I was taken from my mom when I was a kid and spent two years in foster care before my dad got custody. Years later, someone called CPS because I wasn't being treated for alopecia (literally just hair loss, did not require treatment). When a caseworker showed up at my house to talk to me, a kid who had been in the foster system, I was terrified that I was about to be taken away from my dad. What I'm saying is, if you care about a child's wellbeing, please don't traumatize them over parenting disagreements.

      [CW: child abuse, violence, gaslighting]
Even though my mom broke the cycle of abuse, I come from a family of abusive people and criminals and have spent a lot of time with survivors of abuse as an adult.
One of my good friends got epilepsy from his time in foster homes because of physical beatings.
I have met young people who explicitly told me that they won't talk about the abuse they experience with mandated reporters because they don't want to be put into the foster care system.
When my mom was abused in the 1960s - 1970s and tried to run away, the police would find her and put her in jail and then she had to go to court. The police and judge all told her what a bad, ungrateful daughter she was and how great her parents were.
The system is broken and has been broken for a long time, and vulnerable children are the ones who suffer the most.

Your short tirade on whether or not Tucker's recommendation is satirical is an important aspect of how conservatives speak. Everything is simultaneously communicating a serious intent but said in a way that they can back out with an "I was just kidding!" if anyone tries to make them face consequences, because they want to get their way without having to back it up. "What I want but not what you want" is probably the most succinct GOP slogan possible.

A Karen who lived next door to my sister-in-law called CPS to accuse my family of child abuse. After living in the same building for 20 years she didn't like hearing the regular noise that comes along with 2 kids even though the kids are relatively quiet (as much as kids can be). The kids are not mimes obviously, but there is no TV in the apartment and they're in bed by 9pm every night. The neighbor was retired and spent all her time blazing it up in her apartment, getting high and nit-picking the entire apartment floor. My sister-in-law is a stay-at-home mom and spends every minute with her kids, teaching them to read by age 3. She obviously spends every ounce of energy raising her kids in a way she thinks gives them the best chance to be happy, well-adjusted, confident, and taking advantage of their full potential. The neighbor called CPS saying that she thinks the kids are neglected. When the agent came by and sat with her family he apologized for having to come out, waste their time, and make the kids nervous. He said that she obviously filed a false report to try to intimidate my family and said that this unfortunately was not uncommon. Point being, CPS has a vital role to play in protecting kids and families. Using them as a weapon to make a point can cause real problems for the families they are meant to protect. If a person has a problem with people around them, using their love for their kids as leverage is really despicable.

Sadly, there are very few firm firm written laws about what CPS must or may not do. It often comes down to individuals. The worker is too busy, has a false belief that the abuse is not 'bad enough', is racist and always thinks parents of colour are harmful ... too easy is it for innocent parents to lose their needlessly traumatized children, and for helpless children to die at the hands of a parent after multiple child abuse reports and even evidence having been seen.

[CW: ableism, abuse of disabled adults and children, violence and murder]
Ableism is rampant in public institutions.
A lot of nondisabled people go into special education to have power over us (I am neurodivergent, disabled, and hard of hearing).
I had a friend in college who was blind with a degenerative condition, and she was majoring in special ed. with an emphasis in visual impairments.
The sighted professors all got together and told her they had agreed that her condition was progressing too fast and she would be "too blind" to help any students.
She was a year and half a semester through the program, but who was going to believe her? A poor, blind, Latina, first-generation college student vs. every single special ed. professor.
You can also look up the cases of special ed. teachers and aides using deadly force on disabled students, like Max Benson.
In my state, Illinois, our current governor had to issue an executive order to stop public school staff from keeping disabled students in "locked isolation rooms."
This is a human rights issue. We (disabled people) are the largest minority group in the world: at least 20% of the global population. I want us to join together to stop the abuse some day.

      @@wmdkitty Dear Shawna,
While I agree that CPS is good in theory, they need to change curtain practices. They act like all parents are bad for not ‘following the book’ parenting. Children are children and such sometimes leave a room in a mess, which is a big thing CPS pick up on.
Also CPS interview children about their parents using a lot of leading questions, or questions so ambiguous that, as a child, anyone can agree with a statement that, while the child doesn’t see it that way, they decide it requires looking into. When they ‘look into’ things, they tear apart every part of the parents life from workplace to social life, this can include interviewing your workplace and friends.
Also if you work with children or anybody who could be deemed venerable, you can not work during the time the CPS is looking into your case, can be months if not years. Not only that but due to the negative reputation it causes, you can lose a lot of work because of it.
Think before you speak, or what would stop someone who doesn’t like you from causing all that damage with no repercussions.

People are arguing his statements are clearly “satire”, interestingly enough, but I see nothing on the show indicating that it’s “entertainment” or that it’s meant to be an opinion piece. I’m not seeing indicators like on The Onion and other satire websites that it’s a discussion for entertainment only. I’m not hearing words like “I think”, “I feel”, “my opinion is”, etc. I’m not hearing any inflection in his voice that implies sarcasm or joking.
All I see is a “news” moniker on his screen, a hapless man talking about something as if he’s an expert on it, and people who actually would watch Fox News taking it to heart, especially since many of them have been conditioned into believing that they can only trust information that comes from conservative media.

It's only satire if they get called out too loudly or clapped back at too hard. That's modern Right wing media 101, the lesson right after never announcing or declaring an op-ed and making everything visually look like it might be passable news program (provided you're deaf or an idiot, but still).

    • @Bacteriophagebs
      @Bacteriophagebs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Stephen Colbert delivered all of his satire completely deadpan, except when he messed up.
That said, here's the thing about Tucker: like Flat-Earthers, Anti-Vaxxers, QAnon, and many religious people, it's impossible to tell if it's satire or not because some people are actually _that_ stupid. No matter how insane, idiotic, or out-of-touch something such a person says, there's a very real chance that they might truly believe it.
In many cases, what started as satire might very well become real in that person's mind. People like that crave attention and validation. If they say something satirically, but then get attention for it, they'll convince themselves they believe it. That's supposedly what happened with the 9/11 "Truther" movement, in fact.
Then, once they've decided they believe something, they will _not_ go back. Convincing someone that something they believe is wrong is nearly impossible. The more you try, the harder they hold onto their belief. All you can normally do is call them out and show the non-believers how ridiculous the believers are.
You can't make a believer into a rational person, but you can keep rational people from becoming believers.

Sometimes I wonder how lawyers (paid large sums) can bring themselves to defend defendants who are obviously, laughably guilty, support arguments that are based on misconceptions and fervently insist that the jury's sense of reality which makes the defendant's guilt unquestionable is itself questionable. Then you listen to Tucker Carlson and you understand. Anyone can do it. You just have to start with absurdly oversimplified premises that apply to different situations and extrapolate wildly into an unrelated situation while ignoring all other context.

    • @KnakuanaRka

A lawyer doesn’t have to believe or support someone to defend them in court. Their role in defense is to make sure the prosecutor does their job; they check if the prosecutor’s arguments are valid and claims are well-defended, and ensure that everything is done properly so that their client doesn’t get off on a technicality.

Just a note: Eric Garner wasn't selling cigarettes, there was no allegation by police that they saw him selling cigarettes that day, witnesses reported that he wasn't... It was fairly well researched and reported by Matt Taibi in "I Can't Breathe: A Killing on Bay Street."
Police were sent out by a lieutenant who had seen him on the sidewalk looking disheveled on his drive into the precinct several hours earlier.
