They are an incredibly easy band to like. Their songs are short and catchy and distinct, completely lacking in pretentiousness. Just straight forward great bangers, one after the other played by good looking guys who dress cool. If I had to come up with some bands who were great but hard to get into at first the Strokes would be about as far away from making that list as possible. What part of their sound, or image do you think turns people off at first?

I started listening to them because a girl I liked in middle school had “The Strokes” written on her backpack in sharpie, so naturally I had to research and discover this awesome band. She never was interested in me but I was hooked with this band. Introduced them to my girlfriends there on after. So many memories, good and bad, with their music. I’m about to be 24 but those memories never fade when I put on one of their records.

    LYRICS
    Was an honest man
    Asked me for the phone
    Tried to take control
Oh, I don't see it that way
I don't see it that way
    We shared some ideas
    All obsessed with fame
    Says we're all the same
Oh, I don't see it that way
I don't see it that way
    Raised in Carolina
    I'm not like that
    Tryin' to remind her
    When we go back
I missed the last bus, I'll take the next train
I'll try but you see, it's hard to explain
I say the right thing, but act the wrong way
I like it right here, but I cannot stay
I watch the TV, forget what I'm told
Well, I am too young, and they are too old
The joke is on you, this place is a zoo
    You're right it's true
    He says he can't decide
I shake my head to say
    Everything's just great
    Oh, I just can't remember
    I just can't remember
    Raised in Carolina
She says, "I'm not like that"
    Tryin' to remind her
    When we go back
I say the right thing, but act the wrong way
I like it right here, but I cannot stay
I watch the TV, forget what I'm told
Well, I am too young, and they are too old
Oh man, can't you see I'm nervous? So please
Pretend to be nice, so I can be mean
I missed the last bus, we'll take the next train
I'll try but you see, it's hard to explain

Everytime I watch it I go through my memories, being a child and discovering things, the first girl that I fell in love with, my first kiss... My grandparents that are gone now, some people from my family that were important, the day that I almost lost my mom in the hospital, the day that my father almost left the house when I was 13 and I cried in front of him... my first serious relationship and all the mistakes that I committed and that eventually led to the end of it, and how much I still remember her.
Even for a 3:50 minutes long music, it feels like an eternity when you listen to it over and over again, extremely nostalgic song.

Something about The Strokes on those first two albums... they were just one of those bands where their sound is like a total gestalt experience. This song is so meaningful to not only me, but mankind itself. It explains how we wake up everyday, work, invent new things, travel, explore, fight, have peace, and have a lover in our lives. The drums tell the beginning, the bass comes in and tells more, and then the guitars come in and lastly the singer tells the morale of the song. It may seem to be a little love song to people, but if you listen very closely, and you look at the pictures that go along, it is also showing Human accomplishments, culture, thrills, laughter, and things that we Humans can feel. And what is really amazing, is that we are the only known creatures to have feelings on not only this planet, but the explored universe so far. It is all really..........Hard To Explain.

Logan SJ Those words I said come from a lot of experience of the song, this song is purposely trying to bring back nostalgia to old timers who lived in the 70's, 80's and 90's. I am only 14 3/4, but the reason why I love this song is not just the images or words, but the meaning of the song, as I stated before, it also lists out Human accomplishments and discoveries within the Human accomplishments. I know, this is coming from a kid on a computer who seems like a Sci-Fi nerd, but I am actually an Average Joe explaining the reasoning behind this very song, which is why...it is...Hard To Explain.

I'm 53 and I don't think I've ever heard of them before. I was in a bad motorcycle accident 4 yrs so I'm not really sure.

In case if anyone was wondering, at 1:45 that's a Pioneer RT-909 (with the Pioneer logo covered up), the left reel is for Maxell 35-180 tape (there are several variations that use that reel, also has the Maxell logo covered up by the M) and the right reel is the Pioneer PR-101 pickup reel which I believe comes with the player, and the large reel adapters are Pioneer PP-220A. I don't know anything about either players on the side or the equalizer on top

this song, and this video, have a strange effect on me. in my struggles with depression, I connected with this song. I don't know why. watching this video makes me feel like everything will be okay, things will get better, that I'm happy to just be alive. hang in there, boys.
    it's hard to explain.

I used to be a fool. When I was 16, I used to see their videos on MTV on a daily basis because they were it, they were new, they were cool, but I didn't like them back then. I saw Last Nite was on and I changed the channel immediately. Two years later, my taste in music changed completely and the first CD I bought was Is This It. I listened to it every single day. My taste in music changed, I stopped being a fool. Thank you, The Strokes.

It's hard to believe this came out 13 years ago. Good music is ageless and timeless.
