  • About a year ago I did my first Panama Canal transit! This is a video repost from then - and it was all smooth sailing thanks to the brilliant Pilots and Crew that run the canal.
Special shout out to Captain Ryan for the amazing timelapse footage from the mast deck!

Hi I went through the Panama Canal in 1971 on a P&O cruise ship called the Oronsay and we used to tell the passengers to keep their bread to feed the Donkeys. That was the nickname for the engines that pull us through. Thanks for bringing some great memories. Glad I found your channel. Tony

So surprised to see the mules. I had assumed they helped our Panamax ship only because we had a foot clearance on either side. I guess everyone gets the mules! Awesome video. I could do that cruise over and over it’s so fascinating

This reminds a bit of my time on an aircraft carrier. Everyone on the flight deck was involved in a dance to allow pilots to take off and land. Pilots on the sea as well everyone else help navigate ships through the canal safely. To me it looks like a carefully choreographed dance.
