That's quite a woeful decline, isn't it, mate? Not a good sign at all for US cycling - or at least, for US track cycling...I must confess that I'm not at all up-to-date re: US road cycling over the past few years, although I can't imagine that the highly-publicised doping exploits of the likes of such high-profile US cyclists as Pharmstrong, Floyd Landis or Tyler Hamilton (as well as Livingstone et al.) has been too helpful for US road cycling, at the very least? Cheers & best wishes from sunny 'Down Under', campionissimo...Matt. PS. I love your username, btw..obviously, my username betrays my favourite cyclist, who's also my favourite athlete (& one of my favourite people, actually) of all-time!!
WTF is the deal with the description above, in which is states that USA won the gold medal & we Aussies the silver, "westnyacktwins"?!?! We ALL know that you guys are often the kings of 'revisionist history' - whether it be re: wars, general politics, celebrity culture, sport, etc - but this example is simply beyond ridiculous!! I was only 10 y/o when I watched this race live on TV from my home in Melbourne but I KNOW what I saw that wonderful morning (AU time), dammit!! Anyway, all the very best from 'Down Under', my friend...Matt.
Bike tech sure has come a long way since 1984, what the USA team were riding then was considered cutting edge at the time, now it looks so old hat. Cow horn bars (no aero bars), steel frames, single disc rear wheel, pedals with clips and straps... Good aero suits and helmets though.
These guys are slow compared to today. The Americans, who got the silver, got a time of 4:29:85, but the world record now is 3:48, and the girls go 4:10. I wonder how much of the improvement is from the rider and how much from the bike. I heard an interview from a US Postal Service team mate of Lance Armstrong say 20 minutes in th-cam.com/video/3YPBx3lU4GU/w-d-xo.html how they could barely break 4:30 in the 90s when he was a track racer, and was talking like it was mainly because the riders today are faster, talking about training and available resources. So if you believe it is mainly the riders, but are generous and give a third of the time improvement to the bikes, then that means on modern bikes these guys from 1984 would improve a third of the 42 second difference, which is 14 seconds, so on modern bikes they would clock 4:16, which is still 6 seconds slower than the girls. Does that mean modern girls are better than the guys from back then and would beat the best guys from 1984 in a criterium if they all had the same bikes? That's what it looks like, if not, I wonder what the difference would be. If the best men from the 80s are better than the girls of today, it couldn't be by much. I wonder what people think about this. The women probably think it's because the girls are better. I saw there was a race where the girl in a solo breakaway caught the guys and they made her stop and the news woman was interviewing her and was impressed she was faster than the men, but she said she wasn't faster, the men were just racing slow, but the news woman said "No it's because you are faster" at 1:16 here th-cam.com/video/jVFDGmqlTtg/w-d-xo.html
@@WalrusRiderEntertainment better aero tech, better training, better training and monitoring, better technique too (Dan Bigham has brought some cool stuff in), and certainly don't overlook indoor velodromes and not riding on concrete... And drugs - not sure so much, although the 3 of the 4 in the US pursuit team were identified as having blood doped (in defense, it wasn't illegal at the time, and the great Lasse Viren was alleged to have blood doped for his Olympic wins)
A fantastic ride from the Aussies! Led all the way and had plenty in reserve to pull further ahead in the finish.
Gold: Australia
Silver: United States
Bronze: West Germany

RIP Dean Woods
Tragically sad. Vale Dean Woods 😢 a true gentleman off the bike and an absolute BEAST on the bike. Too young......
@@copternutFPV Some tragic days for Australian sport, both Shane Warne and Dean Woods die within a few days of each other. Shane was 52, Dean was 55.
not a mechanical problem.... he pulled his foot out of the pedal strap
