    My cat was just diagnosed with kidney failure. She had an IV the last 2 days. And sent her home with subcutaneous fluid I’m very nervous but I’ll do what I have to do to help her. She was tested again prior to leaving the vets office and they said all of her values look better but it’s hard to tell what her outcome will be

    I told the internal medicine vet about your video on chronic kidney disease. Your video came up
    right when Eddie, who has been successfully treated for Polycythemia vera for three years got
    a creatinine of 220. Last year he was 171. So as per your information and also the vet here he is
    getting 100 ml lactated Ringer's subcutaneously every morning. Will be following up later in July.
    Not my first kidney disease rodeo. Good thing I can order from the medical supplier because
    vets charge an exorbitant amount for the equipment and supplies required. The ones in Toronto
    at least. Eddie is probably 16 years old but I don't know for sure since he was an adult when I
    brought him home.
    My cats get full blood work and dental every year. Except Eddie has more checks
    because of his bone marrow disorder. I hate surprises.

  • @Hasna256

    Thank you for giving your opinion on raw food. I think many people get the idea that they should aim to give raw food because of videos by Jackson Galaxy and I wasn't sure what to think of this. I missed this! I would have asked the following question.
    I understand that SDMA is an early indicator. However, in the last blood test, our cat was diagnosed with Kidney insufficiency despite having SDMA within good range (0.52 µmol/L, max is 0.75), but with Kreatinin above limit (201 µmol/l, max range 168 µmol(l). Is there a simple explanation to this, or did I misunderstand that SDMA is an early indicator? Obviously, I understand that you can't diagnose our cat remotely, I'm just wondering if there would seem to be an inconsistency in the diagnosis we received. Many thanks!

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a very unusual result. I'd retest at least once and see if it looks more sensible before starting to think about exotic Dx. Also, important to look at what the urine is doing. If dilute, renal insufficiency is probable.

    • @roghroogar9204
      @roghroogar9204 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@HelpfulVancouverVet Thanks a lot for your answer. We'll enquire our vet and see if we can take a urine sample. I got fed up and brought him to a clinic where he was thoroughly examined and treated. I will never go to the prevous vet again... Lesson learned, a vet has to be well equipped to treat animals properly (and the clinic is not even morr expensive.. ).

    My Quigley is 19 years old and we've been managing his kidney disease for 7 years. I do believe that feeding him raw using Food Fur Life has made a huge difference in his life (quality and quantity). I live in Italy and searched specifically for a veterinarian who is classically trained (University of Siena) but who also has supplemented her training by incorporating other modalities, and who would support me and guide me re: raw feeding. I'm enjoying your videos a lot, but your views on nutrition could use some widening with less than total dependence on what the industrial pet food industry peddles to all vet schools (it is this way in Italy just as much as in the USA/Canada). I respect your view and know that it comes from the heart--but think this is an area, perhaps like the use of calcitriol (which you use in spite of it not being widely used in the wider field of veterinary practice), that you might find has great utility when used appropriately. BTW: I'm going to see what my vet knows about/thinks about calcitriol. Thank you for including that in your video. All the best.

    Please advise, my vet has informed me that when it’s time for my cat to be put to sleep she will most likely have to sedate her then euthanize via the heart because it was hard for her to put an IV? My cat is barely eating, drinking, and has extreme weight loss due to kidney failure. She was put on IV for 2 days then sent home with sub q bag for me to administer 100cc per day. She’s been home for 5 days and her mouth hurts trying to eat. I’m devastated. She’s 10 years and has had a difficult life prior to my adoption 8 years ago.

    Good Day Dr. URI. Love your videos and your cats. My cat has early kidney disease but is a fussy eater. Is it OK to add spring water from canned tuna to her food? You mentioned protein powder in another video as one way to get a fussy cat to eat. Should this be avoided for a cat with kidney disease?

      I have the same problem with my cat.. I think tuna might not be very good because it contains salt and preservatives. Proteins maybe also not a good idea when you are trying to cut on protein intake. It's such a mess... I end up buying tons of food that he won't eat. Every now and then i find a solution and after a while he will stop eating that food...

    Too late for you to answer I’m sure but what do you do for a cat with kidney disease that is not that interested in any of the kidney foods? She loves the juice out of one of the Royal Canin k/d foods. It would be nice if one of the companies would create a formulation of the liquid/gravy to add to the soft food to encourage cats to eat more of the solid chunks. Just a thought! Love your videos.

      Ii have the same problem. So far my cat's renal values have been borderline but yesterday the test gave 3.1 (normal value is up to 2.2) and this is pretty bad, I think... Because he doesn't like relnal food I have been feeding him on "senior" food but I don't know of it's a good solution. What do you do? Do you ever give the liquid of other food that he loves (for my cat it's Gourmet) to make his food interesting? Recently he has sptarted hating even the senior food so, rtaher than starve him, I give him what he likes. Is it going to make renal values even worse or is it going to impact only on symptoms? So far he's never had serious symptoms, apart from lost appetite and a little weight loss...

    Hi Dr. Uri,
    My sweet Kitty has suffered from numerous dental problem since she was 5 months old and has had several teeth extracted. Last year, at the age of 7, she was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease. We have been managing it with medication and the Hills KD diet and she is doing pretty well. Unfortunately she has several teeth that are in bad shape and are bothering her (she won't let me touch her mouth so brushing doesn't really work). My vet says the teeth need to come out but he won't perform surgery on her because of the risk of anesthesia with CKD. I feel stuck because I don't want her to be in pain but I also worry about the risks of putting her under in her current condition. Do you have any advice? Thanks so much.

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Given that patients that go under anesthetic get IV fluids, and kidney patients benefit from IV fluids AND sound oral health I can never understand why some vets hesitate to do rentals on them. Just find a vet who is confident in their anesthesiology and get those teeth out! I should make a vid on this..

Vet is hesitant to do surgery to remove teeth and infected areas because of the risk of kidney issues getting worse or risking death. Similarly to Lixeh i feel so conflicted on what to do cause eating is clearly uncomfortable and painful for her :(

    Hi doctor,
    I am so grateful for your channel.
    My very special cat of 14 years, Jasmine was diagnosed with kidney disease a year and a half ago. We’ve managed with subcutaneous fluids, Cerenia, antacid and most recently a potassium supplement. My question is… she was recently diagnosed with a small heart murmur and I am now giving her 100 ml sub fluids every day.
    When she is feeling really bad, which is rare but does happen on a rare occasion, should she get intravenous fluids as well as sub q?
    And if so, am I running a higher risk of heart failure because of too many fluids? Recently, she has lost 2 pounds of her weight and is down to 8 lbs.
    Thank you so much for the answer
    Raquel from Los Angeles

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I absolutely support putting CRI cats on intravenous fluids (IVF) for 2-3 days any time they hit a wall or what I call a 'uremic crisis' in my videos. It makes a world of difference! I usually have them on IVF until they are eating or 3 days, whichever comes first and send them home.
      With proper monitoring, heart failure should not happen when cat is on IVF. Much more likely to occur with SC fluids at home. To monitor measure the resting respiratory rate (breath per minute when cat is fully asleep, not purring). If its is 45 it probably is.
      Might want to get the thyroid checked if you haven't already. A lot of CRI cats also have thyroid disease which causes murmurs, but they are typically not clinically significant i.e. do not cause heart failure.
      Just a note: I don't use antacids in CRI cats. There is evidence that gastric ulceration is not a common complication of CRI in cats, so I figure why give them as owners have enough to do!

    I have a cat that is almost 80% Norwegian Forest cat. It took me a wee while to become his friend. I have finally got him to a Veteran for his first set of shots. They also told me that he has to have some teeth removed. What can I do to keep this from happening to my other cats. I have 5 emotional therapy cats. I love them all very much! Help me if you can!

    Hello doctor, your videos are extremely helpful, thank you very much for the time and effort you put into making and publishing them.
    My 2 year old male cat recently got his bloodwork done after he was trying to urinate too frequently one night. His creatinine has been consistently at 2.1 (mg/dL) he has been given fluids via IV for three weeks and now we are alternating between 2 days IV and the rest sub q at home. all his other markers (BUN, Urea, Urine analysis) are fine. I am very worried and just writing to you for some reassurance for he is a very young cat and I want to be around him always.

    My cat developed kidney disease probably half way through her life. I had difficulty knowing just what to feed her. I know fish has alot of Phosphorus, so tried to stay away from that in spite of her desire for it. She was allergic to corn and grains resulting in knawing an scratching herself until she was raw. I read every label on the canned cat food. I Tried to keep her only on chicken as she would not eat beef, lamb, or rabbit. A very difficult situation to get her to eat especially if she got sick of chicken. She has passed, however, for future adoptions, what in the world would you have done in this situation??

      I feed Maggie cat whatever she will eat. If she stops eating then I will say a sad goodbye. Having her eat anything is great by me. Kidney cat Maggie is my heart. It’s very difficult right now. 😢

    Hello!! Sorry I missed this, thanks for all the info! I have a question that applies to kidney disease as well as many other illnesses: I have a young healthy cat who I love very much. I worry because she is incredibly skittish and extremely averse to being handled in any way she does not want. The only way I can get medication into her is by hiding it in her food (in small doses; she is also not very food-motivated) - I did try your tutorial and I barely got any medication in her mouth and then she hid from me for over a day! This isn’t a problem now but I am wondering about administering treatment, like subcutaneous fluids, when she develops diseases of old age. Do cats mellow out with age in this regard? Or is there any way I can get her more comfortable over time with being held still? I know she is somewhat malleable because she’s adapted to things like being picked up briefly (for purposes of an after-work cuddle) but only because I put her down the second she wants.

    When I first met Gypsy I thought he was a girl. He has a fang tooth that is broken halfway off. The vet I took him to says that he was a few loose teeth and that is why he has to have them removed. How can I tell how old he is?

    I have another cat named tinker bell. She meows when she goes to the litter box, but I don't know what she is having a problem with. So I don't know if she is having a problem with her kidneys or poo issue, so how do I tell. My other cats also use the same litter box. Help Please!

      I have one cat who meows if she can't find a box that hasn't been used that day. However, I suggest that you take your cat to the vet. They may have a medical problem. My one cat meows regularly because her arthritis causes her pain when she holds the position to poop. The last time I took her to the vet it turned out that she also had a urinary tract infection. She meows less now that the infection is gone and her pain medication for arthritis has been adjusted.

    Are there supplements that can help with CKD? I read that milk thistle, tripsy, omega-3 and turmeric can help with the kidney values however my vet is not able to advise me.

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet

      None of that helps, it's all BS. Just focus on diet, hydration and meds specific to the patient's stage.
