Maruki deserved everything he got for ruining the love between Joker and Ryuji. During my first playthrough of the third semester, I couldn't help but notice the similarities between Yaldabaoth's story arc and Maruki's, both want to use the general public's cognition to fix some flaw in humanity. Yaldabaoth believing humanity could not stand up to fate and change it and Maruki believing that making people live a false life was better than learning to adapt to whatever life throws their way (ironic for a counsellor).
