  • As we wait for some extra metal to come in to start the hardtail, I decided to make use of some scrap wood I had laying around to create a homemade bike lift...It's far from perfect but gets the job done on a budget!
Chopper Build Series episode 2 coming soon!

I've seen a few videos same build but using square tubing either welding or drilling a ton of holes. This seems much simpler of a build and plenty sturdy. Great video.

Excellent job! I’m looking at making a similar bike lift table using a bike Jack much the same as what you started with too. Being a metal worker I often forget that wood can be used for other things aside from firewood or building houses….🤪

If you wanted to gain a few inches in height you could use a 2X6 all the way up to a 2X12 for your top rail. Keep in mind, the higher you go, the more you'll be apt to need to build a ramp to get the bike on the work table. Using larger rails would also allow you to use longer screws for your table top. Longer screws will keep from backing out as easily due to wood movement and vibration from use. If you intend on using this as a bike lift table permanently, apply construction adhesive (liquid nails) on the contact surface of the ribs and rails before attaching the table top. That way, if the screws back out, the table top won't lift off the rib supports and rails, plus the added strength is always better. If you use 2X8's up to 2X12's they will come in either Southern Yellow Pine or Douglas Fir. Both of these older growth pine woods are almost as strong as oak. When you get your wood home you're gonna want to let it acclimate to the space it will be used in. I recommend waiting about a week or two before building the lift table. That way you don't end up with a twisted mess after all your hard work. Dimensional wood will continue to dry and shrink for up to a year per inch of thickness. You're going to want to periodically tighten up the nuts, bolts and screws as it dries out. Also, try to use zinc-plated nuts, washers, bolts and screws to prevent rusting in humid areas. If your lift is going to be in a non-climate controlled environment, I recommend using an "oil based" indoor paint to protect the wood. You don't want to use exterior paint or it will stink up the place for weeks and months. Apply the indoor oil based paint in layers until it stops absorbing into the wood. On the lift table top, if possible, use an oil based "primer" and layer until it no longer absorbs into the plywood. Being that the lift table top will be a high wear area, I also recommend applying a few top coats of Rust-Oleum "indoor" oil based protective enamel. Once the enamel cures it will be tough as nails. The enamel will also allow adhesive backed traction tape to adhere far better to the surface and much less likely to lift and curl. If the enamel isn't in the budget, be sure to paint over the primer with a few layers of the top coat you used on the rest of the lift. This lift would be a fun build and worth its weight in gold.....Cheers! "If women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy." -Red Green

I see you only have 1 bolt on the bottom frame at the jack end. Does it not act as a pivot and raise the back wheels when you pump it up when you have a load on the bench?
I made one with angle irons and had to modify it by adding additional bolts (not shown in this video) th-cam.com/video/F7wBvZUe64Y/w-d-xo.html
I also had to reverse the far end (ramp end) so I could get the platform to sit lower. There were quite a few adjustments and changes as I went along.
