- Chapter 1.1 The Heel Peel
This exercise forces your body to fire the muscles of the abdominal cylinder as a unit, actively recreating exactly what happens in the body when we use correct breath support in singing or wind-instrument playing.
No need to use silly metaphors, gimmicks, or descriptions- you can FEEL for yourself what correct breath engagement is! So if you've been searching for real, applicable exercises that show your body what correct breath support feels like- THIS IS IT!
If you've been struggling with understanding breath support and/or using correct breath support in your singing or playing, or you simply want to build more strength in those muscles- this is the perfect starter exercise!

thankyou so muchhh, i found it easier!!
Fantastic exercise!
Yay! So glad you liked it!
Jessica, suggestion - could you list what is included in the subscription at the link (add to website)? I've found your content very helpful but I don't want to pay $350 without knowing what I'm getting.
Hi James! Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention! Of course!
The Breath Support Summit is a On-Demand Course with 11 chapters of material including 2 anatomy lectures, suggested vocalizes, and numerous body and core exercises designed to healthy FORCE the body into correct breath support. Phil and I designed this course to be fool-proof meaning there’s no way to do it wrong! This, I believe, is SO important for singers who have heard terrible metaphors and vague descriptions about what breath support should be and are still rather confused. For $350 you get access FOREVER to the entire program. Each chapter is designed just like the video above- with step-by-step instruction and demonstration followed by suggested vocalises to pair with the exercise for maximum comprehension and heightened skill level.
My and Phil’s goal is that you can walk away from this course with complete clarity of understanding of: correct breath support anatomy and physics, what correct breath support feels like in the body, how to create/execute/engage breath support correctly every time, and how to strengthen the various muscles of breath support (which also will give you amazing abs just as a bonus!)
Thanks again for the feedback, I genuinely love the suggestions. Let me know if you have further questions!
I tried to hum whilst my feet were up and I was literally unable to produce a noise. Could this be because my abdominal wall was over-contracted? It was rock hard all the war around.
1. Could be that your abdominals are not used to such high intensity! Start with hums while the feet and legs are high in the air (which is lower intensity) instead of the 1 inch off the floor height. 2. Make sure you are inhaling, expanding, and maintaining ribs expansion on inhale WHILE the abs engage 3. Try talking first, then work your way up to tone. 4. This exercise is mostly for just FEELING what breath support correctly so that you can recreate that same feeling while sitting standing etc. I would not say its the best for, ex vocal warm ups etc, while in this position, so use it sparingly :) Hope that helps!
maybe you’re holding on your neck in order to keep your muscles engaged, make sure the neck and throat are relaxed completely and try again
I don't see how it's possible to maintain the volume of your stomach cylinder when humming (exhaling), unless your intercostals are coming down. Otherwise wheres the pressure coming to exhale? Also, my understanding is that the rectus abdominus should only be engaged at end of long phrase and to use the lower abs and obliques to start. Sounds like you want everything firing all the time. Goes against most of what I read.
