I do not believe there is one “correct” accent or manner of pronunciation and I fully encourage EFL/ESL learners to expose themselves to as many varieties of English around the world to become accustomed to the beautiful variations of this world language. I focus mostly on teaching “Modern RP” (I may just say “RP” in my older videos, but to clarify, I do specifically mean “Modern RP”), however, you will hear a lovely little Yorkshire twang to my accent from time to time too. It's very interesting to learn more about the english educational system. And it's always a pleasure to listen to you. You say that you speak at a normal speed but you are so easy to understand. I think I am used to your accent by now. The educational system is different in France. You have the little classes from 3 to 6, then the primary school from 6 to 11. Then what we call "college" from 11 to 14. At the end of the college you have a little exam with 3 subjects : History, Maths and French but you don't need to pass this exam to continue your study. Then you have the high school from 15 to 18. You have to choose the subjects you have to study. At 18 you graduate from high school. Then you can go to university.

    Hello Emma, thank you for your sharing, now I'm understand the education system of the UK. In my country that is totally different. We have a required kindergarten from the age of three. And then we have to go to the primary school at the age of six. This is an eight-year-long study minimum. Then you have the chance to go to a high school when you are 14. This is four years long, and you can choose advanced level subjects, but we have to learn the basic knowledge of everything (maths and other sciences, literature, history etc.) Then when you are at the age of 18 you have to do the graduate diploma. And then you can go to university or college, or you can learn a profession. A professional training is two years long, a college is four years long, and a university is five. After the university diploma, you can choose "master" and then after a few years you can become a doctor, and then you are at the age of 27-28 years old. This is the system in Hungary, but nowadays it changes a bit. The fact is that the Hungarian people are smart I think, we have a lot of engineers and scientists all around the world. This system is good, but nowadays the requirements are much lower than in the past. My English is not the best I'm sorry for that, but I have to reach the band 6 on the IELTS, and I hope I will. Thank you, and have a nice day to you, Linda from Hungary

    Great activity, Emma. I really like how natural and authentic this listening practice is :) So often, students only get to listen to entirely scripted monologues, which are not really that useful for listening at higher levels. I appreciate this exercise for the inclusion of natural hestitations, false starts and so on. Fabulous work!

    • @Pronunciationwithemma
      @Pronunciationwithemma  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly! It drives me mad too when students say "I don't understand natives" and "they speak too fast". I always have to say "no, that's normal! What you listen to in classes is fake and scripted". We NEED more with these false starts, slang terms which slip out, and slips. I hate that we're "protecting" students in some way by not expositing them to something more authentic... so this is where I come in! :)

    Hello! I from Russia and we have a such system education:
    Children are in kindergarten from 2 to 6 y.o. And from 4 begins preparation for school.
    A school starts from 7, usually three years in primary school and next step is secondary school (5 years). After secondary school children can go to college or continue his studies at school (two years).
    In college usually 3 or 4 years.
    And next step is university : 2-3 years for people, for those who went to college and 5 years for those who have completed full school.
    For doctors an additional 2 years :)

    I only had question 12 wrong, lol. The education system in Mexico is similar, except playground is mandatory and we don't have GCSE exams. By the way, what does GCSE stand for? Basically, college is like an extension of secondary school but in the last year, you choose a specific area in which you'are going to learn the basic skills related to the career you will choose in University.

    • @Pronunciationwithemma
      @Pronunciationwithemma  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds really interesting, Daniel. It's quite similar to the UK, surprisingly! GCSE stands for General Certificate in Secondary Education.

    I have stopped to listen to English videos for a few days and definetely I drop my skills at listening. I had 5 questions wrong. But I think it a little fast for me. Anyway, I will carry on practising and let's going to see what happen. It can be I didn't watch it with subtitles, but I could understand 60%. Thus, I need to improve my listening. The affective filter, mentioning the theory you sent me another day, is very interesting. Reducing the filter and the monitoring and allowing to expose myself to native speakers conversations certainly will be a good help. At last, congratulations for your videos!! I really have to update them, as you are doing a live every single day. So, let's begin!

    • @Pronunciationwithemma
      @Pronunciationwithemma  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're very welcome! :) And you're right about the affective filter - the more stressed you are about learning English, the harder it becomes. Just start to have fun with the language, play around with it, and don't stress about being perfect. This is exactly how a child would be! :)

      I think it was because many of the teachers I had weren’t very inspiring or motivating. Many of them clearly hated their job and this rubbed off on the kids (including me). Hi Emma thanks for sharing this incredible video. I have learnt a lot about education system in England . Well I already knew some basic informations but you just got me to some details. Anyway I am tending to take The CAE exam in Georgia. My exam date is within a month. I reckon listening is really important when it comes to Cambridge ESOL exams. My problem is usually the listening parts seem so different from everyday English! I got all your questions correct now but in CAE practice is like ten times harder than this . Do you have any recommendations ?

    • @Pronunciationwithemma
      @Pronunciationwithemma  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with the Cambridge exams is that they’re full of traps!! I need to include more traps in my videos in future - I think this will help you! My biggest tip for the listening part of the exam is to read the transcript after doing the questions to find out why you were wrong. Find out why you were wrong and then you can avoid doing that in the future. For example, if you’re always falling for traps, then you need to be more careful of these in future listing tasks :)

    In regards to education, I have many criticisms to Brazilian education, because there are not vocational trainings at schools. The student has to choose your career without training.
    Firstly, at the age of three years old the little children go to school for learning about colors, numbers, letters and basic stuffs. At the age of 5 or 6 years they already are able to know how to read.
    After that, there is the primary school during 8 years. After that, they go to secondary school, at the age of 14 years old - the called medium school. At the last of it, the young students have to be prepared for the entrance exam, then they begin the university only with 17 or 18. But if they aren't approved, they have to continue studying for the entrance exam until be approved. So, the responsibility for the career is always from the student, because there aren't vocational training as you spoke and mentioned as "college".
    The University is from four to six years depending on the course chosen by the student. The University here is quite theorist and with a little practicing, so many times the student don't purchase the necessary skills for the profession. So many students don't get to study in University, because the exams are difficulty and the basic schools don't prepare them properly. And the private Universities are expensive. So, I totally agree with a technical education, espoused for technology, practicing, and focused on labor market.
    My country, Brazil, is suffering a lot with unemployment. This is caused by the decrease of technical education. There are Sociology, History, Philosophy and others theoretical subjects that disturb the Brazilian education. We have to be more practical and teach for the labor market. These are some problems that I, as a math teacher, would like to share with you.
    Thanks,
    Cheers!

    • @aquarius4953
      @aquarius4953 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ivanildo Vieira well some say that we have this problem here in France where technical education is seen as a kind of failure by a lot of people, especially amount parents who don't accept to see their children not going to University. In fact for some even University is bad and the only way to have success and a real good job is to go to what we call here in France 'Grandes Écoles' such as ENA, Centrale, HEC, Polytechnique etc. So where the elites go.

    How much does English literature help in speaking English for non native speaker ?
    I'm from India.
    I think English literature has classical words and phrases which are less used in spoken English at present.
    Please express your thoughts.
    And you told that you had dropped English literature after first year.

    Hello sister! I'm from Cambodia. I'd like to share about my country's educational system. 5-6 year-old children have to be sent to primary school. After finishing 6th grade in primary, they all continue to study in secondary school or high school (secondary school and high school are in one high school). All students have to finish from 7th -12th grade with one big national exam. If students pass, they coul get to study bachelor degree in university. If students fail, they could have chance to study associate degree or they study 12th grade once again. Students can determine for master degree after their bachelor degree finished. I am recently a second student at a private local university. I am having a part-time job as a part-time teacher. My workplace requires me to take TOEFL test for capacity capacity. I have set up a goal to pass it and plan to succeed. I will do listening practice 30mns every day. Thank you a lot for video. I really appreciate what you have done. 👌👍

    Just 8 out of 13 questions.... So sad
    Children in Malaysia begin their education as early as at the age of four at pre-schools although this is not compulsory. Primary education starts when the child reaches the age of six and it's compulsory and the children sit common examination UPSR as thier qualification to the secondary school. . At the end of this secondary education, students sit for the public common examination, SPM as thier qualification to pursue higher education. School leavers with SPM qualifications can opt to obtain a pre-university qualification (such as the sixth form, matriculation programmes and GCE 'A' levels) or study for a certificate or diploma at higher educational institutions. .thats all😊

      Fantastic job! It's tricky and I speak at a normal and completely unscripted pace, so it isn't easy :)
