    Every team in the league could use a guy who throws UFOs like that. When you're only in for 1-2 innings, having a delivery or pitch selection that batters can't anticipate is all it takes to keep a losing team down. A knucklebaaler, a submariner, or just someone with crazy movement on a standard sliders. Beautiful pitching.

    Love the submarine style pitching. Dan Quisenberry was the master. RIP

    The best part is that this guy will probably never have any serious arm trouble. He could probably go out there and throw 9 innings everytime and hardly ever get hurt.

      Yes underrated point. Pitchers intentionally destroying their arms these days 😩

    • @bufordhighwater9872
      @bufordhighwater9872 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just because his pitches are slower and he pitches sidearm doesn't mean he's any less likely to be injured. He's not a knuckleballer. He's still flinging a ball at his top speeds. Those speeds might be significantly lower than other pitchers' speeds, but he's just as likely to over-exert or damage something in his arm as any other pitcher throwing at their top average speeds.

    • @misterknightowlandco
      @misterknightowlandco ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bufordhighwater9872 I was under the assumption that wasn’t the top speed he could throw and this is was his “gimmick” so to speak.

      One of my better friends used to play AA up through AAA, & was a submarine pitcher. He also had 2 elbow surgeries before he reached his mid-20s. You're still putting crazy angular motion & torque on your joints when throwing from the side/underneath, & a lot of stress on your elbow in particular.
      Whether it's worse than those forcing the highest possible velos out of their body is debatable, but it's definitely not a low-risk motion.

    a hitter swings his bat from its standing stance point to a hitting point in the shortest distance, which is why many people recommend a down-swing. but the down-swing is originally for hitting a ball from an over-handed pitcher because the hitter believes the ball will travel horizontally off the mound. sometimes curveball "lob"s. but the rising slider overwhelms many hitters because the path of the ball is directed upward.

  • @bmac4

    And he's been probably the Giants' most consistently effective reliever lol
    One of the best 7th/8th inning guys in the MLB. And it's really cool that he and his twin brother often go back to back.

      dont forget, hes in the same pen as Camilo Doval

    • @bmac4
      @bmac4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Temptazerit's somewhat of a tossup, purely on runs allowed Rogers has had a better year, but that's partly because Doval had one game he got lit up in. It's why I said "probably", those two make a great 1-2 punch (or I guess 8-9 punch technically), one guy who wins via trickery and the other just by heat. Rogers 2021 could have been even better because he tended to do worse when tasked with the closer role but was nigh unbeatable in the setup slot.
      Doval has definitely taken a step forward this year for sure too. He's a bit newer and he's really coming into his own this year.

      I'm chuckling a little anticipating Tyler coming in right on the heels of a Jordan Hicks start. Imagine Hicks going 5-6 innings, giving the opposing hitters a steady diet of 101/102 for the first couple times through the order. Then bring in Tyler Rogers and watch them all spiral themselves into the dirt trying to adjust to 73!🤣🤣

  • @evanp042

  • @HDWpowopo
    @HDWpowopo ปีที่แล้ว +9

    The dichotomy of him and Doval is absolutely absurd. Basically a 30mph difference between Rodgers Slider and Dovals cutter. Absolutely devastating change of speed. Rodgers has a 214 ERA+ this year (WTFFF) and Doval is at 160 ERA+ with 25 saves.

    I pitch submarine at a high school level. It’s fun and all, but you gotta be a fundamentally sound fielder as a pitcher as well. The whole idea of this approach is to force ground balls. And a lot of the time, it’s weak choppers that the pitcher has to grab because the bat will often just clip the top of a ball thrown from a foot above the ground. Lots of flips, lots of ground balls, but also lots of making opposing batters look like absolute idiots with what they swing at. It’s awesome. I love pitching submarine. Every time I step on the mound to take my warmup pitches the entire opposing dugout just sounds confused. And then they look confused during their at-bats. It’s so fun.

      He's made some really fantastic plays! Several times now I've seen him field a comebacker with a runner at 1st, and throw the ball to 2nd for an easy double play

  • @Wolfeson28
    @Wolfeson28 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    0:51 This rising action is uniquely effective against current MLB hitters because of how they're generally taught to swing. Nearly all MLB hitters today have some degree of uppercut to their swing, so the barrel of their bat is moving upward as well as forward when it passes through the hitting zone. Part of this is to attain optimal launch angles, but it's also because that upward bat movement better matches the downward trajectory of pitches as they pass the plate, so there's more potential for the path of the bat to intercept that of the ball and make contact - an idea that goes back at least as far as Ted Williams. So, Tyler Rogers' slider works directly against that tendency, since its rise minimizes the overlap its trajectory has with most hitters' bats. This different angle between bat and ball trajectories is also a big reason why, even when hitters do manage to make contact, it's usually such weak contact.

    • @peterparker642
      @peterparker642 ปีที่แล้ว +1
