How to Pair HC-05 Bluetooth Modules

  • A fast explanation on how to pair two HC-05 bluetooth modules!
    !!!!!!!PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE PAIRING YOUR BOARDS !!!!!!!
    COMMON ISSUES:
    Issue 1: This method works ONLY with an Arduino UNO. (edit: One user claims it works with an Arduino Mega as well but I have not tested myself. Could be an option if you have a Mega). Once the boards are paired you can use whatever you want, but for programming in AT Command mode you MUST use an UNO.
    Issue 2: Some boards require the button to only be held during power up (as seen in video). Some boards require the button to pressed at power up AND when hitting "enter" on AT commands. Some boards require the button to be held at ALL TIMES in AT mode.
    Issue 3: ERROR: (7) when trying to use the AT+BIND command. Your address be entered in this exact format XXXX,XX,XXXXXX 4 characters (comma) 2 characters (comma) 6 characters. If the address given by the slave module is not in this format, you must add zeros at the beginning of the section to make up for it. i.e. If the address given by your slave is 13:EF:C76A you would enter that as 0013,EF,00C76A. If the number of characters is correct an you're still getting the error; check that you do not accidentally have a space at the end of your string (very common).
    Issue 4: The Baud Rate for AT Command Mode is 38400. The default Baud Rate for communication between modules is 9600. This can be changed with the command AT + BAUD
    If you are still having trouble, post in the comments. I also offer pre-paired boards from my store: www.patrickstefanski.com/store

    If this process isn't working for you, please read the video description. I've updated it with a few of the most common problems. If that doesn't help, search through the comments, i try to respond to every question. If that doesn't work, post your new issue in the comments and I will get to it. If that doesn't work, I sell pre-paired boards in my store. Link in the description!

    I have a question. What about the passwords that we configured? I applied exactly the same procedure but master could not connect to slave just because I have changed 1234 default password to something else. When I reconfigured the slave's password to be 1234 master could connect to it? If pasword matters (which seems so) how can we let the master know or bypass the password of the slave?

    Hi I do not know if you are still answering questions, but I am able to follow your steps to a tee except when I switch to the other bluetooth module. When I do, I am unable to get a response from the serial monitor. No matter how many times I type "AT", nothing seems to come out. Is this a problem with my own bluetooth module, or is there something I missed in the video?

    • @PatchBOTS
      @PatchBOTS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Troubleshooting:
      1. Are you using an Arduino UNO? You must use an UNO to program.
      2. Is the light doing the slow, long blinks representing AT COmmand Mode?
      3. Is there a blank sketch uploaded to the arduino?
      4. Is your serial monitor set to 38400 baud?
      If the answer to all these questions is yes then you may have a busted module, try another module with the same method to confirm.

  • @robGamings08
    @robGamings08 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey so I followed your video, (great job by the way!), and they are blinking twice every 2 seconds like they are paired, but it’s back and forth and not synchronized. Is it still paired? I couldn’t find anything wrong with what I did.

    • @PatchBOTS
      @PatchBOTS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Akram, This tutorial just shows how to set up communication between the two modules. So this tutorial would get you started. Yes, you can absolutely use these two bluetooth modules in your sonar project. You'd can send the data from your sensor to your servo over bluetooth or your remote to your servo, whatever you need. The bluetooth is just replacing i2c or other serial connections with a wireless solution. HOWEVER, you'd need to seek out another tutorial for that, this one is just about establishing the connection between the modules.

    • @PatchBOTS
      @PatchBOTS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh okay let me explain a little better. Tx is your "transmitter" and Rx is your "receiver". When you're programming the modules through AT you want the transmitters connected to each other and the receivers connected to each other. After everything is programmed and you have your master and slave, you need to switch around one pair of those wires such that the Transmitter of your Arduino is connected to the Receiver of your Bluetooth Module and vice versa. This way one receives what the other transmits.

    Can you make a video on how to control a servo motor with this configuration? I'm trying to do that however I keep running into issues.

    Best video on this subject I've seen so far! Great job! I'm assuming you're using a 3.3V arduino (since you're not running the arduino's TX pin through a logic level converter or resistor voltage divider)? You might want to specify this in the video. I'm pretty sure that the HC-05 can only handle 3.3V on its TX and RX pins and that 5V would fry it. Or maybe I've heard wrong and the HC-05 can handle 5V just fine?

    • @PatchBOTS
      @PatchBOTS  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah I think they can handle it. Haven't had any problems yet.

    • @jeffl7124
      @jeffl7124 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just fried my HC-05 board by connecting my arduino's TX pin to the HC-05's RX pin (without first going through a logic level converter). So it's definitely possible to fry it (as I feared). Not sure how you're getting away with 5V.

    • @PatchBOTS
      @PatchBOTS  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah man, doing some research it says you should use a voltage divider on the RX pin to get it down to 3.3v. But I have 2 sets of HC-05's in my BB-8 driod, and I use one set for testing things all the time and have never had a issue with frying them. Really strange.

    • @jeffl7124
      @jeffl7124 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries. It was cheap. The back or your modules look a bit different than mine. It seems that not all HC-05s are created equal. There's probably varying base boards and manufacturers out there. Anyway, it would be awesome if you added a quick note about this in your video so no one else has to go through this.

    • @PatchBOTS
      @PatchBOTS  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, maybe a brand issue. I'll put a notation in there later today and make a section in the description of the video.

    I succeeded in making the HC-05 blink slowly, but there was no response when I opened the serial monitor and entered AT twice (I entered the command within a second). serial monitor set to 38400 baud,
    I used an Uno R3

    Hi, I'm using an Arduino nano instead of an UNO. I've managed to get the bluetooth module to get in to the AT mode, which I can tell from the blinking of the LED. However when I go to the serial monitor and I type AT nothing happens. I've got the baud rate and everything set according to your tutorial. Do you think it is because I'm using an Arduino nano instead of and UNO??

    • @PatchBOTS
      @PatchBOTS  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had issues with the Nano trying to use the RX/TX ports and the USB port at the same time. I'm not sure if you can set them up on a Nano. Once they are set up you can reattach them to a Nano, but you may have to start with the UNO.

      @swishy _ fishy In the end you can use a Nano for your project, but it appears you need to use an Uno to do the AT mode commands. Others have had the same issue using a nano which was resolved by switching to the Uno.

    For the Arduino Nano - I needed to drop the voltage to 3.3v on the RX Pin by connecting a 1k and 2k resistor. (search google for connecting HC-05 to Arduino Nano)

    I know others have probably asked but I cant seem to get a response at all from the AT command. I get the show blinking to happen but when I type AT on to command line I get nothing in return. Im on an Arduino Uno, made sure to set baud to 38400, and TX -> TX + RX -> RX. Not sure what could be wrong, any help would be appreciated.

    Hi, I need to put a transmitter on the collar of my dog, so when he barks it would trigger a device in the house. I also need to keep track of the barks on an app on my phone that I will later make. What technology do you recommend? How? Thank you so much.

    • @PatchBOTS
      @PatchBOTS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hm. I think all this is possible the only real tricky part is to figure out how you're going to power it on the dog side. Maybe attach a battery to his collar? If it was me, I would use all 3.3v components and use a single 18650 to power it.
      For the collar I would use a small microcroller like a ATtiny16 (check out TinyCore16). Some kind of sound module that can detect large bursts in sound and one of these HC-05 modules. Then on the other side just have some kind of app running that can collect each instance of a "1" coming in from the collar
