Mercedes Benz W31 - Typ G4 (1934-1939) [Mercedes Off-Road]

From 1937 a more powerful engine was built to enhance the performance of the G4, the engine was built with 5252 ccs and 85 kW. Many of this breed were owned by top party members and were featured in rear-facing spotlights to serve as temporal blind to unlicensed drivers who followed too close. The G4 was majorly used by Adolf Hitler and his staff parades marking Austria and the Sudetenland.

They were never really meant for off-road use, rather to carry radio equipment. That didn't stop people from taking them off-road. I have seen a photo of one stuck badly in a ditch and Hitler is standing there with mud all over his uniform. They were too heavy for off-road and weren't 6 wheel drive.

The three that turned up for sale in the usa were fake replicas...only one genuine example has appeared for commercial sale,the ex hogans heroes tv series car was offered at auction and was bought by kevin wheatcroft and it now resides in his collection in the uk..apparently the only other bidder was mercedes benz....and he outbid them..

The engines must have been roughly the same from the luxury sports cabriolets 500 K and 540 K production 1934 to 1936 and 1937 to 1939, there was also a 5.8 liter version in the 540 produced only a handful. These engines had without use of the Supercharger, 100 bhp and 115 bhp, which is 74 kw or 85 kw.
As the G4 was not driven faster than 50 to 60 kmh, 32 to 38 miles per hour there was no sense to use a short time Roots Supercharger which was only allowed to be switched on for maximum a minute to make an overtake at higher speeds..
