I was just given a beautiful dulcimer and had no idea what to do with it--there are no teachers in my area and precious few books on the subject--so your videos are just what I needed! Thanks for being such a great teacher!

I'm left handed but don't bother with a left handed dulcimer. I'm playing it backwards and it's quite fun... once I've got it down I think it will give me a unique style.

That it does Lisa. Some kit dulcimers are quite nice looking and nice sounding instruments. If I had more time in my life, I would try my hand at making a kit dulcimer to say I made one:-)

Hi James, the dulcimer I'm using is just an old 1980's one made from a kit by someone- it was unused for many years and then given to me. It's quite slender and shallow, but sounds kind of pretty.

Hi Cheryl, you don't really need to have a string 'off to the side of the dulcimer'. You can have either three strings, or have 4 strings - with two of them being the close-spaced pair of melody strings that you use your noter on. In other words, the melody string can either be single or double. If double, you treat it as though it was one string.

I recently bought a dulcimer from ebay 15 mintues ago - I won the auction, yay! :D
Your video is helping me a lot on how I should strum. I can't wait to try the bump-diddy; and the shave-and-a hair-cut-two-bits strum. :D

I have a 6 string dulcimer. How would you suggest it be turned to? I have it tuned top 4 strings to A and bottom 2 strings to D. Is this correct or should the 2 middle strings be turned to something else? I would appreciate any information you can give me. Thank you!

+Sandra Clifton - Sandra, I would suggest joining Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer ( fotmd.com ) and then joining our "^ String Dulcimers" GROUP....especially for helping provide information for 6 string owners! :) fotmd.com/strumelia/group/35/6-string-dulcimers
