en muchas de las gaitas modernas y funcionaban seguramente con lengüetas simples. Además, como norma general y según se observa en la iconografía, constaban de punteros con taladro múltiple, en este caso tubo melódico y bordón móvil.
2) LA PIEZA
El teórico musical medieval Johannes de Grocheo (fl. ca. 1300), comenta que el género instrumental denominado 'ductia' constaba de frases melódicas repetidas ('puncta') con sendos finales abierto y cerrado, cuyo número, a diferencia de la ‘estampie’, no debía ser mayor de tres ("numerum vero punctorum in ductia [...] ad tria posuerunt"). Esta pieza instrumental, incluida en el Manuscrit du Roi (s. XIII) y que lleva la rúbrica 'danse', encaja perfectamente con la descripción de Grocheo. Sobre la función de la 'ductia', Grocheo añade que este tipo de piezas eran comunes en "ductiis et choreis", de modo que se habrían utilizado para acompañar algún tipo de danza coral. Como se observa en la iconografía de los siglos XIII y XIV, éstas eran frecuentemente guiadas por la música de una gaita. - เพลง

Tras muchos años, décadas, toda una vida, amando la gaita( incluso siendo tan osado de atreverme a tocarla…mal…pero me atrevo), he llegado a la conclusión,casi definitiva, que ese tipo de gaita que tocas tan excelentemente, era la gaita de pura tradición continental….las gaitas atlánticas ( gallega, asturiana, escocesa), son una evolución más cercana en la historia. Es decir, punteros muy cónicos, roncos y pallones con mucho timbre para empastar con el puntero y tocar en exteriores.
La gaita que tocas en este vídeo tiene capacidad de empastar con múltiples instrumentos, de tocar en interiores…ENHORABUENA por este precioso vídeo!

Actually, one of the pipes is variable drone. Sometimes called a counter-chanter or contra-chanter. It can play only 2 notes, which makes it a drone rather than a melody pipe.

Does this instrument has one reed or two?
Is this just a Boha styled to look like some medieval examples, or has additional research gone into it that sets it apart? Where did the terminology "musa" come from? The musa I'm familiar with is a conical chanter 'loud pipe.'
