    Just want to say thank you for always including competition footage showing what you are teaching actually works when the opponent is fully resisting and the stakes are high. There is a lot of garbage on youtube showing theoretical passes/guards/submissions with no proof to back it up. Keep up the excellent work!

      craigdanielmaceacher Thanks best compliment I can receive. I’m very big on shit actually working. I’m always frustrated when I see someone post a technique that is completely ineffective and people get all worked up and praise. The foundation of jiu jitsu is that everything needs to work against resistance.

      JonThomasBJJ yeah even the move your showing! I don't like these moves just for the plain fact that a competitor must be insane to think he's going to grab my pants without a grip fight or any sort of form of resistance Plus in MMA you'll get an up kick in the face!

    Awesome Jon! Toreando is my favorite pass too - The thing I have the most trouble with is when the bottom player goes into a standard X guard when I'm passing on the feet. Thanks again!

      TenaciousG me too. Especially when I step over their leg in De La Riva and then they hook the leg I just stepped over with Similar to this th-cam.com/video/ge-gNHhxsfs/w-d-xo.html
      TBH I get caught by many entries so any help is appreciated

    Nice video like always and top notch editing. The far side collar sleeve videos really helped me play with that position a lot. And am now using it as my main guard. Now as for the torreando my issues aren’t so much doing the pass itself or setup but more of the completion of the pass and how to limit the scramble. I find people turtling a lot which isn’t bad but trying to limit the scramble game.

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joshua Chavez Hey! Yeah I can do a follow up video on some common finish issues. The scramble is a big aspect of finishing the pass. The set up is one thing but, many variations of how they defend when you get through. I often like the north south finish variation or I switch my arm over their back and drop. Hard to explain through text. I will do a video on that soon great question.

  • @patsycards

    Thanks very much Jon!
    There’s one technique I am running into when battling open guard - say you try to make a grip on the inside of opponents leg in his open guard. Sometimes that might be a bait for him to then attack that arm by pulling at your elbow to pull your hand in, and then move into an omoplata/reverse armbar. How do you prevent or stay away from getting your arm taken like that?
    Thanks!

    • @jstar6543
      @jstar6543 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      iiddyy don't give him your arm grip fight only move when you have a good grip and position stick to the basics it will keep you safe!

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      iiddyy hey good question, so if you are standing, it’s going to be really hard for them to pull you in for arm bar or anything like that. If I am down and I have my knee up in center it’s hard for them to pull my elbow in. Also once to you start the pass around legs they can really pull you into any position and it’s hard to break your grip. So you are pretty safe from that.

    JonThomas hey man great video like always :)
    i have a question about walking to legdrag from the toreando pass when he frames and u cant get in the space ? do you do it ? or do u prefer the collar grip for that one?

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Omya BJJ Hey great question I can do a video talking about what to do when the guy keep his knee tight which is either north south, or I will switch my near arm to pushing on his knee to open the space to finish. Actually if you look at the toreando video clip in this video where Leandro does the knee on belly finish. You will see him switch his hand to the knee after the initial toreando so he can push that space open. Hope that helps and makes sense.

    Really great video, thanks. I struggle when they have both sleeves, you toreando and they sit up with it, controlling your near side sleeve to recover. Do you have a solution to that problem? Many thanks.

    What's the best way to clear the arm frames on the legs after you've stepped around your opponent's legs.

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Pacheco so the arm frame will either be on your leg or on your shoulder if you go back with your leg they can’t frame the leg then they frame the shoulder. To weaken their shoulder frame I stay in high posture because it’s harder for them to frame you and when they try it usually opens their elbow knee space. Look at the part in this video where I show the high posture finish. Hope that helps some. I’ll cover it in future video too

    • @chrispacheco52
      @chrispacheco52 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I think I understand. I immediately drop my shoulder down to make pressure. Essentially throwing myself into the frames.

    I also agree with tenaciousg about getting put in x guard and closed guard a lot. I remember you and Keenan Cornelius saying closed and x guard are the worst guards to get put in but I'm still unsure on how to prevent getting put in them. I particularly get caught with an entry to x guard when I step over their leg in DLR similar to this

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aaron Bartolome I think so, the problem is pants often slide up the legs when you start fighting it’s super common. Which is why it needs to be accounted for when developing your toreando techniques.

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      MindOfNoMind If they break your grips and you are in spider toreando is not going to be realistic option for you in that situation

    • @AspiringSpaceWizard
      @AspiringSpaceWizard 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JonThomasBJJ sorry i should have explained better. I didnt mean so much as the doing the pass, more so just getting back some sort of grip control after they do that "kick/stomp" break and your in that stretched position. You actually ended up answering my question in one of your other videos about the throw by pass (leandro style)
