  • A fearsome bunch has assembled at the Aikikai Honbu Dojo complex in Shinjuku’s Wakamatsucho for asageiko (morning practice). Led by dojo master Mitsuteru Ueshiba, their pursuit is aikido, a Japanese martial art loosely translated as ‘the way of the harmonious spirit’...

Disapointing to see the airconditioners. When i visited it was still natural air and natural temperature. Kisshomaru wrote in his book Spirit of Aikido about the benefits of training without airconditioners.
Another step of abandoning the budo spirit, and making it all a jolly pleasant excercise.

"There are no matches in Aikido. That's because our founder believed that the true spirit of martial arts is not about testing one's strength against others, but to pursue mental improvement and inner strength. Two people pair up to practice moves together strengthening their bodies and minds. That is what Aikido is all about."

@@-sisjsksn For mainstream aikido, no matches in terms of competitions and sport fighting. There's no contest as it can be in, say, sport judo, kendo, or MMA. It's simply not a part of the goals or practice. This seems to trigger a lot of MMA people. They seem to see it as an affront. That is not to say that there isn't randori. That's different from contest or sport fighting.

That's why legendary Samurais stick to the principle of One shot, One kill. Same with a real street combat it must last only in seconds..beyond that you'll get stabbed or killed.

A health system DERIVED from a martial art once known as aiki jujutsu. There is nothing wrong with that as long as people are not deluded into thinking its effective in a real self-defence situation where violent people will resist you at all costs... I believe that Professor Ueshiba was a martial artist in the true sense of the word and the martial artists that were with him before the war, with possibly the exception of the Iwama style of Hitohiro Saito aikido after the war, really did know the martial art of aikido, but Aikido in the true sense of a martial art died with Professor Ueshiba... All those Ueshiba's after him and all those who follow the present Ueshiba Aikikai are at most generally are doing it as a health system with maybe a few odd exceptions....

Osensei took on challenges, so he could back up his peaceful talk. The essence of the art, aiki, has not been taught in modern aikido. Instead aiki has been relegated to some afterthought, like something you might get after years of training.
Aikikai, since the passing of Osensei, has been teaching jujitsu with peaceful slogans. What morehei ueshiba learned from Takeda, few at Aikikai know how to create.
Even on a health basis, modern aikido is more like cardio for fitness reasons. Internal work (which stimulates the fascia, organs and its self healing properties) is ignored, so the main health benefit is missing from training. Dumbed down aikido in the modern world is a disgrace to the potential of such a majestic art.

Actually, they are basically jujitsu stuff (but done with the spirit of harmony, since it's aikido) and the probability of success depends on the practitioner.
More important, Aikikai has been playing the long con for so long. What morehei ueshiba learnt from Takeda has not been passed down, and lost in modern aikido. Aikikai is basically teaching jujitsu with peaceful slogans.
Aiki was the end product for Osensei. For the Aikikai, it's an afterthought.
If you want to feel what a technique powered by aiki feels like, go check out Dan harden or Roy Goldberg.

@@ccdev the probability of success depends on the practice, not the practitioner. ALL boxers are effective, 95% of aikidoka would lose to an old woman swinging a purse around violently if they stuck to pure aikido, it's the art, not the artists.

Just great, the real spirit. Aikido changes people in a clean way. And please You BBJ and Gracie JJ guys, even you would not stand, sorry lay, if fighting would become real like on the street, eye stabbing, pull ears, biting in the neck, groin squeezing etc... And I also wonder why your style, not art for sure, in every fight against a powerful man it is not working if not setup, yeah gracie hup hup

    • @hoop6988

Gerard seriously not working if not set up. Just look at early UFC the Gracie family took on people 4 weight levels above them and still won. Also in a real fight BJJ would be even more dangerous moves such as joint dislocations and neck snapping wouldn’t be prohibited.

If you can't defend yourselves doing a "martial" art then how is your art a martial art ?

martial art is a translation, a name given in the occidental world. Aikido is Budo, so its objective trascends a mere fight. Aikido is a search for the Self and the Unity through a martial way, so all the good you may became as a martial technician is just a secondary effect, and many can master it too. Through that you look for the Self. If you want to crush bones or kick people you should practice other ways. Problem with Aikido is that people does not understand its true nature, so they just match it to a simple fighting art. Cheers!

      > Martial art is a traditional form of fighting skill widely practiced as a sport in Asia.
      Example: Wushu, aikido, etc
      1. Aikido has fighting movements like a counterattack, footwork, dodge, and lock.
      2. Widely practiced as sport.
      3. Aikido's real purpose is for peaceful meaning.
      > Martial art definition is also a fighting skill for self-defense. Examples: Taekwondo, Karate, Judo, etc.
      > Martial art in the occidental world means a method of fighting or defending. Examples: boxing, wrestling, krav maga, etc.

I'm tired of always reading the same bullshit about aikido! Aikido does not aim to do street fighting, for that made of MMA, jujitsu,! On the other hand, if you want to improve your techniques, you will see that practicing Aikido can improve you. Rigor, body construction, stability, flexibility, balance. Learn to absorb the attack, not to be open, to anchor yourself and improve your stability, etc....
