Locking crankshaft/flywheel in 1.6 petrol TU5JP4 engines when changing timing belt (Peugeot/Citroen)

  • How to pin/lock the crankshaft/flywheel when changing the timing belt in NFU or TU5JP4 1.6L 16v 110bhp petrol Peugeot/Citroen engines.
    The car is a Peugeot 307 (2007; 1.6L 16v petrol; 110bhp; ~47,000miles; TU5JP4 engine). This should be the same in Citroen with the same 1.6 petrol engines. Make sure that you have put the pins in the camshaft sprockets and the line at the bottom of the crankshaft is pointing down. Then you can wiggle the crankshaft tool to lock the crankshaft/flywheel. If it does not go smooth enough you can rotate the crankshaft (with camshaft sprockets locked) a tiny amount clockwise or counterclockwise, only a small amount so the tool can go in the flywheel. Do not turn too much counterclockwise.
    The genuine tool is 6mm, but I had to file it to ~5.7-5.8mm. The hole gets rusty and the 6mm rod does not fit quite well. The length of the rod that goes inside of the hole is ~2.8cm.
    The camshaft sprockets are 8mm, so one can use a drill for that purpose. Also, there is a U-shaped clamp to hold the new timing belt on the crankshaft, but it does not really work. I use cardboard that I stuck underneath the crankshaft to hold the belt in pace, much easier.
    Here are a few very good videos of how to change the timing belt:
    • Peugeot / Citroen 1.6 ...
    The next two are in Russian, but they are really good to watch of how to replace it, even if one does not understand the language:

    Thanks MM for that info straight to the point , can you pin the 1.6 hdi flywheel/crank from same area, I have both models the petrol and diesel

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, good question. I have not done it on my 1.6HDi, so difficult to give you a proper answer. I think the flywheel locking in the 1.6HDi is only to release the pulley bolt and not used for timing. The 1.6 petrol is used for timing.

    Anyone know if flywheel is the same in all Tu5jp4 engines? I changed the engine in my 206 1st gen for one that was in a 307.
    After that change the engine lost power and sometimes at low speed there is no torque or became confused.
    I read in a forum someone changed the engine in a Xsara to one from a 307 as well and only after changed flywheel the problems were solved.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not too sure if my video will do it. Have a look at the videos listed in the description. One is in Russian, but pretty good. The other one is German, but with English subtitles. As long as the 3 match, there shoud not be a problem, i.e. the two camshaft and the crankshaft one.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you line up all the holes plus the bottom one, it should be timed. Do not go counterclockwise only clockwise.

    I bought a timing belt (Bosch brand) for my Peugeot 206 sedan 1.6 two cam shafts.
    The belt has 134 teeth!
    I just want to make sure if it's the right one to my car?
    I intend to make the replacement my self.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is fairly straightforward to change the belt + water pump and associated pulleys. I should have made a video, but thought not. I cannot quite remember if mine was 134 teeth. I bought this: www.autodoc.co.uk/gates/7024338
      It was GATES KP15581XS belt + water pump and pulleys. The belt is Gates 5581XS with 134 teeth.

      Yes, I'll definitely change the water pump + pulleys.
      One more question please. 🙏
      The belt I bought has no marks (I mean the three white marks) for the crank and cam shafts.
      Should I buy another one with those white marks, or may I count the number of teeth between the marks then make them my self??

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FIXnMIX.. The marks are extremely useful, but you do not need the marks, counting the teeth is also alright. If I were you I would get more reputable belt with white marks.

      It's Bosch brand - made in Germany.
      That's what it says on the belt, plus it has all the (numbers, arrow ➡ direction and date) written on the belt except the marks!

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@orenestorovic1921 Definitely not a chain. The 1.6 petrol and the 1.6HDi are not chains, but timing belts, regardless of the bhp. Check your car booklet and you will see timing belt replacement interval. You would not have it if it had a chain.

    Is this a reliable petrol engine in your opinion?

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  ปีที่แล้ว

      In my opinion, yes. It is pretty solid engine and that is why I bought it myself. It uses a bit more fuel, as it does not really have anything, like a turbo. The engine does not have much stuff in it anyway to go wrong and it does not suffer from headgaskets as compared to the 1.4 engine.

    • @HardiHolpus
      @HardiHolpus ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@moremolecules Thanks! So for C3 1.1 and 1.4 petrol engines are more economical, but less reliable than 1.6 engines.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HardiHolpus Yes, correct. The 1.4 (not too sure about the others) and the 1.3 (Citroen mainly) are economical, but very much prone to headgasket failure, so quite a bit of mixing oil/coolant. Not too difficult to repair, but it comes back again. For this reason there are great bargains to be had in the 1.3-1.4L petrol engines, but one needs to get hands quite a bit dirty.
