My respect for Menuhin as a violinist knows no bounds but I find his explanations overcomplicate matters to a daunting extent. I felt the same about 40 years ago when I read his book. It tied me in knots for a while - working from the outside in instead of vice versa. It took Kato Havas (whom Menuhin greatly admired!) to untangle me. Mit Vorsicht zu genießen!

Thanks so much for sharing all those series of lesson. Honnestly I've tried to take some lessons but the two teachers I had never explained so well compared to him. So I've abandonned lessons to follow my own lessons using several sources and this one is one of the best. As french and not fully english fluent all what he said and teach is even clearer versus what I've got as what they called "lesson". I'm sure that there are very good teachers but in big town not in rural place like where I'm leaving. Good violin to all. Cheers

Hello, I'm Brazilian and I do not speak English. This text was done in the google translator. I have a request to make. youtube has a caption that you can correct the English generated automatically, this legend ends up having some errors and when I put the caption to see this sequence of videos of Menuhim has many items that I do not understand. I do not know if you know how to do this correction it is done like this:
    1- Enter the study of creation;
    2- click on edit video:
3- click on subtitles / CC
    4- click in automatic English;
    5- Click edit.
Wow, I know it gives a lot of work, but if you correct the automatic caption this way, these Menuhim classes will be easily translated into any language, not just Portuguese, but in all languages, and we who do not know English will have access to those menu concepts that are so important.
    thank you,
    Marcello.

Wow ... day three, and still trying to hold a stick. I can position my fingers, but the vertical movement is poor, slapping just completely detaches my pinky... Well since this is not my main instrument I plan on simply not playing a single note again until this technique is developed correctly or at least acceptably :P
I can say that I have been rewinding, and find that usually a correction allows me to progress (for example my fingers now slide correctly retaining shape and can more or less do some vertical movement) Also each day I start at the beginning and usually spot something I overlooked. Also I think I'll have to get a mirror for tomorrows stick playing.
Anyone else find this challenging? If so, how are you approaching it?
PS Thank you so much for this incredible tutorial. Hard to believe one can simply enter a classroom with a legendary player, at any time and ask him to repeat the lesson as many times as it takes. You have uploaded a true gem, really appreciate it.

Well it has taken a rather long time, but I was able to isolate my problem.
I found the base of my thumb to have reduced mobility due to an old injury. I had completely dismissed this as I play classical and electrical guitar, keyboards and bass all of which make heavy use of it. But when I performed the movements with my other hand I noticed this limitation. My fix has been to slowly rehabilitate it by a gentle push with the other hand and focusing on making this movement possible (IO unlocking it)
Consider inspecting the mobility of every joint in your hand if you have any problems. This is a very controlled movement and you may be unaware of these issues that can make this all but impossible if not dealt with.

The pinky falling is a good indicator that your hand at least is not that tense. A good way to notice which parts need to "follow" the stick is to practice the exercise which someone else is moving the wooden stick and your hand on a relaxed way move with the stick but keeps all the contact points on place.
Then with the bow, when you become better at it you will notice that "bouncing" of the fingers that also wants to make a circle.
Also remember that relation between 1 and 4 finger(when he talk about not punting pinky to much on top of the bow). Losing contact on your first finger will make the pinky to drop off the bow.

@Judingo: maybe it's a strenght problem, if so, it will come of it's own. For now keep the nail very very short, and bend the finger to touch and push on the inside, not the top. You could put a few layers of medical tape to help you with the grip, just make sure to take them off when you no longer need them.

Bow hold appears to be a real issue. Some Beginners cannot progress well because they are told how to hold the way like this or like that ! The Bow measurements are constant, but fingers are shorter, longer, thinner/slim, fatter and all these affect the wrist. I think each one must find out the right particular way to hold the Bow, making sure the Bow would not fly away from the fingers. I hold the Bow my own way and began to improve in play ability ! I am still a Learner and trying hard !

I JUST unlocked the wrist flexibility achievement. It took a decade of regular playing. As for no tension in hand that too took like a decade.

Stick. , principle of position of finger ....... matter of balance and pressure
1:41 distance between finger approximately equal, no tension anywhere at all
3:18 this is the actions it should be able to do
3:21 this is the action it will do
    3:30 the second finger
    3:54 the first finger
    4:18 weight of the arm
    4:44 the fourth finger
    5:17 the third finger
    (5:31)another function. up bow
    (5:40) action against thumb
    * 5:57 two arcs
    (6:06) the other one. Bridge ~ 1 vs 3 4 finger
(6:21) this bridge spread the Weight of arm transfer to first finger then retranfer back to 3 4 finger
    6:40
    7:12
    7:25 basic principle of
    * 7:48 the angle of knuckles always 45-degree
7:59 first to reason of this angle
.... keeping the thumb always in the right And angle to the stick
    8:38 second reason
    9:14 third reason
    10:01
10:22 flexibility is required in Many ways....... ,pushing, pulling, lifting ....... in circle
10:34 in circle take as ...... one string to another, one bow to another, connect top half bow to bottom half bow
10:51 to test softness & flexibility
11:17 when you are Short of flexibility
11:37 combine two direction in a circle
12:53 flexibility test, fingers remain in the same place
    13:31 vertical test
    14:18 strength
14:38 first require ~momentum. puls. intermediation paaaive
14:52 second require~ prolong continual effort
15:06 first is for a change of Direction
    Smack bonce(15:34 )
    17:22 making circle
17:53 second aspect of strength is involved in continues pull push bow
    in the down bow (18:17)
    In the up bow (18:33)
    18:58 put 2 (prolong)& 1 (smack bonds) together
19:54 return to no effort state, state of floating sound
All we have to do is Balance the bow
And carry the weight in the shoulder
    20:26 continues never ending one
