Hi I went through the Panama Canal in 1971 on a P&O cruise ship called the Oronsay and we used to tell the passengers to keep their bread to feed the Donkeys. That was the nickname for the engines that pull us through. Thanks for bringing some great memories. Glad I found your channel. Tony

Been through the canal several times and this is still fun to watch. The engines on the side of the canals are called mules and in pre google days it was often the case that new crew were asked to keep some carrots to feed the ‘mules’.

Well done - I think you captured that really well. I went through there as a line handler for Mothership Adrift sailing channel (?50ft yacht) in April this year (2022) and it was a wonderful experience - though for us it took 2 days and I had a lovely night sleeping on deck under the moonlight on the central lake. All the best for your continuing adventures and please keep making the great videos :)

This reminds a bit of my time on an aircraft carrier. Everyone on the flight deck was involved in a dance to allow pilots to take off and land. Pilots on the sea as well everyone else help navigate ships through the canal safely. To me it looks like a carefully choreographed dance.

So surprised to see the mules. I had assumed they helped our Panamax ship only because we had a foot clearance on either side. I guess everyone gets the mules! Awesome video. I could do that cruise over and over it’s so fascinating

Goodness. I have watched a few videos about the Panama Canal, but I have never seen it from the ship's point of view. The million dollar locomotives were new to me, and I now have a mind picture of the winch jamming as the water level drops, and the 5000 ton ship pulls said locomotive into the canal. That could ruin someone's day.

The engineer (at 7:27) has it backwards (or at least wasn't clear). because the canal is backwards because there's a bend in peninsula where the canal is located - moving from the Atlantic to the Pacific one actually moves eastward, so the locks on the Pacific side are the more Easterly locks..
