  • In this episode. John from 'To the Garage' shows you a quick check to establish if your Jaguar xK8 XKR or XJR was ever fitted with Jaguars adaptive damper system (CATS). Some were replaced with standard dampers following MOT fails when owners could not afford to replace these relatively sophisticated dampers.

    Hello John,
    I've just bought another xk8, 1999 coupe, silver, black leather, had lots of money spent on her and she has CATS.
    She's has a total respray, new headliner, new cills, full service history, new shockers, timing tensioners, etc etc 90k miles.
    I've just bought her for £750! She'd hit a tree, i was going to use her for parts but I've decided to rebuild her! Obviously I've blamed you and Damien when I told the wife.
    Great video thanks again, Jon

    Good stuff again!! Love the 220 and 180. About 15 years ago Jaguar sent one of their race-setup 220s around to several dealers in the states. What a beautiful car. Much larger than people envision with pictures alone. Certainly fills up an entire traffic lane. Only seen one in the wild.

      The 220 is huge drop dead gorgeous, and makes most supercars look like go-karts

    There is of course also the control module in the boot. And when it comes to beautiful cars, I believe the XJ13 deserves a mention :)

    hi john, just had exhaust done over rear axlle and replaced air filter with the k/n filter, what a difference, better p/u and mileage up from 16/17mpg to 22 on short trips.mamy thanks to your great articles. Tony from Nz

      Hi Tony. Great to hear. I think the Flattened original over axle pipe is the biggest power thief on the standard car.
      Thanks for watching my friend👍

    When I got my car, the caps were missing. I replaced them with caps from a car at a salvage yard. IF a previous owner had made this same replacement years ago, with caps that had the cutout, I might erroneously come to the conclusion that CATS had been removed from my car. It seems that the existence of the cables and/or the CATS control module(I assume there is one on CATS equipped cars) would be a better indicator.
    Keep them coming, I enjoy every one of them!

    There doesn’t seem to be much information on this out there. Thanks for this!
    The XJR I’m looking at has a cable coming out of the black cap and I had heard something about active suspension and compared images of what’s under my bonnet vs other XJRs and was adamant there was something going on…

      Hi Chris.

    Hi John, my MY97 does not have CATS, just regular spring and struts. Just weird how the issue is only isolate to the front headlights.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ref your headlights.
      I think the clue has to lie with the sequence of events. If the Steering column electrical adjustment failed at the same time or just prior to the headlights not operating then that's our best clue.
      I don't have electric steering column adjustment and am away from home at the moment so can't stare at my car in case.
      However, am I right in saying that the column used to lift away when the ignition was turned off? and return when it is turned on.
      Also, I am not certain but I don't think you can have the headlights on without the ignition being in at least position 1 (I could be wrong on that, please correct me, anyone).
      If So then a bad loom connector to the ignition switch or a bad ignition switch itself could be the culprit.
      Anyone got an electrically adjustable column car that can confirm connection to ignition state?

    Hello John. My 2001 XKR is equipted with cats. If I were to convert to no cats, do I simply unplug and cap-off the leads? Will it effect my suspention modulater in the boot?

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can fit conventional dampers to a cats car. Many have already been converted like this as the price of CATS dampers is considerably more than standard ones.
      I don't have CATS anyway so am not the expert but as I understand it if you don't connect the wires to the tops of the v=dampers then your only issue is a fault displayed on your dashboard. To eliminate this I believe you have to disconnect the CATS module in the boot.
      Get some advice from others who have experience of this first though. One of our other subscribers may pick on this thread and advise you further.

      My car has the cables for CATS in the engine bay - but I have no CATS. Were all cables/wiring fitted to all models and then the shocks spec’d ?

    You should drive one with cats at low speed. You may find a softer ride.

      It’s a really good set up it should always be left on instead of bodging normal shockers on as it defeats the point of having the upgraded set up
